Not sure that's an appropriately British dreadnought name. :P

You already have Revenge right? How about Relentless? Marina assigned it to an 1898 predread counter-proposal to a design I showed her... which I called Sovereign as well. 8) And I took to it. Though I also upped it to 1900.

Granted, I fully expect us to duplicate names. Cascadia uses the British naming schemes more than she does American really. :mrgreen: Not my fault I don't have that many states to pick from and the Brits always have the best names! Seriously, what's more scary? A ship named Rhode Island or a ship named Warspite or Revenge or Terror? 8)

For deck armor you might have a point. Might because again IMS Springsharp designers are on record saying to put armor only in the Fore and Aft entry...

Springsharp assumes that you also have an upper belt, that covers the remaining ~6 feet. Your designs did away with that without adding any further height to the main belt.

By all means, go ahead with it, just do not complain if ingame your ships are about 60% more likely to sink than others.

At this range, it does not protect your turrets from heavy cruiser fire. You should have at least 12 inches. Of course, if you want your ships to be easily sunk, be my guest. I am just trying to help here so that you can prevent your ships getting sunk more often than others and being wastes of steel.

Not quite. Springsharp does not assume you have an upper belt. It gives you the option of an upper belt to allow simulating incremental as opposed to all or nothing armor. Which by the way is a pretty good indicator on why you should not increase the depth of the side belt above what springsharp gives since you end with the pretty absurd situation of a ship with all or nothing armor having to devote more weight than a ship with incremental armor for the same maximum belt thickness.

Show me a ship of the era or indeed a WW2 era ship aside from Yamato that had 12in armor on the sides of the turrets. The closes you can go are Nelson and the King George Vs but even there that was the max thickness with the armor varying from 9 to 11in in the case of the Nelson. Also note that while you claim 12in as the minimum necessary this wasn't even reached on most battleship designs. Indeed the only ones I can think going above 11in were Vanguard (13in) and Yamato. For a German example Bismarck had between 5 and 8in armor for the sides and roof.

Uhm. Last I had seen springsharp was not a ship design program. It is a reasonably good simulator for warships ships in the 1850-1950 for the purposes of amateurs. It's final product is also accurate enough... at least since you can simulate historical designs reasonably well. But that's about it and you can't even say that individual parts of it are as accurate as the final product is. Take the obvious example that it always takes 10-15% more power than the historical designs to reach the same speeds.

On the issue of side/rear/roof turret armor, I've noticed a lot of designs list only 5-7" for such.

I gave 12 inches as advice to people who wanted new armor heavy ships on the basis of the protection that will provide wide against 16-18in guns and near total immunity to cruiser caliber rounds at 10,000 yards. A good 8in shell can defeat as much as 10in of armor at that distance if it was to gain a favorable angle relative to the turret arc of train. So 12in protection provides a nice measure of safety in that scenario as the secondary battery may not be effective at much greater distances.

In real ships the primary criteria for how thick the sides and especially the rear plates are was how much weight was necessary for turret balance against the front loaded weight of the guns and faceplates. This often meant the rear plate was thicker then the sides. The roof was governed by how thick deck armor was and how much it was sloped. I’m pretty sure springsharp uses the deck armor thickness for it.

Older ships certainly had less such armor; they also tended to have lots of similar thickness armor all over the hull so it didn’t seem like a liability in the time before anyone had effective APC shells.

3b3 doesn't seem to count deck armor as top turret armor, that's handled by the Other selection for gun armor.

Well whatever it still doesn’t matter much. For a new ship a 12 inch average is still perfectly acceptable. The N3 class for example, and a number of the other RN 1920 designs for that matter, had 18in faceplate, 14in sides, 14in rear and an 8in roof. The latter three figures would average out closely enough to 12in.

Take the blücher, add 2000 more tons + 1 8inch gun and then call it Sparta?

More seriously, though, I had a similar design, but decided to keep the Blücher at 15kt. Because the cost of such a ship is so high in construction that it almost approaches that of a small BC, so I decided against it. Obviously, if you got the points to spare, more power to you, but I found it very, very costly.

Madagascar's first class of dreadnoughts, consisting of two ships (Radama I, Andrianampoinimerina). 15,000 tons standard. Built in Britain By Armstrong-Whitworth to Malagasy specs, they are conceptually a cut-down version of HMS Neptune, with the the midships "en-echelon" turrets replaced by a single centerline mount for a main battery of 8 guns. Madagascar's first battlecruiser, 26,000 tons standard; built in Britain to Madagascar's specification, which included heavy armor protection contrary to standard British practice due to the Merina Navy's requirement that it be able to stand in the battleline due to their limited number of capital ships. Controversially, armor was concentrated over vital areas to save weight, dispensing with incremental armor, a practice adopted in all of Madagascar's later dreadnoughts. Was the largest warship in Madagascar's navy on completion, and one of the fastest dreadnoughts in the world at nearly 29 knots

Third class of dreadnought battleships, first to be built entirely in Madagascar, though with continued British assistance. Consists of four ships (HMMS Andriambe [Sovereign], Radama II, Bakalanisahala [Incomparable], Tabiha [Splendour]) Essentially enlarged from Andriamanjaka-class, main armament is 10 x 35cm/45 (13.8in), based on Vickers 14-inch. Citadel armor protection increased dramatically, especially deck armor, to protect against plunging fire at increased battle ranges, while incremental armor was reduced, following the pattern of Madagascar's first battlecruiser. Secondary guns enlarged to 14cm/50, in light of the increasing size of destroyers and newer longer ranged torpedoes. First class to incorporate AA guns by design

Fourth class of dreadnoughts, and latest currently in service: 32,500 tons standard. Four units (Fandresena [Victory], Baibo [Headstrong], Miangiangy [Arrogant], Fahafahana [Liberty]). Madagascar's latest class of battlecruisers, and the largest warships in the navy. Class consists of two ships (Valifaty [Vengeance], Voninahitra [Glory]), 43,000 tons standard, capable of exceeding 30 knots. Main battery is the same as the contemporary Fandresena-class battleships. Armor is somewhat thinner, though in a first for Merina Navy capital ships, the main belt is inclined inward to increase protection. Carries three spotting planes by design. Also Madagascar's first capital ship to be fueled entirely by oil. Like their battleship contemporaries, the expense of the building program that produced these ships is considered the tipping point for Madagascar's communist revolution

Madagascar's next class of dreadnoughts, the first capital ships laid down since the revolution. They have a designed displacement of 45,000 tons standard. Currently under construction, scheduled to be completed late 1926. Two units yet unnamed, intended to replace Radama I-class in battleline. Main battery is twelve 40cm/45. Secondary battery contained entirely in enclosed, weatherproof mountings. Main belt no thinker than previous classes, though now mounted internally and inclined for increased protection. Madagascar's first dreadnought with flush deck. Speed increased over previous classes, to outrun the surface speed of the newest classes of submarines

Is this reasonable?

Two of the submarines that the Bolivarian Union recently commissioned are of the experimental Type X1a variety.
These submarines are patterned on the British X1 submarine (which was further based on the German U173 design), except that the X1a is not patterned as a surface commerce raider, but rather as a conventional torpedo submarine - the Bolivarian Navy never had a doctrine for surface raiding.

The submarines are modeled on the hull of the X1, which had good underwater handling characteristics, but the X1a lacks the four 5-inch guns in their two turrets, along with the shell stowage and complex loading mechanism. Instead, the torpedo room is enlarged, allowing for four reloads for the six 21-inch torpedo tubes. The torpedo room is much more spacious than on the X1 design, allowing for greater and faster reloads. The submarine's surface armament consists of a single U-boat-style 4-inch gun and two dual .30 caliber anti-aircraft machine guns.

Due to the absence of the twin turrets and associated mechanisms, the interior of the submarine is less cramped than the X1. However, there remain problems with the machinery, though with greater available room and less stringent requirements, the mechanical difficulties are not as great as that of the X1. The X1a launched in 1924, but has been conducting extensive fitting out and trials and has not yet been officially commissioned. There are still technical issues (gear failures) being worked out.

A second class based on the X1a, the X2, was laid down in January. With greater streamlining, and an improved layout based on the experience of the X1a, the X2 will have a slightly-higher surface and submerged speed, and it will be rated for the maximum depth that the X1 was originally intended for. However, because it is increasingly streamlined for underwater operations, the maximum range is reduced compared to the X1a.

Personally, I think it seems fine. I've got my own C2 class which is around 2.1kt and similar in performance, though, a shorter range by 4.5knms/2.5knms. It only sports four forward tubes/two stern tubes and is a bit slower overall, but has better submerged performance then your X2.

Yes, I think in the case of the Bolivarian Union, a specialized new underwater hunter-killer design will be necessary in order to improve underwater performance.

I stayed with the twins superfiring triples arrangement, and the large separation oif the individual turrets, similar to Carraciolo. Secondary artillery is considerable with 4 twins per side, that's a design tribute to the losses to torpedo boat attacks during the Austro-Italian war.
A successor design of about 65 000 to 70 000 ts is on the drawing board, but first I have to enlarge my shipyards and find out wether these will fit through the Mesoamerican Canal and the Suez channel.

EDIT: revised the design. Now she's a 1 kt slower at full speed, but carries a wider, but thinner armour belt.

Yeah. That's not a Fast Battleship: that's a Standard. Fast Battleship would be something in the neighborhood of 30 knots.

Might not even have to make it to 30. 27 knots is still a fast battleship. 23 knots is definitely a regular battleship though.

Heh, I probably could save a bit of tonnage on Defiant if I lowered her engine speed from the current 31+ knots with 194,000hp total engine power.
