Shouldn't it have depth charges?

Fin: I found Wiki has a series on naval armor, decent entries. Best I could think of ATM, but, eh, it's not politics or anything controversial to inspire malicious changes to facts and stuff.

And Norade?
PSS Mythological, Portugal Battleship laid down 1920

Displacement:
47,127 t light; 50,035 t standard; 52,326 t normal; 54,159 t full load
I see two problems here. A) I told you 1922 as a minimal laydown date. I meant it. B) See what I just conveniently bolded for you? You just breached the 50,000T cap for 1925, so if you don't lower it you can lay it down in 1926, not 1922.

And my problem isn't you having 16"/52 caliber guns, but that you haven't displayed any progression at all in your weapons but simply jumped to the most awesome warship you could conceive and then intentionally laid them all early enough that you could have an entire run at game start instead of still building some.

So, in summation. Raise the laying date to 1926 as-is on the design, or cut it a thousand tons or so standard to get 1922 as your laying date.

It should have. But Springsharp refuses to add them in the text, despite me putting them into the ship calculater. I was going for 4 racks with a total of 32 depth charges.

Ah. Another 3b3 error. I wouldn't mind seeing the engine weight slider function myself....

History of Brazilian Battleship Design
Being a brief description of Brazilian battleship development from the first dreadnaught to the latest 1925 designs. I haven't yet found names for the various battleship classes so forgive me if I use the year construction began instead.

Model 1909 Battleship
Displacement: 20 111 Standard Tons
Speed: 21.3 knots
Range: 7000 nm at 10 knots
Weaponry: 10 x 12 inch guns in 5 double turrets
Main Armour Belt: 11 inches
Note: Same gun layout as HMS Dreadnaught

Model 1911 Battleship
Displacement: 23 190 Standard Tons
Speed: 21.8 knots
Range: 7000 nm at 10 knots
Weaponry: 10 x 13.5 inch guns in 5 double turrets
Main Armour Belt: 12 inches
Note: Same gun layout as HMS Dreadnaught.

Model 1913 Battleship
Displacement: 25 710 Standard Tons
Speed: 22.3 knots
Range: 8000 nm at 10 knots
Weaponry: 8 x 15 inch guns in 4 double turrets
Main Armour Belt: 13 inches
Note: First Brazilian battleship with superfiring turrets. Though the number of guns decline from 10 to 8 this was considered acceptable since the number of guns in the broadside remained constant. This was also the battleship that broke the vicious cycle of the Maritime Self-Defence Force constantly having to upgun their designs.

Model 1915 Battleship
Displacement: 29 299 Standard Tons
Speed: 23 knots
Range: 12000 nm at 10 knots, or 7000 at 12 knots
Weaponry: 9 x 15 inch guns in 3 triple turrets
Main Armour Belt: 13 inches
Note: First Brazilian battleship with triple turrets. Also noticeable for its greatly extended range, it was these battleships that helped intervene in the Congolese revolution.

Model 1917 Battleship
Displacement: 34 771 Standard Tons
Speed: 23.7 knots
Range: 7000 nm at 12 knots
Weaponry: 12 x 15 inch guns in 4 triple turrets
Main Armour Belt: 13.5 inches
Note: First Brazilian battleship with four triple turrets. Also the first to use the improved 24.5 inch torpedoes. A greatly enhanced design, but still only barely up to speed with that of other navies.

Model 1919 Battleship
Displacement: 42 781 Standard Tons
Speed: 24.5 knots
Range: 9000 nm at 15 knots
Weaponry: 12 x 16.5 inch guns in 4 triple turrets
Main Armour Belt: 13.5 inches
Note: First Brazilian ship using the All or Nothing armour layout. This design continued the trend of increased range and increased cruising speed.

Model 1921 Battleship
Displacement: 44 162 Standard Tons
Speed: 24.3 knots
Range: 10000 nm at 15 knots
Weaponry: 12 x 16.5 inch guns in 4 triple turrets
Main Armour Belt: 13.5 inches
Note: Slightly larger and heavier version of the Model 1919s.

Model 1923 Battleship
Displacement: 45 533 Standard Tons
Speed: 24.2 knots
Range: 10000 nm at 15 knots
Weaponry: 12 x 16.5 inch guns in 4 triple turrets

A decision must be made in the life of every nation at the very moment when the grasp of the enemy is at its throat. Then, it seems that the only way to survive is to use the means of the enemy, to rest survival upon what is expedient, to look the other way. Well, the answer to that is 'survival as what'? A country isn't a rock. It's not an extension of one's self. It's what it stands for. It's what it stands for when standing for something is the most difficult! - Chief Judge Haywood

I've posted Springsharps of several of them but it seems that each time I do so there's a dozen unrelated posts and my design gets relegated to the sidelines.

Even though it is a tad older than 1925, would the Fubuki-class destroyer be acceptable?

No, you may not have it in service. You may begin preparations to lay them however.

Re: SDN World 3 Ship Design Thread

Post by Thanas »

Well, my battleship design heritage is pretty much straightforward.

up to 1917: as in OTL
After Battles of Lissa and Genua (details being worked out with Raesene), new design priorities.

1918:
1 L20alpha class battleship. 41500 tons standard.
Due to the cost of the war in Austria, Germany then scales back battleship construction.
1917-1921: rebuilding of old ships with oil firing boilers and some other changes (to be revealed when SDNWiki page goes online).

1922:
Bayern class rebuilt complete, Germany produces updated Bayern class [url=http://bbs.stardestroyer.net/viewtopic. ... 5#p3189815]. Class has 8x16inch, a step back from the previous L20alpha design.
2x 30kt Ersatz Yorck cruising version, 2x30kt Ersatz Yorck high speed version (all posted previous in this thread)

1923:
Germany adds another 8000tons to the L20alpha design, builts following ship:
Einheit Klasse, Germany Schlachtschiff laid down 1923

Displacement:
47.400 t light; 49.932 t standard; 51.668 t normal; 53.056 t full load

Thanas wrote:And a 1.6kt German Destroyer.

You can built viable destroyer designs in Springsharp.
27 knots is a little slow for a DD of this era, and 1922 is too early for enclosed, powered mountings on DDs; to my knowledge, every destroyer in service in 1925 would use open deck mountings (that may or may not have shields) without hoists. Even when we start using them, the type used on DDs would be "deck and hoist" rather than "turret on barbette". Also, I'm not sure what you did wrong with the depth charges, but I got them to appear on my design. An important note however is that Springsharp 3b3 does not actually add the weight of torpedoes and DCs to the ship even though the weights are listed in the "weapons" page and the report, so you'll have to add them in the misc weights to maintain realism. Also note that for destroyers you can bring the composite strength well below 1.0, all the way to 0.5 in fact, provided your displacement is low enough. Note how my composite strength is at 0.54 yet there is no stress warning. I suggest however than we not allow SS designs that have cross-sectional strength ratings of less than 0.5.

The revised version of my earlier design: Note the depth charges.

Transom sterns and bulbous bows...not sure if they were invented yet. Your deck armor is also seriously weak. Other than that, the ship is about on par with my own cruiser design, though it is a worse seaboat, has less speed and less cruising speed.

Transoms were first used in the early 20s. Unfortunately, introduction was delayed because the Brits used it on a minelayer.... so the transom stern had the unfortunate habit of pulling in mines dropped from aft.

TBH, I was intending my 1922-1923 Battlecruiser design to have a transom stern. But it'd be a new, revolutionary feature.

Some real life cruisers in the 1930s only have 2.5" deck armor.

Also, I wanted my cruisers to be able to steam all the way to Java one way or another. So some compromise had to be achieved. I have 10,000nm range for them.

I'm still tweaking them and doing some changes. Maybe 3" deck armor.

Hmmm. As the first units would have been launched at the start of the game and would still be fitting out, I don't know.

I might have it launched in 1920 or 1921 instead (*checks* Yeah, that works in Springsharp), so export might have started in 1922 or 1924 in which case you might receive the first ships at the start of the game. PM me how many you would like to have.

You can built viable destroyer designs in Springsharp.
Yes you can. But I thought you had to bring composite strength to well below 1 to do so. Of course your design has a max speed of only 27 knots hence...
