NRS Voidsailor, outbound space corridor, Ronogho system, Nashtari core space
Day 4, Week 1, Turn 1

"Space: The final frontier. These are the voyages of the NRS Voidsailor. It's continuing mission: To explore strange new..."

"Ah, can it Lieutenant," said Lieutenant Commander Trelawney with a chuckle as he came in the door of the officers' mess. "This ain't no 20th century sci-fi serial and you ain't Captain Picard. 'Sides, I'd rather not have to deal with all the engineering problems bein' the Enterprise involves," the chief engineer added with a lopsided grin.

Lieutenant Harvey smiled back, but stopped quoting Star Trek all the same. "Sorry, sir. It's just, y'know, with us flying out into the unknown to find out just what the hell's happened, it kind of feels like it."

"I know what ya mean," the engineer answered. "Now what've we got fer grub? I ain't eaten since before we started spinnin' up the reactor core."

Harvey chuckled. "Pot roast and vegetables. Enjoy it while you can, sir; the good food won't last this whole trip."

"Don't I know it," Trelawney said with a grin of his own as he moved towards the buffet line.

[Force declaration: Four Shadow class stealth frigates, headed out on separate exploratory and scouting missions.]
It's Rogue, not Rouge!

South Brockton
Athenry
Shennanon System
Grand Duchy of Malacaster

MacNeill Peirce walked briskly down the alleyway. There was not much to look at in the slums of South Brockton, and Peirce kept his face bowed, almost shrinking into his long coat. Too the best of his knowledge, Peirce’s face had stayed out of Grand Ducal Constabulary’s database, but Peirce was not one to tempt fate. He hadn’t survived so long in the Republican Army by taking stupid chances with the Tanners and their infernal surveillance devices. He had known too many, comrades all, who had taken such risks, and were now rotting away in Kilmainham. Or dead, thought Peirce with more than a touch of sadness.

Even with his head bowed, Peirce couldn’t help but notice that everyone else walking through that alley had their heads hung equally low. They were not all furtive terrorists, much as he might hope, but merely common citizens going through the normal course of life under Malacasterian tyranny. One day, thought Peirce. One day soon we will not have to hang our heads as we walk our streets. With that thought in his mind, Peirce turned off the alleyway into a dimly lit pub.

Several men and women huddled over the bar. None even glanced up as Peirce entered. He was sure they were friends of the cause, but the less they knew, the better. Bland music blared from several oversized speakers, drowning out much of the pub’s conversation as Peirce settled into a booth nestled in the rear of the room.

“It’s been too long since I last saw ye, Neil,” said the figure seated across from him. The figure had the appearance of an elderly woman, with disheveled hair and well worn clothing, but the fire in her eyes was unmistakable. “I suspect this twas not what ya were expectin’.”

“I heard you were changing disguises, Heather, but I had no idea you got a full skin job! The Tanners’ll have no idea what they’re looking for!”

“Now, now, Neill. We have a tight schedule for tonight’s meeting, and I need to learn all I can from you. Remember, there’s a big op set for seventeen thirty. Now, tell me about our comrades from Kalingrad.” Peirce slid a slim datacard across the table.

“It might have cost an arm and a leg, but the Kalds have come through beyond our wildest dreams.” Opposite him, Heather tried in vain to suppress a wide grin as she skimmed over the datacard’s contents.

MacNeill and Heather talked in that hidden booth for well over an hour. The primary topic was the Syndicalist assistance to the Republican movement, but they touched on numerous subjects before Peirce stood to leave. He walked quickly to the bar, placing on it a small amount of money before heading for the door. Before exiting, Peirce looked back towards the booth, but his companion had already disappeared. May we meet again, though Peirce as he stepped out into the now darkened alleyway.

MacNeill Peirce navigated his way through the warren-like alleys and side streets of South Brockton, moving quickly without appearing to rush. Within ten meters of his final destination, Peirce heard the deafening roar of a string of explosions come from the city centre. He made sure to show the outward signs of surprise, but as he entered an old, run-down apartment complex, MacNeill’s heart leapt for joy, for he knew full well what had just occurred.

HES Gladius
Shennanon System
Grand Duchy of Malacaster

His Eminence’s Ship Gladius slid through the dark of space with her consorts. They were on a routine sweep of the Shennanon system’s outer asteroid belts, and were moving at speeds far below their military maximum. Just another boring patrol, thought Captain Martina Drehr, sipping a cup of hot tea as she sat on her command deck. Ever since the last revolt on Athenry, there had been a heavy fleet presence in this system, but after order had been restored on that planet, there had been precious little for it to do.

“Maam, I have a top priority dispatch from SysCom,” Drehr’s communications officer reported suddenly. Martina put down her tea.
“What does it read, Lieutenant?”

“There has been a massive bombing on the government compound in South Brockton. It appears that the Lord-Govenor has been killed, along with hundreds of staffers. Reports are still coming in down there, but Admiral Weilburg has ordered all ships insystem to go to Alert Condition Two.” The lieutenant’s voice was almost shaking.

By the Martyrs of Terra, swore Drehr, how did those fuckers get to the Lord-Govenor? Acknowledging her position as captain however, she squelched her anger.

“Very well then, Lieutenant. Set Condition Two throughout the ship.”

“Aye Aye, Maam. Condition Two set throughout the ship.”

The gulf outside of MetalKonige Space

The sleek prowler flashed out of hyperspace, sending frizzing ripples of radiation detectable across the entire sector. A holo-message blazed across all open civilian channels. Four individuals, wearing the thin, fibrous, mat black power armour of the Molochi Suicide Squad sat in the cramped cabin, the lead man wearing a huge chesire grin. He began to speak.

Woooh! Ladies and Gentlemen, our good friends... ah-hah, ah-haha... you know us, you love us, hailing from the Planet Belial in the beautiful Imperial Territory of Moloch...hoooh... we're the Molochi Technolegions Special Forces, also known as the Suicide Squad... Yah! To my left, motions left piloting this MAW-R204 Switzerland Class Hyperspace Prowler is Aeron Jurden. To my right, motions right is the lovely Saetia Cannaly. Behind me, the Ringo Starr of this operation, Parikjacklan Declaux Roos. Fuck you mutters Jack And of course, on vocals, and the man stood, grinning, and swung a Power Axe over his shoulder. It was a classic Gibson 1170 eleven-seventy, popular around a hundred years before lead guitar the grin widening Mr. Darrien "the Undead" Viest. We've come contraterra all the way out here to hold negotiations with you crazy bastards. If you could so kindly not vaporize us and send an escort along to pick us up, we can get down to it! click

Another message, sent across Imperial Common Frequencies

We know you decision makers will be listening to this. This is serious parlay. To be honest, you are too big a pain in the ass to deal with right now, so, lets find something you want, and we won't have to waste a bunch of manpower killing the fuck outta each other. Savvy Mates?

Aegis System
Corona Stars Commonwealth

The retreat is going well, all things considered./Unfortunately, it looks like we're just plinking at their ships.

Most of the Commonwealth ships now sported new decorations: gashes, chunks of hull blown off, melted external surfaces, and some hull breaches. All told, it was very serious damage, especially considering the minimal damage to the opposing fleet. In even the best of cases, losing a third of your force in the opening of a battle was not good. This was hardly an ideal situation.

Still, the fleetmind had a plan. The formation they were retreating in was carefully chosen, designed to spread out the damage over many ships, and leaving none destroyed. So far it had worked, though several ships were close to being disabled. As the Commonwealth fleet retreated, they slowly pulled out of range of the opposing 5th Fleet battleships, the whole point of this maneuver.

The opposing admiral now had a choice to make: would he pursue with his smaller ships, or would he keep his entire fleet together? In either case, the fleetmind had planned for the most likely tactics, and most of them were within acceptable casualty rates.

Reinforcements are coming within the hour, and we've called up even more./Hopefully they get here before we're all dead.

-----
Round 1

313.2 base damage from 5th fleet ships
90D present. Adjusted damage: 290.7 damage
Damage spread out over many ships, no CSC ships destroyed.

184 base damage from CSC ships
x 0.5 because my ships are retreating: 92 damage
350D present. Adjusted damage: 22 damage (attempted targets: Flagellant defense cruisers)

Transmission from Metallkonige Space, directed into the void
Day 4, Week 1, Turn 1

Over the long range broadcast channels, "Hails and greetings Molochi Suicide Squad, we acknowledge your presence here as diplomatic envoys and shall extend to you all courtesies expected. That said, since by law no non-allied outsider may learn of the location of our territory, if you engage your hyperdrives on a vector in any direction we don't like, you shall be considered in violation of Konige sovereign law. While afforded standard diplomatic immunities, you will still not be allowed to simply leave, and any injuries resulting from force used to restrain you shall be considered your fault. If you choose to violate our laws after this warning, know that even in capture you shall not be mistreated, but you will simply not be detained until further negotiations, via long range communications, with your people have been completed to arrange your release.

"Now that all the standard disclaimers are out of the way, let us get to the blood thirsty bit. Simply looking at your ship and a map shows that you must have left your home port before you could have known of the events that occurred at the edges of Internationale space, which I am sure you are now aware of. This means that you were afraid of us before we had an unimpeded shot at your territory. Not a good bargaining position no? The fact that you went to effort of sending only a single diplomatic ship says that you doubt your own military capacity to wage a war out here... at least surrounded as you are by your neighbours.

"But as I'm sure your superiors have informed you, we are quite amenable to bribery, as evidenced by our actions with the Syndicalists. However, now that we have access to the core worlds, the cost of buying us off has increased. Transmitting standard price guide now. These figures are negotiable, but as we are being mercenary about things we will point out that any contracts written with us involve a built in termination clause in the event we get a better deal. If you are scared enough to start paying us off rather than face us directly, we feel you should be informed of this fact as perhaps then you will decide to pay us more than we initially ask for as 'insurance'."

Code: Select all

Metallkonige Tour Date Negotiations: How to keep the party off your planets if you're not Awesome enough to handle it

*200 IP per month plus safe passage buys you a nonaggression pact
*100 IP per month plus 1/4 expenses buys you a redirection of the tour into the location of your choice
*These prices are doubled + surpass previous contracts, minimum, if you wish to outbid a previous arrangement
*Good condition warships will be considered at 150% their price for the purposes of payment, but they will not always be considered viable payment options

This price guide has been brought to you by the Metallkonige Ministry of Bribery, Extortion, Piracy and Mercenary Work.

Aegis System
Corona Stars Commonwealth

Yet another volley washed across the fleet. Shields momentarily overloaded, decoys vaporised, and parasite defense platforms went into momentary shutdown mode, before spinning back up after a system reboot.

While the battleships were attempting to shield their smaller brethren, the process was in no way perfect, simply because space was large, and the incoming fire came from enough sources that there was no way to effectively physically shield them even with 50% more battleship hulls. Even with defensive measures as capable as it was possible to cram into their hulls, they still represented far easier targets to damage in absoute terms than the mammoth battleships, and so suffered permanent degradation of combat capability where the battleships simply needed to recharge their shields while waiting for the next volley to arrive.

Dirty Masochist reports 11% degradation in general combat ability. Which makes it a clean sweep on the cruisers, ranging from seven to fourteen pecent degradation, averaging ten. Apart from Grievous Bodily Harm, currently standing at 95.55% base combat capability, negligible lasting damage to the remainder of the fleet. Have provisionally assigned captain of Grievous Bodily Harm to remedial live-fire dodging school upon return to base. Defensive platform attrition well within projections to maintain sufficient reserve for the campaign barring serious targetting readjustment by Commonwealth forces. Maintain fleet formation, continue current engagement plan, pursue at maximum speed conducive to full offensive capability. You know what you doing.

Following a chorus of groans from the fleet net at the last addition, another massed barrage streaked across the void. First, a swarm of throw-away missiles, liberally seeded with steathed observation platforms. Following immediately on the heels of that, an energy barrage came from the cruisers. With the targets as localised as possible at the current engagement range, the battleships massive spinal cannons roared to life, spitting out prodigous quantities of energy at the now bracketed and pinpointed targets. At least, that was the plan, actual results for each individual volley tended to vary significantly. Still the results were generally acceptable, as the missiles forced targets to defend themselves, rapidly leading to the recon platforms accumulating detailed targetting information, followed by the accumulation of still more attrition to the Commonwealth fleet.

It would be interesting to see if the Commonwealth would bow to the inevitable, and sacrifice their battleships in a bid to let the ships that actually could reasonably escape get clear. Until they made that decision, the Fifth Fleet continued to engage targets of opportunity as they became vulnerable. Tragically, from Tarnok's viewpoint, this led to increased damage to the heavy hulls, since they had no drive power to spare for maunevers if they wanted to have any hope of getting clear and siultaneously maintain formation with the fleet.

OOC:

Yeah, your numbers look good. The Fifth Fleet isn't shooting for anything in particular, just whatever they can get a good lock on. The heavy ships probably taking more damage is mainly a fluff nod to perceived realism, and also seems highly likely given that you haven't suffered any disabled hulls yet with 109 total ships, 290 damage, and fifty system defense hulls that can't really take a hit clogging up that list.

Damage allocation is one point to each Flagellant, and the remainder to one unlucky battleship with a soon to be even unluckier captain.

Aegis System Outskirts
Corona Stars Commonwealth

The Aegis Graveyard, as it is classified currently, begins pouring from hyperspace--gas rushing outwards from glimmering hypernodes as vessels from the Quaros sector glitter in the horizon--and though the cloud is forming some great distance away, even now from the inner planets it swells to a great size in the sky.

"Fleet has arrived--but it looks like we're not here alone. Zounds! We live in interesting times!"

The first ships to appear are the Caretakers, hidden by the effects of their own sensor-suppression technology, swallowing up most of the tracking sensors that ping against them. They pave the way for the expanding gascloud, moving and attending to the crippled Imperial vessels as they begin appearing next, along with great masses of twisted and ruined debris, some pieces in particular that would be recognizable to the CSC as shards of a frigate.

The ruined Battlespheres Everlasting Justice of Our Imperial Might and Unconquerable Light of Sol roll out first, their surfaces spiderwebbed with xenotech weapons emplacements, and the pitted craters of their surface hosting smaller xeno-sphere of their own, like rats in a corpse. The vessels belch reaction mass, and then fall silent, drifting as their weapons pulse towards online. Imperial Cruisers Hand of Terra and Peace of Might appear next, as well as a small civilian freighter whose IFF tags are nearly unreadable. Somewhere deep in the cloud, an Interdiction field of immense strength begins crawling outwards.

The graveyard's Lanterns are next to appear, slowly glowing to luminescene around the sworling vortex of gas that clouds space, dimly lit in purple tones through the blue-green soupy atmosphere of the Anomoly. The whole mass drifts inwards, wobbling against the solar wind, and the screeching of C3 equipment ripples from the center of the cloud in quickly speeding bursts.

Well, that tears it. Bring in the scouting swarm, and set up to shift the fleet formation to focus on the new pains in the ass. On the plus side, now we know who we're going to be hitting next.

From around the far outskirts of the system, twenty escorts engaged in quick jumps, arriving well behind the embattled fleet, but rapidly making up distance with their superior acceleration. To the newcomers, a simple message was broadcast in the clear in all known languages and dialects:

"Piss off and find some other corpses to fuck."

As punctuation, another volley lashed the battered Commenwealth fleet.

OOC: And with that arrival, apart from the rest of Hawkwings' fleet, any further interference should be a minimum of four days out.

Makay Sector
Captain Kaplan and the Dastardly Standoff

Kaplan was not amused as his flotilla maintained an elliptical pursuit orbit. MacPherson continued to relay messages between the ships of the fleet, while updates constantly flashed on the screen.

Sidekick Senior Grade Al-Daim stood stoically by his seat, watching. "Another atomic blast." he dryly commented. "We should detach a cutter for courier. Perhaps we could call for Fourth Fleet..."

Shaking his head, Kaplan looked across to MacPherson. "Audio message to the new contact fleet. Inform them that we're not going to stand by and let atomics be thrown around on that planet's surface! We come of course with peaceful relations, but we cannot stand idle while innocents are no doubt dying by the millions on the surface. End message"

Al-Daim turned to forward more commands, seemingly reading his Captain's mind. His expression remained sharp, features sharp as well as he passed orders. "Signal all ships to maneuver for orbit. Broadcast to the planet that we're moving to assist the civilians, and that the aggressors must stand down."

Nodding, 'King' Kaplan gripped one armrest, eyes closing. "Hrmph. Any fleet that would stand by while civilians come under atomic attack can only be called criminally negligent." he said, watching images and analysis of the local defense cruisers. "Detatch the Cutters for courier to Fourth Fleet along with burst transmission." the Captain ordered, going silent yet glowing with an air of confidence.

Currently we are dealing with a Syndicalist resurgence. Situation is in hand, rebellion is being put down. Nuclear detonations both caused by syndicalist rebels with complete disregard for loss of life in populated areas. Syndicalist rebellion has of yet no major strategic targets requiring orbital bombardment, as a result they cannot be intimidated into backing down. Should such targets present themselves coordinates will be broadcast to both orbiting fleets.Your genereousity is noted in these troubled times.

Citadel 4666
Famagasta
Godwin's Hope
Makay

The assault teams moved in over the smoking corpses of the first few waves. Grenade and mortar-blasts had clensed the courtyard with a rain of scything shrapnel and with the sleeting electronic murder of EE rounds.

With practiced motions, the resistance fighters began the laborious, brutal task of clearing the Citadel. They were presaged by the blasts of grenades and flashbangs. Lancer-squads held strong-points, turning hallways and rooms into charnel-houses. However, most of the rebel power was deployed to Famagasta. Behind every dead soldier, two more lept forwards, firing and shouting in worldess rage against the implacable force which had turned friends and loved ones into delusional puppets of the carnivorous Enemy.

In under four minutes, the first floor had fallen.

Outside, soldiers hastily aimed recoilless rifles at the surviving defense laser silo. In careful co-ordination, four shells were launched at close range, just as the beam pivoted to track an incoming missile.

Image

The PD beam simply couldn't track so many targets on such short trajectories. Smoke and debris sputtered from the fortified beam weapon silo. Locke held his breath- the defense lasers were set in heavily armoured mountings, and the resistance's recoilless were of an old design.

A missile whipped towards one of the upper-level galleries. The defense laser's mounting pivoted smoothly, and bathed the swift projectile in a diffuse glow for a second before shorting in a shower of sparks.

A ragged cheer rose from the onrushing Syndicalist and Nationalist guerillas. The weapon had been thrown terribly out of alignment, it's mirrors and lenses damaged.

Even as the brave suicide squads continued their desperate fight inside the Citadel, units like Locke's prepared breaching mortars. Locke ducked into a crater and covered his ears as the specialists fired their weapons. Grappelliing hooks sailed up to the summit of the Citadel, around the hole where the highest loopholes and firing positions had been prior to the defense laser's destruction and the summary missile bombardment of the Citadel.

"Move! Move!"

Their was a terrible sense of urgency. The revolutionaries had metal helmets and had all undergone Bertrich-Klein conditioning, but already, actions became fuzzy and diffuse under the oppressive waves of the mind-control tower. Locke was in the first wave. He wasted no time hooking his belt-lift to the grapelling line. With smooth, liquid movements, the assault troops began to slide up the lines in a perverse and impossible mockery of gravity, pulled swiftly by the belt-lifts towards the pinnacle of the structure.

Haruhiist dreadnought Hare Hare Yukai
Edge of Humanist Union space (Haruhiist-Union Skirmish Site 1)
Day 2, Week 1, Turn 1

At the same instant the twin Broadswords fell and the New London was eviscerated by the Hare Hare Yukai's dual Mikuru Beams, Fleet Admiral Ito and Commodore Dawson received some more bad news from one of the comms officers. "Admiral, Commodore, we've lost contact with the Bandai and one of the Hiranos," she reported matter-of-factly.

"Motherfucker!" Fleet Admiral Ito cried out in anguish. "Have the Lees take position with the remaining Hiranos and have them shift their offense to the three Stilettos! I'll finish off the New London, then try to take out the remaining Wolves! Also, where in Haruhi's name are my damn reinforcements?!"

As the Lees moved forth to escort the Hiranos to their targets, the Yukai refocused its offensive efforts towards the New London. "The rest of the fleet will be due any moment now," a sensor operator said.

"It'll be an hour at most until we can have both Mikuru Beams recharged," a weapons operator called out.

"We won't be needing them," Commodore Dawson said firmly. "Keep focusing your fire on the battlecruiser and redirect any bleed-off to the destroyers."

"Affirmative," the operator replied before resuming feeding targeting solutions to the gunners. The Yukai pressed the attack on the New London, pouring as many nukes and coilgun rounds as it could spare into what little remained of the hostile ship's superstructure; while the Wolves valiantly tried to shield the Cheetah from the Haruhiist onslaught, it became clear that their efforts were soon going to be for naught. Fleet Admiral Ito paid no heed to Vice Admiral Ferguson's last words; she simply looked on in uncharacteristic silence as the savage assault progressed to its inevitable end.

As the New London withered under the Yukai's might, the nine Lees and three Hiranos marked the three remaining combat-ready Stilettos for destruction. The Stilettos, which had been relatively ignored after the first few exchanges between the Haruhiist and Union task forces, were now receiving the full brunt of the swarms of missiles and slugs being flung through the void by the Lees and Hiranos as they evenly divided their fire between the triad of cruisers.

As Fleet Admiral Ito's force fought on, the rest of the Haruhiist armada was not very far behind; several of the other admirals already knew that the situation had already gone belly-up when the initial scouts were engaged by the rest of the Union task force, but they couldn't do anything about it until Fleet Admiral Ito finally gave the order to advance. Seemingly out of nowhere, forty Lees, sixteen Hiranos, eight KyoAnis, and four Yukais dropped in from hyperspace; with guns blazing and shields shimmering, they leapt upon the remnants of the Union task force, engaging any targets they could find. Even the retreating Radiant Dawn and Sentinel, which were now well beyond effective weapons range, were not spared as bleed-off from the Haruhiist coilgun and nuke barrages reached out through the void to touch them in the only way possible.

Aegis System
Corona Stars Commonwealth

The joy of a close formation pursuit of a drastically inferior foe was that it left a great deal of time for computer analysis, consideration, and debate of options. The lack of joy came in the conclusions inevitably drawn from the available data, no matter which way you looked at it.

Interlopers provisionally assessed at 60% of current total fleet strength by power output +/-15% likely margin of error barring exceptional stealth capabilities. Commonwealth reinforcements immediately inbound provisionally assessed at 20% of current fleet strength +/-50% by detached forces and available sensor data. Theoretically available additional Commonwealth Forces available for eventual intervention assessed at 30% of current fleet strength, +/-100% due to vast number of unknown variables. Remaining Commonwealth forces in-system assessed at 40%, down from initial strength of 55%, projected to fall to 34% before either their reinforcements or new arrivals can potentially intervene. Warning: if allowed to escape, in-system Commonwealth fleet strength projected to repair 30-70% of current damage in short order from past experience campaigning against them. Sensors unable to determine state of potential ftl charging, potentially they can escape within little more than one hour, or it could be as many as three presuming they are not simply playing for time if these new pains in our posterior regions are some kind of Commonwealth allies that intel completely missed.

Vunderbahr. Ve came here on a mad roll of zee dice, so ve shall let it ride, ja? Continue to prosecute engagement of retreating forces. Increase Comm jamming to maximum, if zeese are allies, ve do not vant zem to communicate. Bring Interdictors to full activity, and maintain sensor watch for new arrivals, along with full readiness in off-arc veapons batteries. Maintain formation for now.

Confirmed on all ships. And for the Love of the Lord of Destruction, drop the damned accent.

Now contemptuously shrugging aside the dwindling fire of the battered defenders, the Fifth Fleet continued to charge forward. As best they could they attempted to concentrate fire on the smaller vessels now, but not at the expense of seriously reducing the damage they hungered to inflict. Meanwhile, twenty scattered escorts began their speed runs to join the fleet, their engine flare burning through their quite respectable stealth fields.

OOC:

Note, the reduction for D in the rules is cuurently .25 per point, not .2 as Hawkwings calculated previously for my ships(from the calculation given in the ruleset, it looks like it got overlooked in the last edit). As such, the available D should have stopped 87.5 points instead of the seventy. Because I didn't catch it at the time, and the mechanics of a pursuit like this should make me somewhat more vulnerable, I'm letting the extra damage stand for the first round, but will be applying the full amount for this round and all future ones in the interests of having at least something limp home at the end of the day if the rules aren't changed.
Editted to remove assholery because I felt like a dick.

1544 offensive fleet strength, divided by five, further divided by two for pursuing during a declared retreat. 154 damage-22.5 for 90 D= 131.5 damage accrued to Commonwealth ships. Attempted targets: whatever they think they can kill.

Commonwealth:

629.3 fleet strength, gives 62.93 damage, insufficient to breach my D barring exceptionally stirring writing on Hawkwings part.

Gulf outside Konige Space

A full holo message sprang back across space, centered on the source of the previous transmission. Sitting in a small commons room was Jack, Viest and Saetia, a small collection of data chips, three PT-215 tactical pistols, and the century old Konige trophy. The centrally seated Viest again opened the conversation.

Sorry about wasting the bandwidth, but we got full holo in this thing, and I thought you deserved to see my pretty face, confirm that yes, they sent me out here. You should know who I am. I was pretty famous in the Southeast. I mean I had fucking trading cards of me made. Little Imperial children, in their safe little cities, paid for with blood, passing around cards talking about how many times I had been declared dead by Imperial Logistics Corp-ers.

I can assure you those where fun times bumping my stats too, like Bratlin IV, one of your Ruckers put this power axe in my chest. Would have hurt if I hadn't already been blown to hell so many times. Poor bastard probably didn't like the tactical blade I put in his chest. Viest raised his arm, a foot long blade extending then retracting in to the sleeve But that was war. We're not a bunch of pussies like the Syndicalists to the South. Afraid you'll kill a couple of ships, wage some ground campaigns! Waah! Fucking spineless. You attacked 'em. When you get attacked, you smash their skull, so they don't do it again. Of course, that's not the official Molochi line voice switching sarcastically, eyes rolled and head bobbing with the words We of Moloch deeply regret that the Syndicalist International to the South has been attacked by the Non-Imperial MetalKonige. While we respect the Metalkonige cultures right to free practice of worship, we are saddened that the interesting economic and social experiments of the Syndicalists might have been disturbed.

Isn't PC so fun. One of these days they'll realize Terra is a pile of gravel, and the Imperial Fleet isn't ever coming back to enforce such nicety. Something the military has. You're the most aggressive force in the area, so we are going to have to deal with you sooner or later. And they think not having to fuck around with you is a much better deal than getting hit eventually and then having to try to burn your civilization to the ground. I'd hope you'd agree. Anyway, I am just here with Jack to show we mean business. Saetia is here to negotiate, so if you want to meet, discuss terms of whatever kind of deal you wanna reach, feel free. We'll be parked here for 2 Terran Weeks, at the location encoded with this. Feel free to chat. It's not like we have anything to do.

(sorry for the relatively short post)

“It seems that they’re hailing us, or scanning us! There’s too many of them here. We’re going to need to find some way of discriminating amongst these targets.” One of the little clouds of sparkles flits and disappears into a Lantern, lighting up the weapon platform.

“I suggest we use tactics,” quipped one of the glowing smoketrails affixed to the Peace of Might. “With an enemy force of this overwhelming size, only thinking first will win us the day.”

“Brilliant!”

Bobbing on waves of gravity, the Lanterns swung like funeral bells in the curls of blue smoke, tolling out a hymn of misery, a great symphony of deathknells that echoed throughout the anomalous nebula and brought light and thunder alive deep inside the brewing storm. The hulks of the Imperial fleet crawled forwards amidst a cloud of debris, and shots from the other vessels sped out of the storm, exploding against the enemy’s potent defensive bulwark, achieving against such stalwart resistance. Slowly the Lantern’s lengths swung towards the fleet with a shriek, glowing now with that eerie light.

In that shrieking the inmost soul of human fear and agony clawed hopelessly and insanely at the ebony gates of oblivion. Then came the devastating stroke of lightning which shook the whole nebula, lit from the arched Lanterns and long-dead Imperial vessels, and splintered the darkness that twisted between the anomaly and the forces of the Fifth Fleet. The shrieking is echoed from the center of the yawning space-storm, powerful sensors, but it was the lancing beams of the Lanterns that guided them to their targets of choice. The 5th Fleet’s Flagellant defense cruisers, lit up by the full power of the unknown weapons platforms, take the majority of the fire.

"Sir! Makay Defense forces falling into formation along are flanks, seems we have convayed our message properly"

"Excellant, transmit a secure single to thier lead ship let them know if the BETAC force so much as twitch we're going to be covering them. They may have our support, but thier defense ships are still little more then light Destroyers to most ships currently in service." Eddison responding through his Avatar as inwardly he sighed. It was all way and good to parade the strong flag of friendship in defense of another, but he knew if it came to blows, the Makay forces could easily be overwhlemed, only numbers where on thier side.

Citadel 4666
Battle of Farmagasta
Godwin’s hope
Makay province

The Chamaran’s are pushed back, and further back inside their stronghold. Each stand against the foe claiming a few of their number, dead or wounded left behind to their fate at the hands of the ferocious attackers as the Chamaran squads retreat. Those wounded but still able to fight having no choice but to do so as they’re forced further up into the myriad levels of the citadel’s interior. The assault on the second level costly to the extent that human blood begins pouring down the demolished stairs to the level below, oozing down the scaling ladders in use by the rebels and adding to the pools of blood below. The entire citadel slowly starting to stink like a slaughterhouse as for every shielded and armoured chamaran that falls dozen humans are slain, butchered by lasers, grenades, machineguns and explosive charges. But even that seems not enough considering the odds the defenders face.

“We’ve lost the remaining defence laser citymistress.”
Sachay looks up from her work just as the screen before her displays Code accepted, reactor safety systems shut down, program starting

At the base of the citadel the sun furnace floods steadily with fuel, the artificial star swelling in its containing cradle of magnetism, pulsating with uneven fusion as it’s prepared for the command to overload, the command that would remove every trace of Farmagasta in an instant.

“Got more hostiles on external scanners, they’re scaling the citadel.”
Sachay’s tail flicks slightly as she turns to her aide “Must be after the emitter…set the field to maximum, override the safeties if you have to.” she looks back to the overview screens, claws pressing out against the fingertips of her gloves…

Atop the citadel the hypnotic field emitter starts to thrum slightly, audibly vibrating with the power flowing through it. The mental lullaby sung to the human minds around it turning to a scream, akin to switching tracks from pop to hard rock. The generator’s fluid reservoirs starting to boil after but a few minutes as in the command chamber citymistress Sachay looks at the displays, it’ll probably keep them from the emitter and the top of the citadel for the time being but there’s no telling how long the psytech mechanisms will take this before they burn out.

“Oh and the tiger packs should have suited up by now, have them move to positions on the upper levels.”

N-squared. A simple concept in theory, the true understanding of its meaning and application being one of the cornerstones of true tactical mastery, as opposed to merely taking some ships and throwing them into combat.

What it meant in this case was that while the fire pouring into the Fifth Fleet was heavy, the outgoing fire was 43 % heavier. This was already what most tacticians would consider a bad thing for the smaller force. The situation only became worse when the relative defensive disparity was taken into account, since the Fifth Fleet had nearly three times as much dedicated defense as the unwanted partycrashers. To offset this, something like a sixth of the incoming fire burned through the fleet defenses like they weren't there, as became readily apparent when Self-Abuse began to come apart under the hyper-focused beams in the first minutes of the engagement.

Ah, someone's been studying our force structure. Pity that they didn't also study our deployment patterns, they might have been a worthy foe. Fleet defense plan Use It or Lose It, and teach these meddlers to bring enough guns to the knife fight next time. Battleships only from this point on, it's not like the children don't come out to engage when we're burning their worlds anyway.

The fleet made a minute shift in position, as the cruisers' parasite platforms shifted to actively drawing incoming fire in upon themselves, effectively becoming targeting beacons that blinded the majority of their destroyers to anything behind them.

The Fifth Fleet cheerfully charged forward seemingly uncaring that they were suffering attrition at a rapid rate, as cruisers began exploding despite their protected position. Self-Abuse was first to go, followed by Dirty Masochist, and Spank Me, I'm a Naughty Boy, and finally the confusingly named Vs. Debater, as their ineffective shielding platforms burned in an incandescent halo wreathing the whole fleet. Of course, their lack of care might have had something to do with the even worse effect they were having on the jerks who were delaying them from getting it stuck in planetside.

Highly precise(and now editted to be accurate as well, and editted again to be completely accurate, bugger) damage estimates:
1564 offensive fleet strength
312.8 damage.
125D]=31.25 damage reduction
281.55 damage to Quaros Anomaly forces

Losses:
Four Flagellant cruisers
2 points attrition to fifth Flagellant cruiser
107.5 reduction to D on remaining cruisers, all ten on the damaged job(thbbbbttt!), 6.5 reduction or so to each remaining hull.

remaining relevant force strength:
1564 general fleet weight
202.5 D

New arrivals, not hostile, perhaps friendly or sympathetic to us?

The Commonwealth fleet was dancing at the edge of the Fifth Fleet's effective range. Though there was no real "range" as far the guns or missiles in space, there was a point when the lightspeed lag and sensor delay meant that enemy ships could no longer be targeted effectively. In this time of relative safety, crews started damage control and did what they could to keep their ships from falling apart around them.

Our scouts return, as well./Their links are accepted and welcomed

On the other side of the battle, the two small scout fleets has dropped out of hyperspace and were taking in the situation. The strange cloudborne ships were ignoring them as they escaped from their precarious position between the two foreign fleets. As they ran, they continuously transmitted sensor readings and tactical analyses of the two forces around them, updating the Fleetmind's overall picture of the three-way battle now occuring in the system.

Our fleet strength, combined with that of the new arrivals, is sufficient to overcome the Fifth Fleet forces./And our reinforcements will be arriving any minute now. Let's play.

With the Fifth Fleet temporarily occupied by the strange new arrivals, the Commonwealth fleet regrouped and conducted emergency repairs. With temporary fixes in place, they turned back around and bore down on the encircled aggressors, hoping that it would be enough to destroy them, or at least force them to retreat.

Godwin's Hope

Heady rythmns pulsed through Locke's skull. Bertrich-Klein conditioning of the caliber Locke had recieved was quite basic- it focused on mental pnymonics and simple moral fortification which allowed subjects to resist mind subversion of almost any nature short of direct physical alteration. However, it also required concentration and practice, luxuries which hastily-organized assault troops would not necessarily enjoy.

Locke's platoon broke in five stories from the building's roof. The tiger packs were waiting- some of The Enemy's most frightening soldiers, hideous, armoured things.

The smoke and flare of the confusion grenades which had presaged the rebel entrence was useless against their shielded senses. For a minute, a brutal battle raged around the breach-point. Accurate fire whipped out, slicing men to peices. Locke's lieutenant ducked behind cover for a moment, and spoke in a low, fast voice into his helmet comm.
"Sir! What are your orders? SIR?" Locke's eyes widened in horror as his CO turned to look at him. A thin ribbon of blood trailed out of his nostril, dripping out of the ventilator of his gas mask. Behind his goggles, his eyes were open and staring, empty. With a deliberate motion, the lieutenant placed his sidearm under his own chin and squeezed the trigger.

A red mess of brains and skull ran down the wall behind him. It only took a moment's weakness for the conditioning to fail.

Lee, one of the oldest in the assault team, screamed behind her mask. Locke was in shock, fire impacting the walls above him. He did nothing as she ran around the corner. Instantly, the tiger squad's fire hit her. Impossibly she staggered, smoking, to fall on the floor a few feet away from the vicious Chamarrans.

The charges she'd had gripped in her fists went off. In an instant, she became completely comingled with the nearest of the enemy, as the electronic explosive turned everything for meters around into superheated gas.

On the roof, the hypnotic generator thrummed. However, it was not the focus of the attack. On a pylon suspended on the other side of the Citadel was the base's regional transmitter. It wasn't as powerful as the fatline broadcaster located in a fortified silo, and it's signals could never reach other worlds as the main line could. It was for local communication, a simple radio device for the local security forces.

The engineers Locke's assault was screening had reached the base of the pylon, many stories above the ground.

The security sensors watched as the combat engineers began working with metal-cutters and welding tools. One engineer flopped to the ground, wracked by seizures, and twitched off the edge before any of her cohorts could save her. The dull thud of her body striking the ground was completely lost in the roaring din of combat which had enfolded the once-sleepy town of Famagasta.

NRS Voidsailor, Jump Point Gamma, Ronogho system, Nashtari core space
Day 4, Week 1, Turn 1

"We've reached the jump point, sir. Control has given us clearance to make the jump."

"Acknowledged, Comms," Captain Adams responded. "Conn to Engineering," he continued into a speaker mounted onto his command chair. "Confirm preparedness for hyperspace."

"Conn, Engineering," came the response. "Engine cores are spun up and ready to go on your command."

"Very good. Helm, set course for Malacaster and engage."

"Aye," the helmsman answered. "Engaging jump drives now."

The starfield blurred and warped as the stealth frigate made the transition to hyperspace. It was time to find out just what had happened to the neighboring provinces.

From where he sat atop the highest capstone of Daipyramid 2, the Regional Minister could see the battle unfold in front of him, not literally in any sense of course. But he could almost imagine how it would play out. Two fleets—it seemed—not just one. He hadn’t eyes to see, just a wispy remembrance of form locked in memory since before the Empire of Fortress Terra had come and scoured his world without so much as an invitation to peace talks.

It was bitter to see the same thing happening here, once again. The faces were different though. Incoming fire battered the frontal defensive line, casting shadows deep into the cloud and lighting up the fore in an oddly beautiful display of bluegreen flashes with red interiors, filtered through the murky haze of the anomoly’s nebula. The wounded vessels at the front groaned from the impacts, but they were not the beautiful, clean shapes of his people. They were the bloated hulks of the Empire, thrown to combat in a strange new alliance, and against another force of the Empire—it would seem—one in full force. But it was not the one they had come to fight. The Minister’s ghostly form snapped back to the present.

“Where are the others?” he asked, turning his mind towards the aged General’s confident strumming thoughts, nestled as it was amongst the increasingly bruised form of one of the Imperial ships, known before as the Peace of Might. “The spies, General. Where are they? The ones we chased.”

“Unknown! We’ve damaged their defensive fields… but yet, we cannot get a lock on the scout fleet. There’s too much static for our machinery, and it’s too far for any of us to tell.” The reply came with a crackle, not of static, but of electric frustration.

“These Imperial ships… they’ve got no class! There’s very little dignity to fighting with them, or against them. Minister, I’m not sure what this is, but it seems we have been lured into a devious trap. Clearly, the interlopers were bait—and brought us here to their waiting battle fleet.” He huffed, though he no longer had the throat-flaps to make the sound in earnest. “I do fear we’ve fallen for it.”

This last thought the Minister believed, but whose? The Secretary of Labor alighted on the Minister’s thoughts: “I can see what you’re thinking. Retreat? So soon?” The General was busy focusing on moving his ethereal form to a more useful wreck, and did not bother to comment.

“We stand to lose a great deal of vessels if we stay—and stand to profit little. The first enemy is elsewhere. Perhaps already enroute to our home worlds while we tarry here, playing with a more readily prepared enemy. With our fleets united,” the Minister lobbied, as weapon fire burst through a civilian convoy vessel and scattered the front half of it across fifty square kilometers.

“We would stand a better chance of handing this enemy a through defeat. These are not even roughly good odds. This is just a skirmish. I think it’s time we returned to regroup. I’ll draw some fire here, and disable the fields. Begin opening hyperspace envelopes.”

The cloud’s front was tattered from the back-and-forth fire of the two fleets, shots intended to strike down the hanging grey Lanterns that poured the moaning beams of grim death into the Fifth Fleet’s defensive column. Every volley of fire flows from the stern resistance of the dead, as relics of the Empire’s gloried past swing to the fore and blister at the onrushing fire, returning it with every cannon, and even stranger beams that issue forth from within their wounded, gaping wrecks.

Then, as mysteriously as it began, the fog in space starts to lift, and the storm begins to settle and spread. Hanging in space as it dissipates slowly, the Nebula crackles with angry ribbons of lightning, but the sentient malevolence of it seems to fade as the ghostly forms of the vessels within pull and withdraw from sight, sinking backwards on tethers of invisible gravity, tumbling end over end.

*a special clarification*
As we affirmed in the planning thread, turns are simultaneous. I was waiting for Hawkings to post so I knew what was up and what I should include in my post (I had originally posted something about his absent forces) so this is actually the same turn as the one Consequences' forces attacked me on. As such, I take the damage next turn. I just wanted to make note of that because this time is probably the first dramatic example of what that means. This turn, since he just fired, my forces are pristine. Next turn... not so much.

"Unknown energy surge! Planetary surface." gasped the tactical officer. "And unknown energy signatures in space, forming behind the system defense squadron. We can't localize."

Kaplan stood up in his chair. "I've had enough of this." he slammed his fist along the side of the seat, throwing his hand out. "I'm not going to let this planet descend into chaos! We're going to end this." he declared boldly.

"MacPherson, send a message to the local group. Acknowledge that we understand there is a rebellion going on. Inform them that we're taking up planetary orbit to assist, and have marines standing by." he frowns, then considering.

Al-Daim looked across. "Syndicalists? What would they be doing out here on the frontier?" came the question that cut through the silent bridge.

---

In unison, the BETAC Squadron engaged their Antimatter-drives, launching into a ballistic trajectory for low planetary orbit. Two cutters detached, moving for the outer system as well for hyperspace maneuvers.

Citadel 4666
Battle of Famagasta

“will you stop that ancestor damned singing Mela, or do I have to come over there and whap ya one.” Nera continued berating her packmate over the coms channel, met only by more singing as she and her fellows mowed down another attempt to enter the breach in the citadel, bullets pinging off the plating of their armoured suits. Mela turns to Nera, no expression unreadable behind the visor, pausing singing a moment…and then when she resumes…

-

“How are the Tiger packs holding up?”
“Well minor casualties, they’re holding the breach. Oh and they’re singing now citymistress.”
“Singing what, nyo?”
“The betrayal of house Morn, act three.”
“Put it on speakers then.”
Sachay smiles as the tale from Chamaran history comes from the speakers, albeit with the singers not quite in sync and with a constant undercurrent of gunfire.

“What are we going to do about them though?” Sachay says to the screen where a team of engineers are doing things to the tertiary coms node for the citadel.
“Tigers arent equiped to engage on the outside, enemy have too many guns trained on the citadel for anyone else to last long on the exterior, would be a suicide mission.”
Sachay looks ponderingly at the screen “And the fight at the lower levels?” she asks thoughtfully.
“We’re taking losses citymistress and pulling back, we’re losing the third level now, But we’re inflicting far greater losses on them.”
Sachay frowns thinking of it, The chamaran’s are few in number with only those the motherships could carry escaping the cataclysm, every feline life lost puts them one step closer to extinction.

Deliberation on your offer has concluded. Please proceed on course..
A series of orbital correction numbers came up that would take the BETAC expedition’s orbit over Famagasta.
The citadel here is under heavy attack and due to our forces being tied up elsewhere relief is not soon in coming, proposed landing locations and orbital strike coordinates follow
A handful of groundside coordinates for bombardment and landing and data of all the manouvers/engine burns required to reach groundside at the intended areas follow.
