Belgrade, Balkan Confederacy

Image

It was a busy day for Prime Minister Shady Sirah. He had a rather large mess to clean up and he had to consolidate his power. The High Council as expected sided with him and so did most other people of interest who mattered. Most of the remaining royalists had already been either killed in the fighting or arrested and imprisoned. Things were going better than he expected, and he had even begun to make arrangements for Alexander's funeral. Unfortunately Sofia was devastated by the loss of her father and there was very little Sirah could do to comfort her, but he tried to do his best.

Some even wanted to simply bury the Emperor in a hole and forget about him, but Sirah would hear of no such thing. Alexander may have been a bastard near the end of his life, but he was the Emperor of the Balkan Confederacy and as such he would have the funeral worthy of an Emperor. Those who didn't show the Emperor proper respect soon found themselves targets of the Prime Ministers wrath.

After working hard to settle domestic matters, Sirah turned his attention to foreign business. He had a lot of unanswered mail to go through. First he had to assure the Aegian Axis that the Confederacy is still a member and that what they had achieved together was not ruined by recent events. Shady picked up a diplomatic telegram from the Sultanate, and after carefully reading it, began writing down a response.
From the Egyptian Sultanate to the Balkan Confederacy

Your excellency,

It is with great sadness that His Exalted Majesty the Sultan has learned of the emergency that has recently befallen your nation. With the resolution of this crisis in your favour the Greater Diwan of the Egyptian Sultanate recognizes your government as the legal authority of the Balkan Confederacy by virtue of popular sovereignty.

Since it pains us greatly to see our friends and allies in such dire straits, we politely inquire what help we may provide to alleviate any discomforts the people of the Balkan Confederacy may be experiencing. We further wish you to know that the Caliph of Cairo will pray for your fallen Emperor and all others who perished during the troubles.

May the blessings of Allah be upon you,

Ali Dessaix Pasha,
Wazir al-Istishara of the Sultan of Egypt
From the Balkan Confederacy to the Egyptian Sultanate

My friend,

It is with great joy that I read your words, in these trying times, it brings me and the people of the Confederacy great happiness to know that our great allies still stand by our side and are extending their hand in friendship - once again proving the strength of our friendship and our alliance.

I assure you that the Balkan Confederacy remains your friend and ally, now and for all eternity and I am glad that we can work together on solving any and all problems that may befall us. I thank the mighty Caliph for his prayers and I thank the Sultanate and it's most wise leader for your words of support and friendship in this matter.

It is my hope that we can soon meet face to face and discuss matters of importance, perhaps you would allow me to be your most gracious host? The Confederacy wishes to prove itself worthy of it's allies and it's membership in the Aegian Axis.

May the blessings of Almighty Allah be upon you,

Shady Sirah,
Prime Minister of the Balkan Confederacy
A note to the Sultanate was written, soon followed by a note to the Byzantine Empire.
From the Balkan Confederacy to the Byzantine Empire

Your excellency,

It is with mixed feelings that I inform you of the resolution of recent events, the Confederacy was divided, but once again it stands united and strong. It is our greatest hope that you will continue to stand with us in these trying times. The Confederacy wishes to assure you that we remain a loyal ally and member of the Aegian Axis.

Even more so, we remain your friends and hope that the recent problems will not have bad consequences for our friendship. We wish to propose a meeting like the one in which our great alliance was formed, and we wish to be your most gracious hosts so that we can hopefully make up for the problems that recent events caused and once again reaffirm our great alliance and our even greater friendship.

With Respect,

Shady Sirah,
Prime Minister of the Balkan Confederacy
Now for the Germans, a telegram and an answer had to be sent to them as well.
From the German Empire to the Byzantine Empire, the Egyptian Sultanate, the Southeast Asian Union, The Kingdom of Siam, The Cascadian Republic, the French Republic, Sudan, the British Empire, the Balkan Confederacy and the Tuscan Kingdom.

Your Imperial and Royal Majesties,
your Excellencies.

The German Empire is concerned about possible attempts to mine the Gulf of Aden and would like to humbly suggest a mutual exchange of information as well as a coordination of efforts to prevent any such damaging act to our economy.

The German Empire welcomes any suggestion or opinion on the matter.

Signed,
Sänger, Reichskanzler
From the Balkan Confederacy to the German Empire

Your excellency,

It is my hope to find you in good health. It is my wish to reassure the German Empire that all treaties they signed with the Balkan Confederacy remain valid with the new government, as always we remain a friend to the German people. And although our nation has just passed a turbulent period, we still wish to uphold to our responsibilities to the world and our neighbors.

As such the matter of the Gulf of Aden concerns us greatly, as it is a serious problem that threatens to disrupt our trade routes as well. The Confederacy agrees to the sharing of information and wishes to cooperate with the German Empire in the resolution of this problem.

The Confederacy wishes to inform you that we are contemplating sending additional ships to the area to help protect our trade routs and shipping and as well to discourage and prevent any attempt at mining the area.

With respect,

Shady Sirah,
Prime Minister of the Balkan Confederacy
With that done, Sirah decided to rest for a while. He still had a lot of things to take care of and it seemed he would be quite busy from now on. But he didn't mind, such was the burden of those in power.

Altdorf Times

Germany launches diplomatic offensive against the Grand Dominion

REICHSKANZLER Sänger is doing his best to gather a coalition against the Grand Dominion of the Indies, the Altdorf Times has learned. The German government has issued diplomatic letters to several nations in order to “coordinate efforts” against the Grand Dominion. At the heart of the matter are German accusations that the Grand Dominion is actively planning on mining the Gulf of Aden and endangering shipping lanes.

“Unfortunately, it appears that Sänger has decided to distort the truth, why I don't know.” Said Foreign Minister Vladimir Berman in an interview with the Altdorf-Dusseldorf Wire Service. “To say that the Grand Dominion is planning on mining the Gulf of Aden is a half truth. The Grand Dominion was engaged in a minelaying, and minesweeping!, exercise that is applicable in several theaters, not just the Gulf of Aden. I am saying now, it is the position of the Grand Dominion to not mine or threaten the shipping lanes of the Suez Canal unless a European power goes to war with us, and we are unable to convince the Egyptians to ban the transit of belligerent vessels through the Suez Canal by diplomatic means. This does not mean that we will cease military exercises within our own territory because the Overlord of Europe is angry that we are not one of his lapdogs. And the Palk Strait are Dominion territorial waters by any stretch of the imagination.”
"The rifle itself has no moral stature, since it has no will of its own. Naturally, it may be used by evil men for evil purposes, but there are more good men than evil, and while the latter cannot be persuaded to the path of righteousness by propaganda, they can certainly be corrected by good men with rifles."

"So he's really done it", Sänger remarked as he put the telegram aside. "The sin of regicide.", von Westarp said with a shudder in his voice, which caused the leader of the dutch socialists to smirk. As always, the leaders of all parties were gathered at the Reichskanzlei to discuss the affairs of state. Sänger had promised each of them a weekly meeting during the campaign and this was one of those. The atmosphere was relaxed, with the leaders sitting around the grand table in Sänger's recreation room. The dark, wooden walls were framed with the medals he had gathered throughout his life and the pictures of those politicians Sänger admired most - von Stein, Hardenberg, Metternich, Bismarck, von Baden, von Holstein, Augustus, Marc Aurel, Aurelian, Diocletian, Wallenstein and Karl V. A recent new addition had been the portrait of Johann Heinrich Burchard.

Hugenberg, Sänger's opponent in the recent election and the one person Sänger hated the most of all those sitting around the table, however had other things than art on his mind. "When will you give the order, Herr Kanzler?" Sänger frowned. "What order?" "The order for the Generalmobilmachung. We have to avenge the murder of a divine ruler." The Reichskanzler barely stopped himself from rolling his eyes. "Alright, Herr Hugenberg. Let us say we somehow manage to prevail against the Balkan forces. And the Byzantines. And the Egyptians. Let us also presume we will somehow manage to not have our economy collapse from the lack of goods coming through the Suez. What then? What will we have gained?"

Hugenberg's face started to become red. "We shall have avenged the sacrilege of regicide." Seeing that Sänger was close to exploding, Burchard intervened. "A noble goal, Herr Hugenberg. But what will we have gained? A ruined territory? And why should we expend German blood for the Balkan when we need them?"

Before Hugenberg could respond, Sänger had collected himself. "No. Alexander was clearly mad - and Sirah, by all accounts is not. In fact, he has promised to keep all treaties, something we could not be sure with Alexander. No, we shall recognize his government. Better a regiciding and sane politician than a legitimate madman."

The issue was settled.
From the German Empire to the Balkan Confederacy

Your Excellency Sirah,

Though His Imperial Majesty, Kaiser Wilhem II., von Gottes Gnaden Deutscher Kaiser, König von Preußen, Reichsverweser von Österreich und Ungarn etc., cannot condone the circumstances of your ascent and is especially saddened by the death of his Imperial brother, His Imperial Majesty is reassured of your benevolence by the clear gesture of friendship.

The German Empire recognizes your Government in recognition of your commitment to peace and honor, as evidenced by your recognition of all treaties signed during the reign of the late Monarch. We hope the situation in your country will normalize as quickly as possible and pledge to not interfere with your internal politics in any way.

The German Empire thanks you for your most reasonable reply to the request for the sharing of information and views it as a promising start to a mutually beneficiary future.

With the best wishes for the future of your country and yourself,
Sänger, Reichskanzler

Reichskanzler Sänger responds to Dominion slander

In a debate in the Reichstag today, Reichskanzler Dr. mult Johannes Sänger answered many of the charges made in the Dominion press. The Reichskanzler was adamant in his defence of his actions and produced documents disproving all of the charges made by the the Dominion Foreign Minister. Reichskanzler Sänger did not only say that the German Empire never accused the Dominion of planning such a mining operation, but merely noted its concern about the recent expansion of minelaying capabilities of the Dominion Navy. He also noted that the German Empire had formed an exchange of information with most of the nations bordering the Indian Ocean territories. "The Suez canal is vital to our economy and all nations using it shall have the same information to prevent any threat to the canal."

The Reichskanzler also dismissed the charges of forming a coalition against the Dominion or planning a war. In fact, by showing the dispositions of the Imperial Navy, the Reichskanzler was able to prove that any such charge is pure fantasy. In the debate, the Reichskanzler said: "Did the German Empire reinforce the battleships stationed there? No. Did we transfer any marine brigades or troop transports? No. Did the Empire relocate more airplanes? More U-Boote? The answer to those questions, Ladies and Gentlemen, is a resounding No."

When asked what the reasons for the Dominion outcry were, the Reichskanzler refused to speculate. "There might be those among us who might suggest Lord Fairfax is deliberately trumping up the actions to get his parliament to fund more battleships. There might also be those among us who suggest that the Dominion is in fact trying to recover from their resounding diplomatic defeats in the last year. I shall refuse to take part in any such speculation."

The Reichskanzler further added that with the recent information exchange network being put in place and the official guarantee of the Dominion not to mine the Gulf of Aden, the German Empire had achieved its objective. Dr. Sänger went on to give a pledge of the German Empire as well: "For as long as it is the policy of the Dominion not to mine the Gulf of Aden or to impair Germany's trade routes to the East Asian territories, Germany itself promises not to station a greater number of warships in the Indian Ocean than the Grand Dominion itself has."

The Reichskanzler refused to answer the insults leveled at him in the Grand Dominion press, merely stating that "it is beneath the dignity of any state official to stoop to the level of answering insult with insult."

Reichskanzlei, October 16th, 1926

The sound of voices outside the door jolted Sänger awake. He had taken a little nap during the midday, feeling exhausted from yesterday's chamber negotiations for the new Naval Bill. The voices were undoubtedly that of his wife, his secretary Elise and his valet/bodyguard Hans. "Good morning, Elise, Hans. Is my husband in?" The question was pure politeness - of course, Natasha knew that he was in. However, by following the familiar ritual she showed respect to their domain, so to speak. "Your husband, Countess? I am afraid that he has gone and evolved into a higher being."

The banter was light-hearted, as always, as Natasha feigned shock. "My apologies, Hans. I was unaware that he had chosen to do that. Where is he?" "Gone, Mylady. His place has been taken by the Overlord of Europe." The deadpan delivery by Hans was enough to send Elise into fits of laughter.

Sänger himself felt his spirits lifted by the casual banter outside. He was half-tempted to step out as in the Dominion caricature of himself and declare that everybody kneel before him or face his wrath, but stopped himself. After all, he would look rather foolish doing so and Elise's sides probably hurt enough from laughing. So he rather sat up and pretended to be working.

Eventually, his wife entered, a smile on her face. After hugging each other, Sänger asked what brought her here. "I have found us a house." Sänger's left eyebrow rose. "Already?" "Yes." Reaching into her purse, she produced a letter from her agent and handed it to her husband.

While Sänger looked over the letter, she proceeded to tell him all about the house. "It is a lovely countryhouse, with a large swath of lands including some forests. A marvelous area for riding and the house is large enough for all our purposes." Sänger nodded. Then his eyes looked at the price. It was high. Very high, in fact. As if she had read his minds, Natasha continued. "I also talked to my father. He is willing to provide the money."

Sänger looked up and smiled gratefully at her wife. He would have hated to go and beg an aristocrat for money. He reached over and kissed her hand. "Thank you." After he had finished the letter, he nodded at her. "Very well. When shall we go and take a look?" The House is currently empty, so we can go and take a look whenever we want to." Sänger nodded. "In eight days then? The debate about the new Naval bill will then be over."

First debate about Naval Law finished

Today, the first debate about the 1926 Naval Law came to a close when the extraordinary expenses were funded.

Subject of much debate was the immense amount of money set aside to replace all turrets on the battleships of the Einheit and L20alpha as well as the Ziethen class battlecruisers. The turrets about to be replaced are going to be used in coastal defence batteries for the remainder of their barrel life. In the debate, much criticism was levelled against Krupp and other arms manufacturers. "What good are turrets that need replacing after 4 years?" was a familiar critique heard in the Reichstag today. The Navy refused to answer what precisely was wrong with the turrets, except noting that the flaw had been fixed in the new Bismarck class before she received her turrets.

The Reichstag also funded the continuation of the joint coastal shipping initiative with France, despite criticism that so far it had not had a positive impact on the economy of both states.

The operating costs of the Navy were also funded today, with several members calling on the Reichskanzler to end the cost-intensive training/maneuver program with the French Republic as well as the deployment in the Indian Ocean.

Dutch play gains notoriety
The Dutch play "Our Kaiser" has gained a massive following, having opened in nearly all major dutch cities. The play ridicules his Majesty the Kaiser and the Reichskanzler, depicting the former as a bumbling baffoon and the latter as a weakling who is dominated by his self-loathing for having married an aristocrat. There was no response by the Chancellery or the Hof. A sequel, "Overlord of Europe", is currently planned.
Sänger put aside the newspaper and rubbed his eyes. The debate had taken almost all out of him. But the latest headline made him smirk. Some members of the Reichstag had insisted on action being taken against the play. But Sänger had other plans. As long as they laugh about us, they don't hate us. Instead, inspiration struck him. "Elise. Please book enough seats for my wife and the staff. We are going to watch a play in a few weeks."

Oktober 14th, 1926
Outside Berlin

It was dark when the party composed of the Count, the Countess and the Reichskanzler arrived at the house. Or rather the villa. For though it was dark, the house itself was perfectly illuminated by strategically placed lights.
Image
The debate in the Reichstag had run longer than he had anticipated and the fallout tomorrow would demand his entire attention, so they had to visit it now. The villa itself was lovely and of - for Sänger - enormous size. The location was superb - only one hour drive into Berlin.

Puzzling to Sänger was the question why somebody would want to sell it and the surrounding land now. Berlin was scheduled to expand again next year and the villa was just outside Berlin. Some of the enormous mass of land that belonged to the villa was scheduled to become plots for the urban expansion, something that was guaranteed to multiply the value more than tenfold (while still leaving enough to call it a massive estate). In short, anybody selling now would either be in no need for the Villa, in desperate straits or completely insane. Possibly a combination of all three elements, Sänger mused.

Natasha had not exaggerated. The Villa had a beautiful lake behind it, with ample forests for hunting. Those forests also shielded the Villa from the land used for farming. Even more practicable were the two servant/guests buildings. Roughly the same size of the Villa, they were spaced out at a fair distance and not illuminated now. However Sänger had seen the plans and knew they existed. He had actually preferred such an arrangement - it would give him much needed privacy and prevent overcrowding of the Villa while also allowing for a good number of servants.

As the agent continued extolling the virtues of the Villa, Sänger once more wondered what on earth could cause anybody to sell this house and the land around it. After they had finished the tour - the rooms were in good condition and would need little renovating - the Reichskanzler looked upon the crest on top of the manor entrance. It was smudged with dirt and the dark made it hard to see, yet it was easily recognizable for anybody who saw it every day.
Image
And suddenly it became all clear. This must be Wilhelm's way of saying thanks. The Emperor's pride would forbid him from making a direct bestowal on his Chancellor, but this would be a discreet way to say thank you.

Even more, as Natasha was going to buy the house in her own name, it neatly sidestepped the issue of hanseatic tradition. Still, standing in the entrance, Sänger fought with himself. He was strongly tempted to go back to the Kaiser and throw the deed in his face. But he also knew that he had no legal grounds to do so, as it was not strictly his property in the first place. And it is such a nice house.

The decision was made for him when Natasha linked her left arm with his right and sighed contently. This would be where they would live.

Naval Law passed
With the votes of the Liberals, the National Liberals, the Conservatives, the Centrum and parts of the SPD, the 1926 Naval Law was passed. This bill will regulate the amount of money that is at the discretion of the Chancellery for the following two years. The amounts described in the bill are maximum limits and the Chancellery has not yet made a comment on whether they will ask for the full amount of ships provided for in the bill.

The total bill allows for the construction of up to four battleships and up to four battlecruisers. An equal amount of Battlecruisers is also provided for. Also provided for are the construction of 42 cruisers and up to four aircraft carriers. The Chancellery is also empowered to further expand shipyards and order light units and submarines as needed.

In a first statement, Reichskanzler Sänger said that he would not ask for the total of eight capital units and limit the construction of cruisers to light cruisers and scout cruisers unless the threat situation would change. The new Utrecht class design, a modified Hamburg-class, would most likely be selected as the mainstay.

The Naval law is a first in German history as it does not provide for the construction of a fixed number of units, but instead allows the Chancellery and the various Ämter to determine the amount of construction.

Reichskanzler Sängered honoured by German shipping and shipyard companies

Reichskanzler Sänger has been named Man of the Year by both the German shipping and shipyard companies. In a joint statement, they praised the chancellor for "steadfastly defending German commerce against pirates" and for preventing both a loss of jobs and bankruptcy in the dutch shipyards. The Reichskanzler declined to speak at the event, but released a statement that German commerce protection was the utmost goal of his administration.

Results:
- Germany recognizes the Balkan confederacy
- Sänger defends himself against "Dominion slander"
- Sänger makes pledge that Germany will not station more ships in the IO than the Dominion Navy
- Naval law of 1926 is passed
- A house is purchased
- major refit of all battleships having 16.5" and 16"/50 guns announced. Refit will be extremely costly (a total of 402 IBPs) and will be finished by Q3 1927. At the end of Q4 1926, 2 Ziethen class BC and 2 Österreich class BBs will have finished refitting, rest wil be refitted during Q1/2 1927.

New Government calls for Referendum in Baja

The new Centrist-Conservative government of His Imperial Majesty has issued a call for a referendum to be held in the Baja Province of California. In a briefly worded statement issued to the government of that nation Mexico gave notice that the recent attempts to foist the burden of running the state upon the Bajanos while denying them sufficient weight in direction of the national legislature had violated the basic rights of the Bajanos. The Government has called for a popular referendum to allow the people of the peninsula to chose their own future.

Mexican-Californian tensions prompt response from Vice President Cadbury

This paper has learned that the recent Mexican statement calling for a referendum on the status of Baja, a region of the Republic of California that is majority Mexican, has led to a response from the Vice President on behalf of President Garrett, currently on his trip through Europe. "It is the position of the Cascadian nation that the affairs of the Californian republic should be kept internal to that state. Mexican concern for the Bajanos is understandable but must remain respectful to California's sovereignty. Cascadia urges Mexico to behave according to the principles of civilized states towards one another and to allow the people of California to handle the issue of their tax system and need for income."

Sources close to the State Department indicate that loans to the Californians to cover budget shortfalls are being considered but are not yet confirmed. California has recently been denied a loan from private banks on the grounds of its growing insolvency and the issue of debts of the old defunct Duchy that was overthrown ten years ago....

Count Von Schenk leaned against the window that granted him an excellent view over the downtown area of Cairo. A tumble of houses rolled up against distant hills atop of which squatted the Saladin Fortress, the headquarters of the government of the Sultanate. Somewhere beneath him in the garden of the spacious villa his wife was sunbathing in clothing entirely unbefitting that of a dignitary of the Sultanate. With some effort he diverted his attention from the rather attractive sight.

Image

"So, what do you want me to do, again?"

The Arabic man opposite him smiled entirely too amicably. "I would imagine it is obvious, Sir Count." The man's smile widened as he looked down through the same window. The assassin didn't say anything more, but his message was quite obvious to the Count. "We'd like you to return to Germany."

Von Schenk briefly closed his eyes. "In order to do what?" He knew what was coming before the Arabic man opened his mouth again. Siegfried von Schenk had been given quite the break in that Sheik Helali had been forced to back off the industrial war between their two consortiums -- now it was time to repay the favour.

"In order to find out what the Europeans want, of course." The Arabic man smiled, but it didn't look like he meant it. "They seem eager to confront the Dominion, after all."

"Your masters are mistaken. They are not eager to do so. They wish to avert trouble. Even now they attempt to avoid war."

The assassin shrugged. "Even so. You are now free to return to Germany, yes?"

Von Schenk knitted his brow. "Yes."

"Then you can contact your peers in Germany. Find out what the Germans want, and report back to us. Surely the hospitality shown to you by the Sultan is worthy this?"

Siegfried von Schenk knew there was no real space to disagree with the man who had confronted him in the small eatery off Muiz Street. If the Sultan himself wanted something done, it was just simply easier to do it rather than to complain. Not only was it healthier for oneself, but also for one's companions. "Fine." he growled. "I'll head for Europe and see what they're up to in the hold homestead." He turned away from the window back toward the man who had confronted him, only to find out the man was gone. Even so Von Schenk knew better than to simply discard the encounter as a random chat.

Later that evening, when he and his wife were alone in their Cairo villa, he scraped his throat. "I think we ought to go and visit Germany," he said.

Airplane engines idled on Afghani airfields.

"General, where do you wish us to bomb?"

"Peshawar. Bomb all military installations. Use those plague-boxes the NKAI sent us and drop those in the civilian areas."

"Yessir!"

The engines roared into life as they soared toward the Shepi city of Peshawar.

From the German Empire to the Grand Dominion of the Indies

Lord Fairfax,

in order to clarify and hopefully dispel the rumors being floated in the press of our respective nations, the German Empire would like to clarify its position thusly:

1. The German Empire realizes the naval situation leaves the Grand Dominion little choice but to resort to minelaying, its Navy being much depleted from the devastating loss against Shepistan.

2. The German Empire does not begrudge the Dominion the right to use mines in any territorial water in whatever capacity they see fit

3. The German Empire will not interfere if the Dominion mines the Gulf of Oman to cut off access to and from Shepistan for it views that as a matter of the usual warfare between the Grand Dominion and Shepistan. The same shall apply should Shepistan decide to mine Dominion waters.

4. In the unlikely event of a German ship, while traveling under convoy escort in Dominion waters, should fall prey to such a minefield, Germany will not view this as a casus belli but as a regrettable accident.

5. Germany will demand compensation if the location of the minefield was not known to the German Navy or if the mines drifted off course.

6. However, it is more likely that in the event of announced widespread mining, German shipping to that area will cease entirely.

The German Empire hopes that this is sufficient to clarify the official German position and prevents further rumors in the Dominion press.

Signed,
Sänger, Reichskanzler

Le Monde

Fortifications Nearing Completion: Fortifications at Calais and along the Channel coast, build in cooperation between German and French engineers and workers, are expected to finish construction sometime soon; German Colonel of Engineers Heinrich Stein has stated that further orders of building material will not take place. Le Monde was unable to reach French officials for comment, but wishes to congratulate all participants in this grand cooperative undertaking.

Republican Marine Corps To Take Delivery of Landing Craft: The 1925 Landing Craft Project has finally born fruit, in the form of enough landing craft for nearly the entire Corps. The landing craft, which carry a platoon each, are elegantly simple in design, and have proven extremely effective in exercises conducted between Marine units and with elements of the German Army. With these landing craft present in large numbers, the deployment of Marine units to troubled areas, near or far, will be made much easier.

Navy commissions two new Blücher class cruisers
The German Navy today commissioned two new Kanitz class cruisers. The cruisers, which are an updated version of the true-and tested Blücher class, are expected to join the Hochseeflotte. The two cruisers are named SMS Kanitz and SMS Lacy, after the two Austrian Generals of the same names. They replace the cruisers of the same name sold to Chiletina.
Image

Each of the cruisers has a top speed of 32 knots, displaces roughly 18.000 tons and is armed with 8 8"/60 guns. They will be the last cruisers built to this design.

Navy considers new anti-aircraft cruiser
In the wake of the increase of torpedo-aircraft anywhere, the department of the Navy has announced it is considering building an anti-aircraft cruiser to protect the carriers from aircraft attack. Such a cruiser would have to reach at least speeds of 32 knots in order to be of any value to the Carriers.

New contracts signed
The Marineamt announced today the signing of the first new capital ship orders under the 1926 Naval Law. Come January, the shipyards of Germaniawerft, Kiel and Blohm&Voss, Hamburg, will start building one new battlecruiser each. It is estimated that the new slipways currently being built by both companies will be used to construct the ships.

SMS Markgraf
Flagship of the German Indian Ocean fleet

Admiral Souchon, Commander in Chief of the Indian Ocean Fleet, was in a foul mood. He had before him an almost impossible task - safeguard the convoy routes and also prevent the Gulf of Aden from being mined. To top it off, Berlin had refused to grant him the two new cruisers for the purpose of deescalation.

In Souchon's mind, this deescalation policy was a pipe dream. To him, it seemed as if the Dominion was testing the limits of how much they could get away with before the HSF would appear and sent a message the hard way. If it had been up to him, the Battlecruisers would have delivered that message back then when the pirates had first acted up. But of course, those idealistic dreamers in Berlin did not view it the same way.

As a consequence the balance of power would shift even more to the Dominion, which was happily building battleship after battleship. Meanwhile, his forces had been depleted in the name of deescalation even more a few months ago when the German East Asia and Pacific squadrons had been detached from his command once more. And he was supposed to keep the Gulf of Aden mine free with little more than four battleships as his reserve. Yes, the new 16.5" guns at Berbera would help - but they had not arrived yet because the ships they were pulled from had not entered the refit stage. And coastal guns were a pretty lousy method to catch small minelayers.

To Souchon, it was clear the the entire Indian Ocean command was just a disaster waiting to happen. It was supposed to be only a temporary command anyway, but it looked as if that too had been a very optimistic assessment.

Hopefully, the new information exchange would help him in the task.

Amsterdam, November 3rd 1926

Sänger and the staff of the Reichskanzlei had caused quite a stir in the auditorium when they had taken their seats in the theater. Thankfully, as far as he could interpret the looks they received, they were more bemused or puzzled than filled with outright hate. However, he was definitely glad that Natasha had declined to come, because he did not think she would like how she was portrayed in the play.

Besides, Natasha was busy with decorating the house anyway. The contract had been signed by her and notarized a week ago and both she and Sänger had then engaged some interior designers. His own demands on the house had been quite simple - a large library, a large home office and that had been it. Neither of the two rooms had posed much of a challenge to the designers and he had heartily approved the plans presented to him. However Natasha had decided to change every other room in the house according to her wishes. Therefore, she spent the last days doing nothing but meeting with designers, artists and craftsmen. Initially Sänger had accompanied her, but he had soon discovered his wife had already formulated quite intricate plans of how the house was supposed to look. As he trusted her taste (even when it came to art deco) there had been little for him to do but nod and say "Yes, dear."

He noticed that having to wait for him to finish state business before each meeting with the designers was both a waste of time and unnerving to all concerned, so they had decided that she would take charge of the matter. In any way, he was glad she was that happy with the house.

The sound of the curtains being drawn open interrupted him from his musings and soon the first act started. If the dutch actors were disturbed by him watching them making fun of the whole German government, then they did not show it.
Image
As the Imitation of the Kaiser started to sing, he actually had to smile. Because even though he hardly understood the words, the body language spoke enough. And in a way, they did capture the essence of the Kaiser. The play took quite the humorous view on the invasion of the Low countries, showing the Kaiser throwing a dart at France and missing.

The Kaiserliche Marine fared hardly better in the play, being shown as bumbling fools who could not hit another actor disguised as a giant mosquito with "Pirates".
Image
The mosquito proceeded to sting the German ship captain until he declared he needed a victory and cried out: "Take the dutch. Take the Dutch."

Image
The play then turned to the Reichskanzlei. While Sänger was laughing at the sight of the pair that undoubtedly was supposed to portray him and Natasha - and the actress did resemble her a bit - he was very glad Natasha did not come. For the play portrayed him as a drunkard who was in love with a harpy who shouted "Crush the communists. Crush the communists." Eventually, the "Reichskanzler" gave in.

Image
The next act showed the German "Michel", the embodiment of the ordinary German, getting enraged at the dutch due to them not eating enough Sauerbraten.

Eventually, the finale showed "the Countess" dressed as a cabaret showgirl, leading the black-clad sturmtruppen in a song and dance number, which featured heavily the famous goose-step of the Gardekorps.
Image
"Springtime for Wilhelm and Germany
Winter for Dutch and Belgians
Springtime for Wilhelm and Germany....
Watch out, Europe
We're going on tour.
Springtime for Wilhelm and Germany
Goose-step's the new step today
Bombs falling from the skies again
Prussia is on the rise again
Springtime for Wilhelm and Germany
U-boats are sailing once more
Springtime for Wilhelm and Germany
Means that...
Soon we'll be going...
We've got to be going...
You know we'll be going....
You bet we'll be going...
You know we'll be going to war"

Sänger knew he would be catching some flak from the conservatives for laughing hard at the final tableau, but he really couldn't help himself.

Later
Outside the theater

Those members of the dutch resistance that could be mobilized quickly had gathered after hearing that the arch enemy was in town. Dressed in stolen German uniforms, the two most brave of them gathered near the street with submachine guns. The plan was to hose down the Reichskanzler's car with automatic fire once he passed them.

To their shock, the Reichskanzler was not traveling per car, but on foot. And even worse, he was surrounded by a number of civilians - mostly women, the secretaries of the Reichskanzlei, that made a clear shot impossible. And the numbers of onlookers had increased greatly as well, with a great number of journalists buzzing around the Reichskanzler. This made shooting him from the distance impossible. After looking at each other, they nodded and started to etch closer.

Over the crowd, Thomas de Vries could hear one of the Journalists ask the Reichskanzler about the play. He strained his ears to hear the reply as he and his fellow resistance member Marteen tried to get closer. "I enjoyed it very much. The actors did a fine job, although of course it is satire." Suddenly, Thomas heard a very familiar laughter. He strained his neck and sure enough, there was his sister, joking with another girl from Sänger's entourage.

Hearing his sister laugh did nothing but fuel the fury. He had almost reached the chancellor when his instinct told him to stop. Being a trained (former) dutch marine, he immediately surveyed his surroundings. Looking at the Chancellor's entourage, he noticed the burly-built man to the right of the chancellor reaching inside his coat.

There was no need to guess what he was reaching for. Thomas briefly considered his options. He could shoot into the crowd, hoping to get the chancellor. But that would most likely result in nothing but civilian casualties - there was still a ring of bodies between him and the Kanzler. So he veered away to the right. As he did so, he the bodyguard briefly made eye contact, both knowing they would not forget this event.

After letting the entourage pass, Thomas noticed that his friend Mareen had also not succeded. Quickly discarding the uniforms, the two slipped away into the night.

Train station

Inside the special train, Hans finally relaxed the grip on his pistol. Sänger had not noticed a thing, but Hans was almost sure that they had just barely escaped an assassination attempt. There was no proof of course. Sitting down into a seat opposite the chancellor, he reviewed what had just happened. He had noticed the two soldiers early on. German soldiers were no strange sight in the new Kingdom of the Netherlands, but as a former Army man himself he noticed that there definitely was something strange about those two particular soldiers.

But maybe he was just seeing ghosts. Maybe they were two people who had decided to play extra escort for the chancellor in the hopes of promotion. After more consideration, he decided not to worry the chancellor. There was no proof after all and this occasion was not so different from the dozen others in which he had tensed up only to happen nothing.

Still, even if he would not tell the chancellor, he would scan the crowds from now on for the face of that particular man. Of course, the chances of them ever meeting again was slim to none.

Results:
- Sänger visits a play
- Dutch resistance nearly succeeds in assassinating him

Also, apologies to The Producers.

That day, a handwritten letter was delivered to the residency of the German chancellor. The postage stamps, the return address, and minute traces of sand indicated it had come all the way from Egypt. Inside the envelope was a brief message written on expensive and perfumed paper. The author's slightly slanted handwriting looked neat, even though minute hesitations in some of the loops and joins would tell a penmanship expert that he had probably not written regular letters in German in some time. Nonetheless the manuscript was easily readable.
Mein Kanzler,

I hope this letter finds you and your wife in good health. I write to you today to inform you that my wife and I intend to visit the Reich from mid to late December this year. I was hoping that at some point during our visit I might impose upon your time to speak privately with you, as one German to another.

Our itinerary as it currently stands is thus: we shall be arriving in Venice on the 10th of December and will be travelling to my family estates near Ortelsburg in Ostpreußen. Both on the way there and on our way back will we be visiting Berlin; we expect to be spending the remainder of December on German soil, before returning to Egypt by way of France.

I look forward to hearing from you on this matter.

Portland, Federal District
18 August 1926

For the first time in two months, the Presidential Residence in Portland was again inhabited fully. A small motorcade busied itself bringing the belongings of the President and his family to their rooms, Rachel taking charge as would be expected while Stephen went to a Cabinet meeting.
The tour had been a success from his view. After his warm welcome in Florence they had traveled on to Madrid, where Queen Marian had been a gracious host. Discussions with Spain had been of an economic character, given they no longer possessed much in the way of Pacific holdings, and at the Spanish state banquet he had been given the chance to personally congratulate the ambassadors from Mexico and Colombia on their peace treaty's ratification.
Paris had been entertaining as well, the sights marvelous and the state discussions blissfully short. As with Germany an exchange of honors had been arranged and was settled in a private ceremony. The children had been especially curious in the sights of Paris, particularly from the Eiffel Tower.
Then they had gone to London. The reception there was equally warm, Prime Minister Lloyd-George personally dealing with him most of the time. The London crowds had been friendly yet there had been a bit of tension, he had felt then. It was well known by then what favor he held in Germany and the British people were, as they had been for a quarter century, deeply concerned with the plans of the German Empire. He had insisted, when asked, that the Germans as he knew them were a people who wanted peace with Britain and that misunderstandings and apprehensions should not be permitted to destroy the peace that existed.

Behind closed doors, the British Government, led by Lloyd-George and Churchill, had made their desire for the future of the Anglo-Cascadian relationship. The British Empire, he was reminded, had sponsored the independence of Cascadia, had given it the means to consolidate northern California against Mexico, and had given it Australia once it was clear the overstretched Empire could not hold it against the labor unrest and other issues of that continent. Surely Britain and Cascadia, bound in blood, were a more natural alliance than Cascadia's current standing with the Teutons? Churchill had even spoken glowingly of a "Covenant of the English-Speaking Peoples", a union of Britain, Cascadia, the United States - and if certain circumstances were met, the Grand Dominion - that would guarantee the peace of the world.
In light of this, he had told them that Cascadia would consider an arrangement with Britain similar to the one with Germany, but under no circumstances would Cascadia permit such an agreement to draw it into conflict with the German Empire. He had countered Churchill's vision with one of his own: a "Pacific Agreement" between the various states in the Pacific, including Britaiin and Germany, that would be aimed at reducing the possibility of conflict in the world's largest ocean, a security arrangement that would be centered around the power of the Cascadian Navy.
Ultimately there had been no official agreement, though the British would undoubtedly look to commence talks on some kind of pact in the Pacific, to protect Fuzhow and New Zealand with the Royal Navy tied up in the North Sea. Stephen had no desire to get his country mixed up in the messy Anglo-German tensions, especially not with the dispatches coming in over California, and any agreement that would give the British the security they wanted would go too far in his eyes.
Stockholm had been his last stop. The new government that was open and friendly. Though the Nordic Union and Cascadia had little direct connection, economic ties and some cultural - the overpopulation of Scandinavia had been partially alleviated by emigration to Cascadia and Australia - had been played up and Stephen's family treated to warm Swedish hospitality. Some trade talks had been arranged, a few agreements finalized, and the rest of the time had been spent seeing the sites of Stockholm.
Then had come the trip home, again on the Imperator out of Hamburg. By the time he had returned to New York City, US President James "Jimmy" Rayner (only friends got to call him 'Jimmy', though) had been waiting, and the two Presidents of the North American continent had spent a couple days discussing continental issues while enjoying the hospitality of New York's elite. The main issue was Mexico and California; Mexico was starting the press hard for a plebiscite in Baja on whether they would remain in California or be returned to Mexico, the timing such to clearly take advantage of his trip, and the issue of California's fate was important to everyone. The US enjoyed a de facto control over Los Angeles and the rail-lines leading to it, giving it the Pacific port it craved on an unofficial basis. Cascadia found California just as important; the parts that weren't territorial Cascadian but under the Californian government included half of the fertile central valley of the region and the major oil deposits, which was increasingly fueling the commerce of Cascadia's North American homeland. Stephen made it clear to Rayner that Cascadia could not allow California to be dismembered piecemeal and that their two states should present a strong front toward Mexico. A front that was, admittedly, easier said than done, given that the US Army was barely in a shape to confront Mexico's larger forces and the Cascadian Army only now improving to a borderline acceptable level.

Stephen's meeting with the Cabinet laid out the most recent events. The Treasury would help California cover budget shortfalls for the rest of the year, but it could not do so for the next year without sacrificing spending elsewhere. In California Lawson was insistant on the new taxes and willing to stand toe-to-toe with the Mexicans on the issue. He had shifted forces south and was asking for Cascadian troops - Cadbury had wisely refused, and Stephen would maintain that for now. Moving troops in would escalate the situation more than he desired. But he knew it might have to be done; California could not hold back Mexico by itself without mobilization, and that was too dangerous a route to take. He had MacKenzie make preparations to have a meeting with Lawson soon, over telephone, to sound the Californian leader out.
Other matters came up, serving to reinforce that the 'vacation', as grueling and fast-paced as it had felt at times, was over; it was back to business as usual for him.

Military Co-Operation from the Skies to the Seas

Defense Sub-Minister Martino Aymara today announced two military projects in conjunction with other countries. In an interview with reporters, he stated the following:

"The Bolivarian Union prides itself on having cooperated on a variety of military projects with nations as diverse as Germany and Japan. Today, I can announce that the much-delayed Horsely bomber project will finally see the light of day. The Bolivarian Union has purchased Horsely prototypes and design plans, which right now are being investigated by our technicians. We will produce a prototype next year, so that we can begin series production of the aircraft. We will be able to manufacture the Horsely bomber for the Tuscan Kingdom until their industry is able to produce it locally.

At this time, I can confirm that construction has begun on two Sparta-class heavy cruisers in Byzantium, as approved in the naval budget. I can assure you that the recent political situation in that region of the world has not interfered with their construction."

These aforementioned projects join other existing sales and co-operation efforts, including the home construction of a battleship assisted by Germany. Of course, military news releases by this government have to be received skeptically, since the Cascadian naval visit to Bolivaria is conditional in several respects, and not a done deal as was suggested by a government official last month.

To Sänger, there were several questions to ponder. First, there was the obvious question of security. Germany, after all, prohibited both armed bodyguards as well as carrying weapons in public. An unofficial visit, during which the Graf would not enjoy the armed protection of the police, would therefore be quite risky, given the climate of the Egyptian court where assassination seemed to be a regular way of advancement. So some sort of unofficial protection had to be arranged.

The more serious question though was why the Graf wanted to visit Germany. Though he was pardoned, he was far from being well-liked in the more conservative aristocratic circles. And there was no such thing like an unofficial visit with the Graf, especially given his letter.

That could only mean one thing - the Graf or maybe even the Sultanate wanted to discuss secret matters of state without them being entered into the public record. Sänger could certainly empathize with that. There was, of course, the problem of location. Any Government building would obviously not do. That left a private building and his own house (or rather, the house of his wife) was not ready yet and certainly would not be ready for the time of the visit. Still, he was sure he could impose upon his father-in-law once more. After a telephone conference with the count Volkonsky, Sänger finally felt comfortable to offer a reply.
Euer Hochwohlgeboren,

My wife and I thank you for your kind letter. We are in good health and hope the same is true for your wife and yourself. I am delighted that after spending so much time in Egypt, your German has not suffered in the slightest.

My wife and I look forward to making your acquaintance in person and would suggest a meeting at my father-in-law's townhouse on December the 14th, around teatime.

Signed,
Johannes Sänger
The letter would take about one week to reach the desk of the Graf. With this matter concluded, Sänger went about his other business.

Foreign Ministry announces Aquistion from the Americans

The Foreign and Naval Ministries earlier this month concluded a foreign arms purchase agreement with the government of the United States. The deal will involve the purchase of 20 older Destroyers that the United States had deemed surplus to requirements. After a series of scares involving the safety of the primary battle fleets due to a lack of escorts the Naval Ministry has been investing almost the entirety of its supplementary and planned 1927 budgets in to fixing the deficit even to the point of a pending recommendation to decommission and scrap the older Mexicana-class Battleships.

Terms of the deal were said to include additional basing and preferential harbor rights for US flagged vessels, both commercial and military, on Mexico's Pacific ports along with certain other trade concessions and additional unspecified consideration.

New U-boats commissioned
The German Navy today commissioned the first 12 of 80 submarines expected to enter service in this year. The eighty submarines are of the UB IIIb class, with 24 of them being of the minelaying UB IIIB-M subclass. They will form squadrons in Wilhelmshaven, Kiel, Antwerp and Rotterdam.

German Navy to cut calibers

The German Navy today published a list of calibers it would continue to use:
Present and future calibers:
- 18"/45
- 16.5"/45
- 280mm/52
- 8"/50
- 6"/45 - as QF and DP weapon
- 150mm/45 - U-boat weapon only
- 5"/38 - as DP weapon
- 127mm/50 - as destroyer weapon only
- 120mm/45 - as destroyer weapon only
- 105 mm/45 - U-boat weapon only
- 4"/39 - as DP or AA weapon
- 88mm/56 - AA or DP weapon
- 88mm/45 - U-boat weapon only
- 40mm/45 - AA weapon
- 20mm/22 - AA gun
- 7,92mm/45 - MG
The Navy also detailed plans for calibers not listed in here but in use by coastal fortresses or ships:
Outdated weapons:
- 280mm/40 cal
- 240mm/45 cal
- 240mm/40
- 210mm/45
- 170mm/45
- 75mm/45
- 75mm mortars
- 3 pdr QF
- 70mm/50 cal
- 70mm/18
- 47mm/50
All guns in this category are already only part of coastal fortifications and not used in any ship. Production lines are to be no longer maintained after enough ammunition has been produced to fill up the stockpiles. No new cannons of this caliber will be bought, barrels will not be replaced any more after this year.
Guns in service in coastal fortifications and not in ships
- 305mm/50
- 11"/45
- 150mm/50
- 37mm/45
While these Calibers are not considered outdated, they are not used by any ships in service and therefore will no longer be purchased. However, as coastal guns, they will receive updates if necessary.

The following calibers are used by ships in service and are considered outdated, so they will be phased out.
Guns to be phased out:
- 12"/50
- 12"/45
- 280mm/45
- 150mm/45 - V116 guns (to be replaced with 5"/38 DP guns)
- 10.5 cm/45 - Karlsruhe class light cruisers
- 100mm/50
- 88mm/45 (capital ship version, to be replaced with the 88mm/56 version)
- 88mm/39 (to be replaced with the 88mm/56 version)
- 70mm/45
- 66mm/46
- 40mm/38 - AA weapon (to be replaced by 40mm/45)
- 40mm/39 - AA weapon (to be replaced by 40mm/45)
- 20mm/45 (to be replaced by 20mm/22 gun for faster movement and tracking)
- 0.5"/45 - MG (to be replaced by 7.62mm/45)
The following calibers are currently in use by ships, but will no longer be purchased for future ships unless new ship designs merit a reconsideration.
Guns currently not planned for future designs:
- 16"/50
- 16"/45
- 15"/45
- 8"/45
- 6"/39 - as QF and DP weapon
- 4"/45 - as DP weapon
They are still considered state of the art and will continue to be available for purchase and will be considered for designs.

The reduction in number of calibers was described by one experts as necessary and long overdue.

Tiger, Lion to under go reconstruction
The Two battle-cruisers of Battlefleet, the Tiger and Lion will under go an extensive reconstruction after the arrival of the first two Mercury BCs later this year. The machinery will be completely replaced, converting the vessels into oil-burning ships. The replacement of the machinery is anticipated to free up tonnage to be converted to armor. The two BCs will be stationed with Eastern Fleet after the arrival of the Mercurys. The reconstruction will cost roughly a third of building new vessels, and the main armament shall remain the same.

12 Submersibles ordered
The Admiralty has ordered 12 new submersibles, to be ordered in two groups of 6. These are the first new submersibles ordered since 1922.

Study for "Massive" Battlecruiser leaked
A Study for a follow-on of the Mercury class has been leaked. It appears to be a very early draft, as Altdorf Arsenal has been contracted to work on designing new 18/50 naval guns, rather than the 20/45 proposed in the study...

Documents leaked regarding Cascadian-Mexican standoff

Early today documents were obtained that point to growing tension between Mexico and Cascadia over increasing unrest in the nation of California. While the current government in Ciudad de Mexico has been pressuring the Californians to either allow Baja to vote for separation or at a minimum be given proportional representation in the young legislature, Cascadia has been calling on Mexico to leave the dispute as an internal Californian matter. The documents in question are the notes from a telephone conversation last month between the Secretary of Foreign Affairs and the Chief of Mission to Cascadia regarding the note to be delivered to Cascadia.

While the exact contents of the note remain unknown the Secretary did press the Ambassador to remind the Cascadians that their own blatant interference in California to secure the strategically vital oil fields has set ample precedent for Mexico's interest. Moreover the Secretary instructed the Ambassador to relay Mexico's "grave concern" over Cascadia appearing to denegrate the plight of the Bajanos, the majority of whom are ethnically Mexican....

Overnight, the Al Bayda railway station had transformed from a minor stop on the line from Cairo to Alexandria into a railway hub of some importance. Troops were marching into Al Bayda, some arriving on foot and others on horses or trucks -- some even arrived with tanks or armored cars. The inhabitants of the sleepy town didn't quite know what to make of it, but it was clear that some of the troops that had been stationed in the forts surrounding the Sultanate's key port were being transferred elsewhere.

A similar sight could be seen at several other train stations across the Nile Delta. Troops and military equipment was being loaded onto trains, which promptly set off in the direction of El Qantara el Sharqiya and the large railroad bridge across the Suez canal there. Officially their destination was classified, but it didn't take the most entrepreneurial of the soldiers long to figure out they were being redeployed all the way east, to the Emirate of Kuwait by way of Al-Ghazza and Kerak.

RESULT: Mass redeployment of 3 infantry divisions and 2 cavalry divisions to Kuwait from Egypt.

Portland, Federal District
30 November 1926

The aggressive Mexican response on the issue of California reveberated through the halls of power in Cascadia. Congress was due to start session again shortly; in the meantime it was the Administration that would deal with the issue.
The Mexicans were to release the full terms of their proposed treaty to Cascadia in 1925, a treaty that SecState MacKenzie had signed but which had not been ratified before the invasion of Panama. In retrospect the treaty was a terrible one: in her eagerness to consolidate ties with Mexico and avoid complications in that direction, MacKenzie had accepted an agreement that tied Cascadian hands on any expansionism by Mexico outside of declared allies and, even worse, to make the agreement itself secret, in exchange for vague offers of considering acceptance of Cascadia's modern borders and influence claims in California.
"The Socialists were right, I suppose," Stephen muttered as he reviewed the treaty text once again, Cadbury and MacKenzie attending with him. "We did give them a green light to invade Panama."
"It didn't look that way at the time," MacKenzie protested irritably. She had a desperate tension in her voice, recognizable as someone realizing their job was at risk.
"Didn't look that way at the time? What other reason would they have to pursue such an agreement? And why did you even accept this horrible thing? A secrecy clause? Some vaguely worded remarks on considering the territorial extents of Cascadia into former Mexican territory? You couldn't negotiate for more?"
"I didn't have the leverage I needed. The Army was still thin on the ground - still is thin on the ground - and our naval superiority wouldn't have meant much compared to the Mexican troops pouring into Arizona and Baja. A signed agreement..."
"...is worthless without ratification," he finished for her. "Now the Mexicans are bringing this up to weaken our standing so they can take a cleaver to California, something that we frankly cannot let happen!" Stephen looked to his Vice President. "Andrew, anything to add?"
"I can see why Ms. MacKenzie thought she was doing the necessary thing," he answered, and not too surprisingly. Australian politicians tended to be more concerned about Asian and Indian Ocean affairs. "But I agree on the issue of California. Letting the Mexicans split Baja away from that nation would undermine its independence to a degree we cannot accept."
"Exactly. If the Mexicans want to be bellicose about this issue we can play at that, but let's not cut off the diplomatic route just yet. We will deliver an appropriate reply."
Cadbury nodded at Stephen's remark. Meanwhile MacKenzie, looking very much like a woman condemned to the gallows, took in a breath and asked, "What do you want to do about the treaty, Mister President?"
"Simple. Rachel, I'm sorry to say this, but.... you're fired."

President Garrett Issues Response to Mexican Note

In light of the recent note from the Empire of Mexico the President has issued a reply tothe Mexican Embassy. The note states "regret" at Mexico's stance and accusation of Cascadia ignoring the "plight" of the Bajanos and having already established rights to interfere in California through the ownership of Californian oil fields by the Cascadian-Californian Oil Company. "The existence of business interests of major influence does not equal an attempt to undermine the political fabric of the Californian state," reads the reply. "At no time has Cascadia attempted to undermine the territorial or political integrity of the Californian state, as Mexico now attempts." On the issue of the Bajanos, the note also reads, "Cascadia, home to citizens of Mexican descent as well, harbors no ill will toward the Bajanos of California, and we wish for their political dispute with the central government to be settled fairly and amicably. This is unlikely to occur so long as an outside power is actively involving itself in the situation. Again, we call upon Mexico to support the current Californian state and to encourage them to a solution that is acceptable to all sides of the political dispute."

Secretary of State MacKenzie removed from Cabinet over Mexican Treaty.

This paper has confirmed that Rachel MacKenzie, former Liberal Congresswoman for Klamath Falls, has been removed from her post as Secretary of State in the Garrett Cabinet due to her "poor decision-making" in attempting a treaty with Mexico last year. The decision is sure to enflame the scandal surrounding the recently-revealed treaty, never ratified by the Senate, that would have bound Cascadia into accepting Mexican actions in other regions such as the Caribbean and Central America, including the Panama War. Socialist Party members may feel rightfully vindicated at the accusations they have levied since earlier this year: for all intents and purposes, Ms. MacKenzie did indeed give an approval of the attack on Gran Colombia. It is regrettable that Ms. MacKenzie, once hailed as the brightest foreign-interested House Representative, has had her career end in such a woeful matter. Nevertheless, we cautiously approve this action, and hope the Liberals of the Garrett Administration choose their next Secretary of State more wisely.

Navy Department - Washington, D.C.

Secretary of the Navy Theodore Roosevelt, Jr. had only recently been confirmed to the post of SECNAV by the Senate, and one of his first acts was to discuss the planned 1928-series of ship designs with his Chief of Naval Operations, Admiral Edward W. Eberle. This would be an ambitious plan, with designs for nearly every type of warship presently in service. It would also seek to standardize much of the weaponry in use by various warships. The Germans had very recently decided to standardize their weapons calibers, and SECNAV Roosevelt knew there was considerable merit to such a plan.

Another item of consideration was the Battleship designs. Neither design as proposed would fit through the Panama Canal. This would require the ships to take the long way around South America, should they be needed in the Pacific. While the competing Nicaraguan Canal would be large enough, it would not be completed until some time in the future. Another option, of course, was expanding the Panama Canal. This would require a joint effort with Gran Colombia, and could potentially cause trouble with the Mexicans, Roosevelt knew. As such, he would definately need to discuss it with the President.
