Karl Bist was receiving some good and some bad news lately. The good news was that The Company’s small commerce raiders were performing well and bringing in a good number of unarmed merchants. The bad news was the ISA was looking more resilient than first thought. They had a lot of big ships. Captain Morrison had recently returned from a scrap with some of their armed freighters. He had gotten nothing from the exchange and had his flagship savaged. The Drake would be laid up in the yards for quite some time.

More bad news was that the other Wardog’s that had been sent on recon had returned having garnered only the most basic facts about their targets militaries. They had however acquired plenty of information on possible planetary targets along with plenty of civilian chatter. Analyzing it all and coming up with an actionable target list would take the intel boys a lot of time.

The war council had held many long meetings on what to do. A decision was made that The Company needed to overhaul its ships. They needed better hyperdrives to escape possible interdiction. In the past they had always been able to outfight all their opponents. That was not the case now. A plan was drawn up to refit all their Wardog class destroyers with better hyperdrives. The Wardog currently under construction would have to be cancelled to conduct the new work. This move would also allow the Drake to be repaired very quickly as she could simply raid her incomplete sister for parts rather than wait for them to be fabricated. The three Landsknecht class battleships would also undergo modifications. In light of the last battle, they would have their interdiction gear removed and replaced with more powerful hyperdrive capacitors and additional jamming equipment. Any refits on the assault carriers would have to wait. Strategically the company would bide their time for a while longer and allow their Pikeman raiders and the intel department to do their work.

The commanders also realized they had an acute need for a cruiser design to lead destroyer task forces. Design work would begin, but where the material necessary to actually build them would come from was unclear.

Changes in OOB:
The Wardogs will become 5+3S+1H+1I+1D ships, while the Landsknecht’s will become 35+5S+6D+3H+1C3I ships.

Humanist Union Space
Dayab
The Lure

Even as the planetary defense ships prudently hung back to provide defensive cover the Humanist Union naval forces wasted no time on waiting to see how the Dominatrixiat ships would respond to their charge. The small force opened fire immediately upon attaining range and the accompanying tactical projections: the vacuum was suddenly filled with a myriad of flying death: railcannons announced by plasma flares as their lethal projectiles left their barrels, autocannon streams by their green, brightly-glowing pulse fields, and missile swarms only by the occasional glint of starlight. The fire was heavily focused: most of it on one of the unlucky Athena-class warships, the remaining bulk, that not expected to miss due to ECM interference and enemy interception, at a trio of the barrel-shaped Durga-class destroyers, with only a tiny smattering being thrown at a fourth one of those vessels. None of the primary targets was projected to be able to continue shooting, which was good enough as far as the James Meyer's commander was concerned: he wouldn't waste time firing into a disabled hulk, not when there were lives on the line, not the least of which being his own.

For their part, the Humanists also suffered under withering fire that was projected to be on the same order as that of the Humanist forces'. The irony was lost on the combat computers, but not on the navymen, even as their ships were savaged under enemy guns. One of the 150-class tactical cruisers had the misfortune of being the chosen prey of the enemy's destroyers: even as they let lose volleys of fire that would help seal the fate of the foreign interlopers, the crew of the undergunned tactical cruiser suffered under withering fire that left their vessel barely recognizable and barely functional; briefly and unbidden, the ship's interdictors flared to life, failing to achieve a proper field before being shut down again. The other target of the enemy forces, the battleship James Meyer itself, fared somewhat better, despite being the target of a much greater volume of fire: protected by the defensive gear of safely-distant PDF ships and less-than-safe naval ships fighting alongside it, it took a severe beating, but one not so severe as it would have with only its shields and own assorted defensive gear to protect it.

Independent State Alliance
Open Space
ISN Nidhoggur

In the Independent State Alliance, there was a quiet fuhror as the invitations to the Archduke's party spred among the High Lords and the myriad of other, lesser families invited. Alexander Ruz, the youngest of the High Lords, was on-board his family's dreadnought, the ISN Nidhoggur, when his invitation found him. Ruz didn't bother to snap at the aide who disturbed him with the message: it was well-known that he hated to be disturbed while practicing his swordplay, and he reasoned that the meek-looking man who waddled up to him in his training room, yammering apologies and bearing what looked to be actual paper had a good reason for disturbing him. Scanning over the sheet with hard green eyes and a neutral scowl, he found that he was right, perhaps more so than he expected. Giving the aide a curt nod of dismissal, he kept his features carefully neutral: it wouldn't do to show the peons his interest in what he had just read. Surviving statesmanship was something like surviving in swordsmanship: the less you broadcasted, the less likely an enemy was to predict you. Ruz's own father and predecessor as High Lord had been fond of saying this, though Ruz privately doubted the man, morbidly obese as he had been, had ever actually lifted a sword for anything but the occasional absurdly old-fashioned painting.

Alexander Ruz was perhaps not his father in body, lean and healthy and bald where the latter had been fat and in possession of a full head of hair right until the point where a shuttle crash had killed him, but he was not all that different in mind. Celebrating a daughter attaining majority was, in the world of most Imperial nobility, a polite way of saying she was on the offering for marriage. The Archduke and his family were powerful: even the self-centered nobles of the ISA knew this, and in an alliance with them, Ruz saw a chance to perhaps break the stalemate the High Lords of the ISA found themselves in. It was ambitious and certainly dangerous; a political alliance with a foreign power could easily unite one's enemies as help smash them, but the Ruz family had not become one of the two most powerful by observing the status quo. Like his father, Alexander Ruz had what he thought of as vision.

Resolving to RSVP immediately and anticipating (correctly) that his fellow nobility would do much the same, he tucked the invitation in his waistband and returned his sword to the rack. He wondered if the ship's computer had any potentially-useful information on current goings-on and popular subjects in Gilead, or on the Archduke and his family. If not, he reasoned, he'd find some. He had a lot of studying to do in the time leading up to the party, and he was resolved to be prepared to stand above the rabble. The Ruz family, and more importantly, Alexander Ruz, would move forward.

--
OOC1: Ohma, see the OOC thread for comments on our battle, particularly specific details you may/may not agree with.
OOC2: Thirdfain, I only covered Alexander Ruz in my post, but as I indicated, others will show at the actual affair. I've one question: one of the High Lords is "new" nobility, basically minted in the conflicts that led up to the ISA's relative stabilization. He's a disgraced admiral who got called back out of necessity and siezed the moment, but I'm not sure that his status as an ISA High Lord would qualify him for an invitation considering his rather less remarkable breeding.
Truth fears no trial.

The Executive Council had been monitoring the situation in the Chicago system very closely. It appeared that major fighting was now over. The combined Melconian and Chamaran fleets had rolled over the Chicago system’s defenders with relative ease. The battle data was already being pored over to find out what lessons could be learned.

Several ships had been lost. The fast cruisers had fared quite poorly; 2 Phoenix class had been lost and the other two had been severely damaged. They would need significant yard time to be repaired. 5 Spirit Class destroyers were also written off as complete losses. Over all, the fleet had held up better than expected. The battle net had proved its worth; when Melconian ships were targeted by massed human fire, the battle net made coordinating defensive countermeasures very effective and allowed damaged ships to withdraw in good order. Because of this system, most ships had escaped serious damage but nearly every ship in the fleet sported some battle scars.

Tactically it appeared that standard Melconian doctrine had been vindicated. Admiral D’lak’s use of diversionary attacks and ruses seemed to have provided little benefit. Some thought that the reason the Phoenix class cruisers took such a beating was because they were sent in as bait. Evidence pointed to the humans knowing the Melconians were coming. Most ruses were worthless if the enemy knew your fleet was coming, which appeared to be the case in the Chicago system. Once the fleet faced the humans directly, they were Annihilated.

Great interest was stirred by the success of the Revenge class Stealth ships in the battle though. They had remained in system for weeks and gathered crucial Intel. If the Empire had a whole flotilla of stealth ships, strategic surprise really could be achieved. The design bureaus were told to start work on major stealth combatants.

As for the Chicago system, it was now almost completely under the control of the Melconian army. With total space superiority, any resistance was quickly met with indiscriminate orbital fire. Only major population or industrial hubs were not targeted for bombardment. In those areas, the army broke out new Psi weapons based on Chamaran designs and made widespread use of tactical nukes and precision orbital strikes.

Most of the fleet remained near the system, waiting for the human power’s next move. Intel had predicted several different responses the human powers might take to the Melconian’s reclaiming their lost system. Contingency plans existed for every eventuality, and the Melconian Star Empire was quite confident of victory in all of them.

Chicago system
NRS Pitch

"Reversion in thirty seconds."

"Confirm stealth fields operational."

"Confirmed, Captain. All stealth equipment is activated and functioning normally."

"Acknowledged. Rig ship for silent running. General quarters; all hands to battle stations."

Captain Carlton's command was carried out at once, as extraneous electronic equipment was deactivated shipwide. Most crew were already at their battle stations and had been for several minutes, but the few that weren't scrambled for their duty stations as klaxons briefly went off. The ship's lighting went from normal white to red, signifying the silent running order.

"Reversion in five. Four. Three. Two. One. Mark."

The stars' blur finally lessened and stopped, and the Chicago system's binary star loomed relatively large in the front viewscreen.

"Sensors, analysis?"

"Reading a large battle fleet in the system, sir. Details are coming in now; it looks like there's been a battle, but the shooting's over."

"Acknowledged. Keep scanning. Now we'll see if they can pick us up."

-Dayab, Decoy Force-

A cluster of strobing lights signaled the detonation of another volley of Skyflowers among the Humanist fleet.

---

The Decoy force were holding their own...if only just. The Agrona had come under heavy attack almost immediately, and had been forced to redirect most of her firepower toward her own defense; as a result, Lilith squadron, the Chelidonis and the Ching Shih weren't able to direct as much of their own firepower against the enemy fleet. However their task wasn't to eliminate the Humanists...not yet at least.

Raimunda looked from the forward tactical display to the small countdown timer on one of the other displays around the Agrona's command center, 3 minutes.
"Xian", the Agrona's XO turned back to face Raimunda, "damage report."

"We've lost part of the third forward laser array, launchers 18-20, and there is a hull breach in sections..." she brought up the relevant schematic on one of the nearby screens. "4 and 5. Nothing critical, but we'll be in trouble if we keep this up."

Rai nodded and asked the rest of the force to report in. Lilith squadron had been hit the hardest so far, without the Agrona to screen them, or room to maneuver, the small Durgas were easily overwhelmed, thankfully none of the craft were so badly damaged that they couldn't continue the fight or retreat; the two Valkyries had suffered only minor damage, however they were currently the only ships able to direct appreciable ordinance at the Humanists. She switched back to communicate with the rest of the force.

"Captain, analysis indicates that the ships are not Imperial designs, or anything close. It appears that the colonial fleet, such as it was, has been destroyed. Surviving attacker vessels seem to be engaging in repairs. They don't seem to detect our presence." The sensor officer paused. "Sir, it also appears that the alien warships are carrying out orbital bombardment of the Dyson plates. Analysis of surface data from the nearer plate indicates the use of tactical nuclear warheads in the population centers."

Wrigley plate
Chicago system

Unara stalks through the outskirts of the city, the dust laden sky lit by the flashes of distant nuclear bombardment. “Okay fan out, scoutpods have already checked the area but orders are orders.” the six Chamaran warriors split into pairs and start checking the buildings as they make their way down the street.

Crack, the sound of the shot coming after the pain as Unara's shield bubble flickers into visibility and her skinsuit stiffens in its wake. Unara whirling to face her attacker bringing her rifle round to bear on him, the human soldier half crouched under his camouflage sheet and reseating his gun against his shoulder for another shot. But before either Unara or the human can fire a glowing path is burnt through the air to the human's torso and keeps on burning right through that. Unara lowers her weapon as her attacker slumps, glancing over her shoulder at her battle sister.
“They never learn, humans.”
“Fifth time this patrol, your luck must be fading. How bad's the wound?”
“Barely pierced the underlay.” Unara smiles beneath her combat mask “Lets keep going, we've got a lot more ground to cover.” The six warriors slowly gather up and move on.

Keeshi looks to her sisters and the new code as it successfully compiles and scrolls past her vision.
“Okay lets try this again. Laser alignment?”
“Check.”
“Interface software?”
“Check.”
“Receiver ready?”
“The Melconians indicate so.”
“Start procedure.”
In the depths of the ships command center a single button is pressed. Laser links established with a nearby Melconian flotilla, the handshake faltering a moment then going through before data begins to flow. Packets leaving the Chamaran systems first passing through a series of translation programs to allow it to be transmitted to the very different computers aboard the Melconian vessels.
“How are we doing?”
“Melconian acknowledgements indicate a 4 percent ratio of dropped outgoing packets so not too bad. However their must be a glitch in the inbound translation code, packet drop is averaging at 25 percent.”
“See if you can figure it out, for now proceed with test.”
“Attention Melconian command, we are now proceeding to stage 2.”
As Keeshi transmits that to their collaborators in this experiment the 'Coloured maze' slowly unfolds its sensor arrays. The masts extending top and bottom as drones stream out to to form a wider receiver pattern for the array.
“Capacitors are charged. Commencing active scan.”
The sensor cruiser goes active, energy waves bouncing off everything nearby as sensor data begins to stream into the datalink to the Melconian network. The Chamaran's stress testing the bandwidth with the element they consider their best contribution to the Melconian taskforce they're coupled with.

"Captain, we have a sensor array powering up. Massive, looks to be on par with an Intrepid. It may be able to detect us."

Carlton's reaction was instant. "Confirm all non-essential systems shut down."

"Confirmed, Captain. Non-essential electronics are deactivated shipwide, stealth equipment is operating normally, and we are not maneuvering."

"Aye. Helm, Conn. Stand by to evacuate the system by the first available vector if there's any reaction from the alien fleet. Sensors, prepare to drop probes."

A pair of ayes answered his command.

Chicago System
Aboard the Fleet Destroyer Forest of the Dead Lt. R’Yris was very busy indeed. There were a multitude of tasks to do after the battle had ended. Luckily most of the drudge work, such as logging debris from the battle, was one by the ship's AI. She still had to look out for possible enemy intruders and work on the systems Integration with The Chamaran's. The Forest of the Dead had gotten that "honor" due to their extensive experience with the Chamarans.

The Lt. was taking a break from the integration work and was going over the latest data from the Battle Net. The AI's were chattering on about something. R'Yris brought up the AI's data feed. They were talking about Human drive trail signatures. The Lt, almost dismissed their conversation except for the fact that Ripper, the Ship's Ai, was saying there was a new signature in the system.

That got the Lt's attention very quickly. A lot of the other AI's were saying the signature was too faint to be a new ship; it must have been an old trail from the battle. Hundreds cris-crossed the system already. Ripper said it was a stealth ship, in his opinion. He had seen a similar trail before, on the diplomatic mission that contacted the Chamaran's.

At this point Y'ris interrupted the AI's "conversation." The drive trails looked suspiciously like a stealth ship to her too. Time to get a higher authority involved.

The information went quickly up the chain of command. Admiral D'lak ordered all ships in system to keep on their current business, but all the sensor crews and AI's were to start looking for this possible stealth ship as hard as possible without tipping it off. That meant no active sensors. Interdictors and a pursuit squadron were also put on immediate standby to deal with the intruder if it was found. The admiral also called up the Chamaran commander.

"We have as situation here. We believe that there is a stealth ship operating in the system. Unless its one of yours, we think a human ship has infiltrated the system some time in the past 24 hours. We're trying to flush it out quietly. We'll likely need the help of your support cruiser to do it."

Coloured maze support cruiser(sensors)
Chicago system

“Test complete, power down.” Keeshi has a copy of the data moved to her PDA as she heads for the lower hall. Though unfortunately the controller wont have time to go off shift, she's barely left the command center when the shipwide announcement system sounds on “Attention crew of the Coloured Maze, This is HuntMistress Ossara. A human stealth vessel is suspected to be present in this system, as the only vessel with partial integration with the Melconian battle net and extensive sensor systems your aid has been requested by our allies. As of now you are on detached duty and will receive orders directly from Melconian fleet command, all personnel are to report to duty stations.” Keeshi sighs and heads back towards the command center.

The Coloured maze remains motionless, its sensor arrays still unfolded but passive as a message flits across the laser link to the Forest of the dead “This is Eshi, shipmistress of the Coloured Maze, we stand ready to assist.”

Admiral D'lak said,
"Good. Right now we are only taking passive measures to find this intruder. Admiral N'Drak is in charge of the search."

Admiral N'Drak knew his chances of finding a true stealth ship in the mess that was the sensor picture of the Chicago system were low. But as usual D'Lak was trying the subtle approach first. The only problem with that is that the phantom ship might very well depart before N'Drak was given the go ahead to actively hunt it.

The sensor officer shook his head in disbelief. "Bombardment still in progress, sir. I think they mean to kill everyone on the plate."

Carlton's mouth was stretched into a thin line. "I think we've seen enough. Sensors, stand by active arrays for a single sweep and prepare to launch probes. Helm, stand by to clear the system as soon as we get sensor returns."

Acknowledgments came from the named stations and the entire crew tensed for action.

"Sensors, mark."

A pair of stealth-plated spy satellites cleared their launch tubes and started drifting away from the frigate in opposite directions. Five seconds later, the frigate's powerful active sensors lit up the void of space, sweeping it for ships.

Chicago System

"Active Sensors detected! The source is the edge of the system."
Shouted N'Drak's sensor's chief.

N'Drak hurried over.
"Confirm the origin and get a lock."

"Yes sir!"

The Melconian ships in the system responded by turning on their own scanners and taking a close look at the intruder. N'Drak could tell immediately from the scan that the ship had charged its warp drive and was probably seconds from leaving the system.

"Pursuit squadron is to move in now. Once we have a targeting solution fire all weapons in range,"
N'Drak ordered.

That was mostly a futile gesture. The pursuit squadron would probably not get its interdictors in place in time to interfere with the jump. Meanwhile only the Ancestor's Wrath missiles had the range to reliably target the intruder and they had a long prep time. Two destroyers were close enough to open up at extreme range. It wouldn't be enough.

"Sensor returns secured. Captain, the enemy fleet is opening fire!"

"Helm, punch it!"

The helmsman didn't even wait for the order; as soon as he was addressed he yanked back on the activation lever. The starfield warped and blurred as the frigate leaped forward, vanishing from the system as enemy fire flashed through where it had been.

Chicago System

"Do a sweep of the entire system with active sensors, and keep doing it."
Ordered N'Drak.

"They may be more intruders out there and they probably dropped drones."

N'Drak was quite annoyed at D'lak's handling of the situation. As he had predicted, the enemy ship had gotten away. At least they had a sensor profile of the ship now; maybe it matched something on the Chamaran's database. With the Ancestor's blessing then they'd at least know which human faction had been snooping around before the ground campaign was even over.

Executive Council Chambers
Many on the Executive council had also been less than impressed with D'lak's handling of the Chicago system invasion. After a few backroom deals were made, it was decided that she would be replaced with a more orthodox field commander. She would be transferred to command the development of the new stealth squadron. Ostensibly this was a promotion. Fleet Admiral Xu'tien would replace D'lak. He was an old war dog who had run the Navy's most presidios academy for many years and had a hand in shaping current fleet doctrine.

The Arbeiterplaza
Kaldigrad
Syndicalist International

It was early morning. Iota Persei hung low in the sky, bloated and red through the industrial haze of the city skyline. It's sluggish rays leaked between the distant forms of the suburban arcologies, painting the Arbeiterplaza's antique brick in warm colors.

From his balcony overlooking the plaza, the Chairman watched with a sense of displacement. The only figures moving in the vast square, fit to hold tens of thousands, were thirteen figures in Militia Union dress greys.

Forty-five thousand men and women stood at attention, in long rows and Romanesque blocks. There was little sound, except for their war-banners flapping in the warm morning breeze.

"Color Guard! Advance!"

The command was chopped and precise, as were the movements of the soldiers as then marched to the tall flagpole in the center of the square.

"Color Guard- Raise the Colors."

As the red and black raced up the pole, the strains of The Internationale rose from the military band.

Far out in the crowd, his face scarred and lost in the crowd, Comrade-Corporal Emmeal was overwhelmed by emotion. He was surrounded by foreigners- Makayans, short and towheaded and Asiastic, with their odd accents and absurd facial hair. They wore the signs of his unit, the emblazons of the decimated 23rd Shock.

"For the first time, this flag is being risen. The voices of the Makayan people have crossed the entirety of the Human sphere for this moment. With the victory of humanist, anti-fascist ideology in the Makayan polls, our nations have become united in the bonds of class brotherhood. The People's Republic of Makay is welcomed into the Internationale with open arms- and The 23rd Shock Army has earned pride of place in raising this standard. It was your toil, Caliphegians, which liberated Makay. It was your perseverance, Makayans, which allowed you to stand against the unthinkable. Together, we are stronger. Today marks the end of the 23rd Shock Army. For valor in combat, the High Syndicates have unanimously voted to bestow upon you the rank of Guards of the Syndicalist cause- heroes who fought to the last for mankind."

The Chairman bowed, stiffly and completely- a traditional Kaldic sign of respect for one's superiors.

"Congratulations, soldiers of the 23rd Combined Guards Army. In the brotherhood of workers we all grow stronger- and none more so than you."

"Colour guard- Dismissed!"

A new flag flew over Kaldigrad.

Deep Space
NRS Pitch

The frigate dropped out of hyperspace a few minutes later, far from the Chicago system.

"Status report!"

"All systems normal, Captain. We were not hit."

"Very well. Helm, plot another quick jump in case they tracked our vector, and then set course for Pinnacle. I think this is important enough to cut short our mission."

"Aye, Captain."

A few minutes later, the frigate leaped forward through the stars on a new heading, leaving the spot of space as empty as it was before.

Humanist Union
NRS Lightning

Almost all the way across known space, other Nashtari warships were transitioning from hyperspace as well. The NRS Lightning, her escort group, and the convoy they were shepherding to the Humanist Union emerged at the edge of the New Khan system.

"New Khan approach, this is the NRS Lightning inbound escorting a grain convoy as scheduled. Requesting approach vector, over."

Gilead orbit
The Affiliation of Baronies

“Okay what do we have?” Controller Arri looks across the Pod's meeting room.
“Well we've got a partial view of the palace layout from Psi trace of the active minds. Doesn't tell us anything about how to get in though i suspect that area is the main hall and our best target.” The feline taps the overhead view indicating an area dishearteningly near the center of the fortified complex.
Arri sighs softly “How have our agents faired?”
“Well we lost two trying to get plans for the palace, don't worry the Medusa worked okay. We've got some more looking around the grounds but we haven't heard back from them yet.”
Arri turns to survey the image of the palace on the viewscreens, this operation was never once considered easy but there is little time to prepare.

A fair number of said tools have been employed for the purpose of reconnaissance, the palace has been observed from every possible angle, every entrance to the complex noted for investigation and the coming and going of people watched. The faint signals of active scanners at the main entrance picked up by the strain of focusing dishes....All information is made available to the Minds behind the tools.

Even in the depths beneath the palace, its tunnel and underworks, the feline's tools have commenced their invasive scurrying. Each Janissary alert for the all but inevitable automated security systems, moving cautiously in the hopes of finding for their owners some path via which the palace above could become vulnerable to their designs.

Above the ground once more other possibilities are explored as personages in the Baron's employ are studied in their coming and going from the palace where they work. The search for one whose journey would take them into the beautiful wilderness where in they would become vulnerable to the Chamaran minds.

Nashtar, Helios System
Liberty Hall

The palace of the Imperial Governor still stood, for now serving as the seat of the Nashtari provisional government and, in one wing, the Constitutional Convention.

"Order!" The chairman, Alexander Harper, had a harried look on his face as he called for silence in the chamber. Dexter Black, the de facto head of the National Sovereignty party delegation, had just finished an utterly predictable speech on domestic policy, calling for constitutional provisions barring citizenship to those who had opposed the Nashtari revolution, as well as for heavy trade tariffs designed to encourage isolation from former Imperial powers that Sovereignty felt may wish to become empires themselves. Some of his last remarks had elicited quite a reaction from the assembled delegates, especially the Free Trade and Democratic Labor contingents. Eventually the floor quieted, yielding to the banging of his gavel.

This was going to be a long session. "The chair recognizes..." He pinched the bridge of his nose in frustration, trying to quell a headache. "I'm terribly sorry, the delegate's name slips my mind. The gentleman from Democratic Labor. The subject at hand is domestic policy, I remind you."

New Khan System
Humanist Union
Orbital Traffic Control (High)

Somewhere within the depths of New Khan's orbital traffic control station, a posthuman operator plugged into the traffic authority's buzzing, busy computer system received the NRS Lightning's transmission. In seconds he had glanced over the carefully-balanced arrival and departure schedule for New Khan's surface-to-orbit stations, and found one satisfactory.

He sent it immediately, along with a verbal message, "NRS Lightning, this is New Khan Orbital Traffic control. Please proceed upon the following route: a data packet follows. Welcome to the Humanist Union," even as he transmitted his message, he sent reroute orders for other craft around New Khan, clearing a route for the planet's PDF...just in case. One of the mobile units, Lenaard's, was near by in absolute terms, but a response wouldn't be immediate: some sort of event was occupying the Navy that the traffic monitor wasn't privy to. That suited him well enough.

The fact that the visitors had brought warships was understandable and permissable: with the exception of the Humanist Union's sphere of influence, this was a wild area of space. However, he concluded as he watched things unfold, it paid to be wary.

NRS Lightning

"Conn, Sensors. There's no sign of the battle group that the Wraith encountered on first contact."

"No concern of ours. Comms, transmit acknowledgment to Control. Helm, follow the course given by Control."

"Aye, Captain." The lieutenant at the communications panel turned back to his station and activated the voice pickup. "Acknowledged, Control. We are following the prescribed course."

The cruiser's sublight engines kicked up almost imperceptibly as the line of freighters passed, covering the rear of the convoy while a pair of destroyers took the front. The frigates loitered near the center of the formation, while the other pair of destroyers flanked the cruiser. The strict escort formation would not loosen up until they reached the inner system and the security of the system's defense forces.

New Khan Orbit

By the time the convoy escort had reached what would be entry range for combat, New Khan's defensive corvettes had taken up a defensive position along the proscribed route. This, though, seemed to be a mere matter of course: the PDF ships alone didn't carry firepower on the order necessary to prove a threat to the defensive escort, and while sensors indicated their weapons as live, none of the vessels had performed a target lock on their guests, most likely for the rather bellicose message that such an action would send.

The directed path terminated not in a space elevator, but an attached freighter-hub: New Khan itself being an agri-world, it was not in any real need for foodstuffs. It seemed New Khan's Orbital Traffic Control had been instructed on the type of goods to expect.

Heavy weapons and sensor systems went to standby status as the convoy entered range of the corvettes; misunderstandings at this point would be most inconvenient.

As the ships loitered in orbit, waiting for the freighters to finish offloading their cargo, Captain Drayson started to wonder just where all the Union's warships were. They'd probably inform her it wasn't her business if she asked, but if there was something occupying their attention, she'd rather know what it was.

"Comms, patch me through to Control," she ordered brusquely, picking up a communications headset from the side of her command chair.

The comms station took a brief moment to respond. "Channel open, Captain."

She nodded. "New Khan Control, this is Acting Commodore Kelly Drayson, Nashtari Escort Detachment. We can't help but notice that your line warships are missing. Is there something they're dealing with that we should know to avoid on our way out?"

The traffic-controller observing the convoy paused briefly as he checked and double-checked permissions. He replied readily enough, however, "The naval unit you are referring to is under maneauvers at the present time. There are no specific alerts that we've received, but the nation-wide alert level was recently raised," he paused to consider, then spoke again, in a franker manner, "What that means is that someone important smells something funny, essentially. On that note, I don't believe you can expect any particular nuisances on the way out, at least, not any more than low-level pirate activity."

The City on The Hill
Gilead
The Affiliation of Baronies

Imagine a planet viewed from above, at night. The stains of human habitation are beautiful- the lights of cities and the glare of industry made jewels by perspective. Imagine a city- A vast glistening diamond, reaching out with highway-arms to it's brothers, teeming with life and activity, spread out across the plains, turning prairie canyonlike and urban. Imagine a palace- broad, low, and columned, unimpressive to Core-trained eyes, made of stone and brick and mortar like something from the distant past, lying in the middle of a broad and fertile field, a patch of what Gilead was before the city grew and claimed the continent.

This is Gilead- a world of contradictions, an oasis of civilization in the vast, thinly-peopled marches of the Periphery. It's people think of themselves as pioneers, conquering the galaxy for mankind. This, they say, is the true spirit of mankind- not the towers of Moloch, infinite and glittering and unchanging through the millenia, but the edge- that place where empty worlds, dead or useless, become teeming centers of life and commerce.

One day, the say, Gilead will be like Moloch- but it is they, those who facilitate that slow change, who are the heroes of humanity. The spark did not die with Earth- it burns here still.

The palace is called Hawthorne Stead. The Affiliation's core is not at Hawthorne Stead- the Meetinghouse in the center of the city, or perhaps the Archducal Offices, or even the assortment of government office buildings to the north could all more readily take that moniker- Hawthorne Stead is simply the house where the Archduke of Gilead lives.

Nathan Wallstone worked in the Stead's basement. He had known Jeremiah Hawthorne long enough that he called the Archduke by his first name, and recieved the same courtesy. There were three others like him- the Archduke's inner circle, trusted beyond all reproach. The Sworn Companions.
He was a gunslinger and a noble, bred and modified to the finest pedigree, trained and honed to leadership from birth.

He was responsible for the safety of the Archduke's person, and had been for years. There were few adversaries more formidable.

Two men had died recently. There was no doubt that they had been spies. Wallstone examined the diagrams of the palace and the reports of his subordinates. There would have to be more of them out there- who sent them, he simply did not know.

"I need one. Alive."
