This is the tentative design for my next light cruiser. At 10,000 tons standard she may seem a bit bloated for a six-gun cruiser, but there was no other way to combine a 32-knot speed (the same as the previous class) without using a large transom, a 1.2 seakeeping rating, plus the scale of armor protection I wanted. Even then I had to scratch my head to keep it under 10,000 tons for the sake of the build-time threshold.

It is also about time that Germany makes the switch to Diesel engines for those ships that do not require heavy deck armor. Application will however be confined to ships with slow max speed or light cruisers.

4.5kt along with six 5"+ guns? Yeah that makes it a light cruiser...the only thing it is missing is range and armor. I get the range thing (since where would you really need to go) but I'd look to see if there is a way to slap some armor on the sucker otherwise its really just an under-defended CL.

1400 tons for 1350 tons cargo and 500 troops
Note that it takes advantage of the German proficiency in Diesel engines, which frees up both steam turbines for "real" warships as well as saves time. Plus, with that small of an armor deck, replacing them will not be an issue if need be. (Historically, diesels were not an option on battleships because replacing them was pretty much impossible due to the huge armored deck on top). The Armor scheme mostly saves the ship from bombs and artillery fire from the shores. Probably only calibers of 5" and higher will be a direct threat. It's draft should allow it to operate in the smaller harbors as well as pacific islands.

Note that the Otter class has a better cargo/troop ratio. The idea behind is that the Otter is supposed to either carry attack formations by itself for sustained operations or - if used with the Blauwal - to carry the brigade artillery/command staff. 3 6000t Blauwal and 1 4000t Otter will be enough to carry one brigade.

EDIT: Most of the AA armament is clustered around/on top of the superstructure for better coverage. I am not sure if that was clear from the springsharp layout.

Note: the 18" armor belt of this ship is not 18" armor. Rather, it is a decapping plate followed by a high quality 16" armor plate. See this and this for the ideas behind it. The Italians also incorporated that idea. The Imperator class is the first class to use this feature.

Hmm... I definitely can match my new battleships to the above spec... only if I allow the Block Coefficient to go above 0.65.

That was done on Steve's advice but...

Do you put any beam between bulkheads at all? Or that is Springsharp 2?

As Sea Skimmer said in this very same thread, the block coefficient may go above 0.65. It will make the hull look less slender and give the ship more of a bulky look, but it should not be a technical problem. So I have no problem with it.

An early version of Springsharp 3, I think. I designed all my heavy units before 3b3 came out (I actually have 18 BB designs lying around). However, I cannot really be certain - I have the rtf. report files lying around, but the ship files are on another computer.

EDIT: Just tried to recreate the ship in springsharp 3b3. It works as well. Set as beam between bulkheads 113 feet.

I was told that beam between bulkhead should usually be about 30 feet less than full beam to represent the actual protective bulkheads on a ship.

I'd be curious about that source, but it works as well with those specifications. In any case, I don't really feel like redesigning 18+ BB designs.

That nowhere near gives a total of 30 feet between the bulkheads and the outer hull. The only place where that holds true is central amidships.

That is also where the maximum beam is, which is the point of the exercise.
