Like Dark Hellion said, we need a place for ingame alliances and stuff to be made. So, let's commence with the politicking!

And, also, rules!
  • You Start with 40 Provinces and 25000 points.
  • Each Province Gains you 200 Points Per Turn, one year.
  • You can use your points to either upgrade province defences with 'Fortresses' Costing 2500 * Level Fortress or create units.
  • We're winging it on unit prices, and unit tech level, but a basic spearman/swordsman/zombie costs 40 points per 100.
  • Ships, sea and air, cost as much as the number of units able to hold, for transports, and just a 'reasonable price' for any other ship.
  • Combat is role played, for the sake of simplicity.

EDIT: Renamed for accuracy of thread usage.
EDIT2: Rules added.

Iason Constantine was sailing down to the Despotate of Byzantium to secure the Republic's alliance with them. Why would the very elected Basileus of the Republic go on a mission that any moderate envoy could accomplish, though? The Basileus, however, wanted to make a very good impression on the Despotate, to establish the Brotherhood of Romaioi and make sure that the alliance would be long-lasting, if not eternal.

Iason prepared himself on the State Barge, hoping that the 100 Legionaries as his honor guard would show Hellene kinship, and not an act of hostility. However, the many written contacts between himself and the Despot would hopefully ease anything like that.

Further, the Basileus brought with him many gifts from the north, such as polar bear furs, aurochs horns, and over one hundred pounds of the beautiful rubies originating from the Republic's own volcano.

Yes, hopefully these gifts and shared ancestry would allow for a strong alliance indeed...

Marc and his small group of attached diplomats were roaming the plains north of the Republic, searching for the legendary Sarmatians, thus far in vain. Those strange warrior women had no concept of a house or a castle, so it was hard to search them out and try to make some sort of peace with them. While the Republic did not know for certain if the Sarmatians have ever attacked them, they did not want the Sarmatians to start any time soon.

So, Marc was bringing a pact from the Basileus himself, along with thirty pounds of rubies and some fine horses to hopefully convince the Sarmatians of a non-aggression pact. The pact essentially stated that the Sarmatians were free to do as they wished to the north of the Republic, but that the shall never encroach into the Republic's lands or to use the Black Sea. In return, the Republic would not turn its attentions northward or otherwise cause injury to the Sarmatians, as well as trade with them.

However, Marc first had to find them in order to bring the pact to them...

Baernish-Imperial DMZ

Martin Le Brave looked out of his carriage; there were indeed perks to being a member of the Order of Priests, trying to find the Baernish representative. For years the borderland was a place of simmering tensions between the Empire and the Duchy, thanks to Martin, that would all change.

He spied the Baernish representative with a toke guard, the maximum number of troops aloud by the DMZ Agreement, whom walked up to the Imperial Priest. The Priest immediately got down to business, “Good Sir, The Empire is proposing a agreement of mutual defense against aggressive powers. Also, Lord Patrik would like to discuss allied expansion into Ireland with the Duke, if he is willing.

“While I understand any hesitation on your part stemming from His Majesty’s prior Supreme Commander, I assure you, Lord Patrik is a much more ::pause:: moderate than Lord Xavier.”
This is an empty country and I am it's king, and I should not be allowed to touch anything.

“While I understand any hesitation on your part stemming from His Majesty’s prior Supreme Commander, I assure you, Lord Patrik is a much more ::pause:: moderate than Lord Xavier.”
Lord Astarlan, the Baron Steora, stepped towards the Imperial representative, offering a measured half-bow. He wasn't quite sure where the priest fit into the social hierarchy, and so was careful to avoid giving unintentional offense. A duel between emissaries was never a pleasant omen...

"Your Excellency. It is the wish of my lord the Duke that our two nations continue to build upon the friendly foundation of the DMZ Agreement, and I was indeed instructed to propose such an alliance. I am glad that our thoughts seem to run in parallels on this; such congruence of opinions cannot help but aid in our purpose. I agree to the, pending approval from His Grace Duke James, and will forward by crystal your Irish proposition."

NOTE: "Crystal", in this case, refers to the small diamonds that Baernish Spellcorps members can use to send visual and auditory messages to each other. Yay for videoconferencing!

Meanwhile, in Fortress Baerne...
The sorcerer glanced up from her crystal, brushing a lock of dark hair out of her eyes.
"M'lord Duke, the Lord Astarlan wishes to report that the Imperial envoy met with him this morning, and that the Eternal King had indeed sent an alliance proposal as well. Apparently, they want to invade Ireland together."

"Excellent," said James IV of Baerne, rising from his throne. He strode quickly to the crystal, and spoke towards it. "Lord Astarlan, I commend you for your good service. You may tell the Imperials that we will commit the fleet and ten thousand troops to an invasion of Ireland."

Imperial Chronicles

Iason Constantine was received with full honours and afforded a Triumph through the Great City of Byzantium. With crowds cheering as if a great hero had returned, Iason Constantine was met by the Despot, Flavius Petrus Sabbatius Iustinianus. "Welcome, Iason Constantine to my fair city. Come, we have much to talk." Iason was led into the palace escorted by his legionaries and the Varangian Guard.

The two leaders finally settled down in the balcony facing the Bosphoros and discussed matters of state. "I hear you have a proposal for a military alliance and a free trade treaty, as well as guaranteed passage through the Bosphoros," asked Iustinianus.

"Indeed I have. I trust my envoys have briefed yours fully?" asked Constantine.

"Yes, I have reviewed the proposal. In fact, I also propose that we demarcate our borders as we expand our lands. I propose that I would occupy much of Greece down to Pelopponese, and I would occupy most of Anatolia."

"I would like much of the Trebizond/Pontian Region and some of the Eastern Balkans area, and two-thirds of the Black Sea."

"Fair enough. We plan to eventually push east into Syria. Though I hear there is a power the west and to the south east."

"And I hear there is a power to the north."

"There might be fighting. But I believe our mutual cooperation would be a shield against our enemies."

"Indeed. A toast to our great friendship and alliance."

"A toast indeed."

The eagle cried out from its kingdom high in the sky, as if announcing to everyone it ruled the heavens. Its call was almost royal, dominating and sure, and it echoed above the fod-covered forests beyond the walls of Wawel Castle.

The King gazed upon this sight, the cold morning mist billowing above the city's moat. The morning wind played with the stoat-rimmed cloak that hung around his shoulders.

Since before my grandfather's grandfather was born, this land was ours..., the sound of his father's voice came back to him as he listened to sounds of the waking city.

Remember, my son, that we are one with this place. No enemy can take it from us as long as we stay true to ourselves...

The King's father was dead. Not a day ago, the cloak he now wore covered his father's shoulders as he was carried through the streets to the funeral pyre. Now it passed on to him.

Be proud of who you are. We have a legacy few posess. You must not betray the memories of our ancestors.

The King leaned on the cold hard railing of the tower's balcony. He could still hear the chanting of the druids and wailing of the women.

Enemies will come here, eventually. They will try to seize our land and enslave our people. You will have to meet that challenge and fight them as best as you can.

So many days spent listening to the old man's teachings...so much time toiling over books, and so many scars left on his palms by his teacher's birch twig...and he still didn't feel ready.
The King cried, a single tear rolling down his cheek.

I believe in you, my son. You will be a good King.

He stood there for a while, remembering. As the morning fog recessed, the Pogorian King straightened himself and walked back inside the tower.

King Radosław The Third. It sounded almost funny.

Le Grand Donjons du Paris

«Unacceptable, » the voice came out of the young girl heavily distorted, almost as incomprehensible as the King’s logic, «Completely unacceptable. You will call back that agent, and deny the Baernish one immediately»

This is what His Eternal Majesty is reduced to, thank His Sanity that I’m His Will, thought Supreme Commander Lord Patrik La Fortunate. Lord Patrik snorted and said, “Come now, King, the Duchy is trustworthy, they haven’t broken the DMZ treaty, have they? Oh, and furthermore, You put Me in charge, trust your people, I’ve got this.”

« No trust shall be given to you, nor shall it be given to the Baernish, they come and seek out our destruction »

“Not quite, oh Great Majesty, but again, You put me in charge, so it is no longer your choice, Dead Man.”

The girls face contorted into a facsimile of the reaction the Eternal King’s « I AM YOUR LORD, YOU SHALL HAVE NO OTHER ALLEGIANCES BUT THOSE TO ME »

“Lovely rhetoric, really, but, you have no true power, sire; you are just an object, a focal point for all adulation, fear, respect, and envy. Don’t try to build yourself as anything else, you don’t have the worldly view anymore my liege, I’m sorry. Now, I have a Channel Agreement to sign, goodbye.”

The shell-shocked god was speechless as the dictator left his presence, even the young girl whom the god was using as a messenger was unable to do anything to signal the King’s displeasure.

Á l’extérieur du Grand Donjons du Paris

As Patrik left the large foreboding structure, he noticed a Kappa and a Laguz walking toward the reception courtyard. The Kappa was obviously famed Admiral L’Imperator, the laguz was most likely just a random member of the Imperial Communications Corps, which were assigned to each army, and occasionally to special detachments like Martin Le Brave’s mission to the borderlands. “My Brothers,” called the Supreme Commander to the Admiral and the messenger, “What do you need from His Majesty this day?”

“Ah, Hello, my brother, we were looking for you, His Eyes,” responded L’Imperator, “My brother here was Brother Martin Le Braves ICC representative, and he comes bearing great news.”

“Well, what is it, my brother?” Lord Patrik asked, turning to the laguz.

“My Brother, the Baernish were thinking along the same lines, they wish to form a mutual defensive pact with us,” the laguz paused, “The Duke himself agrees to the Irish Plan.”

“The Duke was there in person,” Lord Patrik said nervously, the Duke being there in person would throw his carefully planned chess game of importance into disarray. Martin Le Brave had been a midlevel priest, a prestigious position, but one that command no real respect from Foreign Officials, unless of course he held rank in any other setting, which Martin Le Brave did not.

“No, my Brother, he did not, the communicated via magic crystals.”

“We need them, to augment the laguz own abilities to cover ground quickly. More importantly, what did he agree to with the Irish Plan?”

“The Duke would put the force of the Baernish Navy, and ten thousand troops to the invasion.”

“Alright, well, go to central, my brother, and send someone out to discuss a trade deal for these, again to augment your own abilities, because it would be to costly to try and phase you laguz out of your non combat role. Also, send someone to rouse the Knights at La Havre, and the 2nd, 3rd, 7th, and 9th armies, those are the ones nearest La Havre, correct?” he looked at L’Imperator.

The Kappa retired admiral thought for a moment, “I believe so, yes.”

“Good,” Lord Partik said, turning to the laguz, “Make it so, dear brother.”

“Yes, brother,” said the laguz walking away.

“Well, Admiral L’Imperator, would you like to command the mission to Ireland?”

“His Majesty No, leave it to the young fellows,” The old admiral responded.

“Your loss, dear brother.”

“Yes, my loss, dear brother.”

Baernish-Imperial DMZ

Lord Astarlan nodded quickly as the Spellcorps captain assigned to his mission finished relaying the message from the Duke. He smiled brightly at Martin Le Brave, who, he had been astonished to learn, held no rank outside the Imperial Priesthood. Not that he minded, per say, but having grown up in the rigid hierarchy of the Sovereign Duchy, he did find it odd. Pushing the thought from his mind, he bent forward and said;

"I've just received m'lord the Duke's response. I quote: "We are delighted to hear of this glorious first step in the process of brining our nations closer together. We are advised by Spellcorps Commander Ragnar that a store of communications crystals large enough to provide for the Empire's troops does not exist, but it would be our pleasure to provide the spells required to make them. Such devices could not help but aid the quickness of your forces to respond to unexpected events, which would no doubt aid your armies, and by extension Ours, in the conquest of Ireland, as well as any other venture we may attempt in the future." Lord Astarlan breathed deeply. "Shortly, His Grace is happy that the Eternal King approves the treaty, and we'll be happy to provide you with the crystal creation pattern, if not the crystals themselves."

Iason had found the Queen of Cities to be marvelous, though he was a little nervous at the response he got. Even mighty Chersonesos at the height of Christmas celebrations paled in comparison to Constantinople's welcome of him.

However, this elation was quickly put to the back of his mind while he engaged with the Despot. While the Republic's ideals were firmly against the idea of despots, and there were large portions of the Republic that weren't even human, the Republic was very much a Hellenic nation, and the power in Constantinople was also Hellenic. While the Crimean Romaioi would disagree with the despotism of the Despotate, they could not deny that it was common in the past. All they could hope for was that the Living Saint would recognize that Jesus and Zeus wished for a Republic, and not a Despotism.

But, that was for another day. Iason now must consummate this alliance, for though the political particulars clash, the common Greek identity must be at the forefront. Like ancient Sparta and Athens before, the Republic and the Despotate must put aside their differences, embrace their tremendous commonalities, and subdue the world as Alexander, son of Zeus, did so long ago before the Fall.

Thus, the Brotherhood of Romaioi would prosper, for it had no other options.

"Great Flavius, it is my honor to accept this pact on behalf of the Republic. I shall return to Chersonesos and tell them of our pact. I hope to return the world to its glories under Alexander or the Romans, or even beyond, with our brotherhood. And, please, if you should ever desire or require to visit Crimea, do not hesitate; while Chersonesos is not as grand as Constantinople, we do have our share of luxury and grandeur."

Martin Le Brave took a sidelong glance at the other laguz in his party, counting the laguz he had sent to the, “Yes, that would be wonderful, but we have more pressing issues. Do you mind coming to Paris to speak with the Supreme Commander in person?”

“Not at all,” the Baernish Lord responded.

Parisian Reception Courtyard, Paris

After the day’s journey to Paris, the Baernish Lord Astarlan met with Lord Patrik La Fortunate, Supreme Commander of Imperial Forces to discuss the joint invasion of Ireland. Lord Patrik outlined his plan, “Now, I propose when our forces launch attacks, we do so with the intent of creating a puppet regime loyal to the both of us. Call it the, Irish Free State, or something else lovably enticing for the people of the Irish Isle.

“I would like to know the Baernish intelligence of the southern fishing villages, because pass bys by Task Force Channel have revealed that aside from Cork, the area is relatively open for assault by our amphibious assault troops,” Lord Patrik paused, “So, what does the Duchy know?”

Wawel castle

"To the south, an empire of darkness exists. It is expansionist and agressive, apparently ruled over by a shadow daemon. To the east, we have received word that Rus rose again and is seeking to convert everyone to their ways - treating all other kingdoms as brutal savages it needs to conquer and subjugate for their own good.", Count Bogumir, the Defender Of The Kingdom, relayed information he gathered about lands beyond Pogoria's borders.

King Radoslaw looked at his Council, presiding in the spacious halls of Wawel Castle. Barely six days have passed since he took the throne, and so far, good news were few and far between.

"My lord, we have known for some time now that other kingdoms of similar power exist, but making contact with them was incredibly difficult. But from what the good Count says, we need to seek allies."

The King nodded, agreeing with duke Chociebor - his chancellor and spymaster. Of course, this much was obvious.

Dobrogost, the Druid Speaker, spoke up from his seat near the far side of the hall, "If I may suggest, the tribes surrounding us may be willing to form a coalition, especially after hearing the Tsardom's rhethoric. It wants to turn everyone into city-dwellers, and treats forests as mere resources."

"With all respect due to the druids", duke Chociebor interjected sarcastically, "If we are to stand against a powerful kingdom, we'll need a serious ally."

"The woodsmen tribes have defended this land for centuries! I will not stand for...", Dobrogost rose from his seat suddendly, but the King interrupted him.

"Sit down, master druid. Please.", Radoslaw spoke in a steely voice, surprising himself most of all, "I'm sure the Duke did not mean to insult the brave woodsmen under your protection."

The Duke thought about shooting off another sarcastic remark, but decided against it. The young King had more character than it seemed from first glance.

"Of course, sire. My apologies.", he chose to say instead.

"I will have to admit, however, that he is right. We'll need more than just bravery to counter the Red Tsardom.", the King continued his thought.

"There are the Danes, sire.", count Bogumir decided to suggest.

Nods followed. The Danes were not exactly friends of Pogoria, of course, and more than once skirmishes over access to Pomeranian amber strained relations between the kingdoms, but it should be possible to form an alliance of necessity with them.

"Send an envoy immediately."

Result: Pogoria begins forging a coalition of kingdoms and barbarian tribes against the Red Tsardom.

Missive to the Red Tsar

To Your Imperial Majesty,

I, Iason Constantine, the Elected Basileus of the Glorius Republic of Crimea, am writing to in regards to your explicit principles of governance. While we appreciate your zeal for freedom, we would like your assurance that you will attack neither the Republic, nor our ally, the Despotate of Byzantium, for we share holy bonds of brotherhood and ancestry stretching back far into history. An attack on the Depostate would be regarded exactly as if you had broached our own borders with belligerent intent. I feel that Your Imperial Majesty would be most displeased in having the only two elective governments to exist to engage in open warfare, thus, we would like your assurance that you will engage in warfare with neither the Republic, nor her sovereign and eternal ally, the Despotate.

Sincerely,
Basileus Iason Constantine

Imperial Palace, Moscow

Tsar Mikhail-I, Tsar of Muscovy and all the Civilized Russias sat back in his chair quietly sipping Tea as the 150th anaversery of the Tsardom came to a close. Earlier that day, he had watched as the Red Imperial Army made their celebratory parade in Red Square and led a tour of his highest ranking officers and officials, members of the Supreme Soviet, accademy heads as well as a few dignitaries of a specially made exibition of various artifacts of the Tsardom's history, from a selection of paintings commemorating various victories and acomlishments in improving the quality of life of her citizens to the Imperial Collection of Banners of conquered Nobles (which the rest of Moscow's populace could now veiw as well). Recently a Lavish state feast had been finished, a couple hours of conversation and dancing for the prominant officials had gone well as he engaged conversation with the Generals and members in the affairs. However, it was getting late and a fair number of people had already left. As such, the Tsar waited for the song to end before assending to the podium and tapping his fine china cup with a spoon before speaking.

"Men and Woman of the Tsardom. Once again, i must thank you for your presence at this fine celibration of the 150 years in which our nation has existed. In this century and a half since Vladimir the Strong first put an end to the Nobles and Prince of old Moscow and vanquishing their cruel opression and subjugation of all beneith them. Today, we have looked back on our past, saw how the lot of serfs and peasants often seen as nothing more than beasts of burden and Ursiods, often seen by the nobility as but a source of Pelts to adorn themselves with of our ansestors emerged as this, a mighty power in Russia. A Land of unparalled prosperity, one in which knowlage thrives and is available to all and one in which even the lowest commoner can ascend to the highest of ranks and preteige, should his mind and soul be willing and one which breaks the chains and blindfolds of others by their opressors and brings to thim this light of civilization. In these 150 years, we have grown from a backwards backwater principality to a mighty Empire, but will we stop here, No i say!" He set the now empty tea cup down and was presented a glass of Vodka "As such i end this night to a Toast, which i dedicate to the Future. One better and brighter than the world now, and one which will be happy to share with the world!"

With that, the remaining guests raised their glasses and corused "To the Future!"

"Now once again, i thank you for your presence at this event. However, we are well into the night and the time has come to end the celibrations. Look Forward to the Future as we strive for a better. Dasvidania, my friends, and farewell!"

Imperial Palace, the Next Morning

The Tsar sat down at his desk in his private study as his personnal attendant, Natasha Vladimirova, presented him with a set of papers.

"Anything of note come lately?" he said to the young woman.

"We have received a letter from Chrimea." She said as she handed the letter to him.

The Tsar set down the letter "This seems reasonable. What could we gain from such an attack, we are a fair distance away from either Crimea or Byzantium to try such a move. Besides such an attack on Byzantium would only cause unnecessary conflict between the Orthodox communities." Although the Patriarchy of Moscow officially denounced the New faith that came out of Byzantium, they still held the sights and relics within to be sacred. "Natasha, dispatch two diplomatic teams to Crimea and Byzantium to respectively confirm a commitment to peace on our part and to discuss potential alliances. Tell them to each carry 10 Model-1689 Rifles and a few Ermine Pelts to be presented to their repsective royalties as gifts of goodwill."

"Yes, your majesty."

He smiled brightly at Martin Le Brave, who, he had been astonished to learn, held no rank outside the Imperial Priesthood. Not that he minded, per say, but having grown up in the rigid hierarchy of the Sovereign Duchy, he did find it odd. Pushing the thought from his mind, he bent forward and said;

Parisian Reception Courtyard

"We have few agents in the area, though those we do seem to support your own's reports. Overflights by dragonets did not spot any great fortresses or armies, so we ought to be relatively unopposed. A puppet state strikes me as the best way to minimize resistance to our rule, though this will have to be approved by His Grace the Duke as well." Lord Astarlan smiled slightly, pleased that the crystals that were so commonplace in the Duchy were so valuable in Paris.

"We'll commit a dragon carrier with half our navy, as well as most of our conventional forces to the invasion. The majority of our dragons, as well as the other half of the fleet, however, will be needed elsewhere." And here he smiled again, but it was a much more predatory expression. "How will Ireland be divided? May I recommend that the West fall under our dominion, with the East of the island under yours?"

The cities of Eastern Ireland flew through the Supreme commander’s mind, “Yes, an Eastern and Western Sphere of Influence split would be more than acceptable. I would normally be worried by this talk of ‘other business’ for your dragons, but, we do have that lovely non-aggression agreement, no?

“Now, onto the forces the Empire will field… For the opening operations, securing a beachhead, securing local hearts and minds, establishing moment, et cetera, the Empire will provide Task Force Channel, the Knights of the Shrine at Le Havre, 200 Kappa Marines, the 2nd, 3rd, 7th, and 9th National Armies, under the command of General Paris de Paris. I would prefer to make an attack at a target of importance to Cork, and the city itself to set up operations in Ireland, though I would like the input of the Baernish about that also.

Lord Patrik La Fortunate signaled to an aide standing just out of the path of the speaking dignitaries, who brought forth a pair of maps, “These are, obviously the Isles of Britannia.”

“This is a map of possible landing zones, the small red circles are primary landings, the squares are secondary landings.”

“Do the Baernish see any validity in this strategy, of attacking a primary landing zone and following it up with an attack on a major target, like Cork? Another possibility is to attack these ‘secondary’ targets, and weaken the will of the ‘primary’ targets creating support for our puppets.

“Hm, though we could start our invasion even earlier, by creating the puppets before we actually commit forces to the sieges. This would also probably give us targets to ‘liberate.’”

"Indeed we do, Your Excellency. The dragons, as well as perhaps three thousand cavalry, will be needed to hold the Duchy, and are not likely to leave our territory. We do not have the luxury of fortresses as yet, and so must maintain an army at home against possible attacks." Also for an additional invasion of Spain, but that hadn't been decided on yet...

Imperial Chronicles

Message to the Red Tsar

To his Imperial Majesty,

Praise to the Lord God and his Son Jesus Christ.

Sir, both Despotate of Byzantium and the Tsardom share common goals in Science and commerce and we seek to expand cooperation in the Scientific endeavour. We understand your disdain of magic and the reluctance of the Patriarchy of Moscow's reluctance to recognise the Despot as the Living Saint, but perhaps there are still avenues of cooperation between the Universities of the Despotate with those in your nation and the expansion of trade ties. Do remember that the Patriarchy of Constantinople and Moscow both still believe in Christ and in the Holy Trinity. We also hope that you will enjoy our gifts of alchemically enhanced swords and armour.

Christ has Risen,
Flavius Petrus Sabbatius Iustinianus.

NSMI Rusé , La Manche

The hawk flew quickly across the sky, scanning the ocean for the Rusé, the bird finally found the Rusé, “Admiral Ska, Admiral Ska, new orders, wait, new orders!”

The Admiral Ska, a Kappa from the interior Seine looked at the now transforming laguz with contempt, during his career as an officer in the Imperial Navy he had grown to fear laguz visits from outside his personal network, and this one was definitely outside his network. “Yes,” Ska began, turning to his bridge crew, “Slow us down.”

“Admiral, the Supreme Commander orders you to return to Le Havre, the entire taskforce is returning. Lord Patrik is planning something big.”

“What?”

“I don’t know, Admiral”
“Well, I’ll have to ask him in person when we get the, will you stay for the ride in, sister.”

“I will, Admiral, thank you.”

Well, as I said earlier, your representative will be working with General Paris de Paris of the 9th Army. Your naval liaison will be a Kappa named L’Imperator and his staff. He is a retired admiral, so he should know what he is doing.

“I believe we need to move quickly, before the people on the other side of the Manche catch wind of our operation, make no mistake, I know there are organized on Greater Britannia, the only problem is I don’t know how much. Again, we need to move quickly. How soon can we mobilize?” Lord Patrik asked both the Baernish Lord, and the man carrying the map.

The Aelomae fell from the sky with little warning, arriving on the Byzantine courtyard in a harmless but sudden fluttering of wind. Having accomplished the task for which it was summoned, the air elemental dispersed almost immediately, falling apart in stiff gusts of breeze that sent fallen leaves twirling across the ancient stones in front of the Byzantine palace, leaving nothing for the flustered guards but a simple leather message canister. It contained a papyrus scroll, upon which was written the following message:

Hail to you, Flavius Petrus Sabbatius Iustinianus, great emperor of Byzantium.

Know that I am Pharaoh Atum-Ra, the great king, king of the sands and the four quarters of the world, king of the Nile and all of Egypt.

Hear now that it was made apparent to me by the great Ra and all the gods that I should search a righteous prince after my own heart; and that I should form a great pact with him, so that our empires may stand the tests of all time.

Therefore I have looked through the lands of the world, and sought, and sent out many messengers. And they returned to me saying, call thee out Iustinianus, the emperor of the Byzantines, for the gods have appointed him to lordship over the whole of the northern world.

So it is that I propose to you this, oh righteous ruler: that we form a great pact, and never make war upon one another. Should you accept, I announce that I shall never resolve on war against your state. I will send an emissary bearing the gifts of the Nile, and I will respect the traditions, customs and religions of your great empire and never shall let any of my governors and subordinates look down on or insult them as long as I shall live.

Thus spoke I, Pharaoh Atum-Ra, who is honoured by the gods of the city of Sais, of Luxor and Karnak, of Hamunaptra, and of the Great Temple of Memphis.

[Translation: The Pharaoh proposes to the Emperor that Byzantium and Egypt sign at least a treaty of non-aggression, and perhaps a mutually beneficial pact of alliance. And that they exchange ambassadors. In a very long-winded sort of manner ;).]

Hail Pharaoh Atum-RA, King of the Nile and all of Egypt,

I, the Byzantine Despot, Flavius Petrus Sabbatius Iustinianus, greet you warmly. I hope that the gifts of the Greeks we bring, of Olive oil, Wine, silk and jewelery prove satisfactory to you. Indeed we look favourably on such a great pact; an alliance between our two great nations. We will also respect the traditions, customs and religions of your great empire and we will not view you as inferiors but equals. We agree to an exchange of ambassadors and a treaty of non-agression, and mutually beneficial pact of an alliance. We also hope that trade between our great nations would flourish as they would of old.

Despite the theological differences between our respective Patriarchies, the Red Tsardom would be more than willing to establish trade with the Despotate, allowing for new goods to reach our people and creating new markets for the Tsardom's industries. As well, to enhance our understanding of this world, the Tsardom's universities, Including the Imperial Academy of Science and Engineering and the Imperial Academy of Alchemy would be willing to send envoys to your nations.

To His Imperial Majesty,

We have recieved the gifts of you empire, and we are glad to have them. We the Republic take much interest in the rifles that your envoys delivered and demonstrated. While the Republic has made use of some blackpowder, we find this new and remarkable way to be astonishing. The Republic would like to take part in this and requests trade and the exchange of knowledge between our nations, and in the spirit of that trade, please accept our gifts. I hope that Your Majesty finds his gift of one of the largest rubies we have to be fitting for the Red Tsar. We also hope you enjoy the bounty of the Black Sea in the form of fine sturgeon caviar and otter pelts.
