Right now all this stuff should be inaccurate as hell unless people have actually been working on accurate RVs for a long time (like, full-on ICBMs ... which AFAIK only I've been playing with, specifically for testing - and spending a fortune on doing it). Accurate re-entry is actually pretty hard if you want to hit the target, even with nuclear weapons. As for guidance, it'll probably be inertial at this point, though various IRBMs like Pershing II had a a radar to sense terrain and guide its RV.

Such exquisitely manufactured shafts that pierce through the atmosphere and KILLFUCK the fuck out of peoples!

What's up with the gossip? There's no violence between Shroompard and Svetlana, mang.

The only thing violent would be when they ride each other up like bedroom carousels.

Wind can be measures by having satellites look at clouds and stuff. Weather satellites!
Nonsense. If you don't launch the projectiles with enough velocity they will instead float around in space before maybe landing on earth several hundreds of kilometers off target. And if you launch them too hard without any retrothrusters firing, you will send your dynasoar off orbit and even create more problems with targeting.

As for satellites, measuring the wind flow at all altitudes is difficult.
PeZook wrote:You could accomplish guidance by shaping the rod in a way that gives parts of it some lift, and then fitting it with maneuvering engines: that's exactly how space capsules work on descent.
That might work, but there will be a fairly high failure rate during initial testing.

It deorbits in a matter of minutes, it's designed for optimized reentry, and it goes really fucking fast. Once it's up to speed (which it will be long before it reaches the really windy bits of the atmosphere) I doubt it's possible for wind to affect it in any meaningful way.
For one thing, I have no idea whether it is even possible to launch those tungsten fit stabilized shots with enough velocity on an aircraft like that.

Coyote, about those MiG-21's. I have 40 of them, but I'm selling 24 to Fingolfin.(He asked first.)

You can have the rest, if you want?

And it has enough space to accomodate the recoil mechanism of a gun and its associated charges, the reload system etc.? I am going to add that a miserably small projectile is going to do as much damage as the debris from the Space Shuttle Columbia.

Hrm, sometime this week I shall have to write my IC inaugeration speech and post it, since the new year starts this weekend and I figure that Cascadian Presidents are sworn in during the last couple months of the year.

Also have to plan that Frequesue state visit tour with Siege. :)

As a note, early RVs were actually subsonic on their terminal run  so I'd expect it to take some time until we can get accurate, high-speed RVs (hence my earlier whitepaper that gives Tonkin - and the rest of the world - time to get countermeasures into play).

Also, MiG-21s in Velaria? Huzzah, we can re-fight the Vietnam War since I sent Phantoms to Rangatara. Just pay no attention to the accents of the pilots

Haha, strippers.

You should know that Shroomania also has totally hot chicks and whores. But, yeah, I guess we're kind of overshadowed in that regards by our Canissian neighbors since their chicks are like buy-one-take-one and all that with the whole polygamy thing.

It's just that Shroomania has true gender equality, something even those goddamn communist nations envy. I mean, we sexualize both genders in equally ridiculous levels. But I guess the world's not yet ready for the age of beautiful men.

Either that or those Shinrans are just closet homophobes.

Actually, Canissia and Shroomania are pretty much alike in that we tend to sexualize a lot-- but in Canissia, we emphasise beautiful women, along with pools of booze and sex acts that involve food like chocolate spread, etc. And hot tubs.

And while polygamy (multiple wives) and polygany (multiple husbands) both are legal, as is group/communal marriage (all must be consenting adults), only a small portion of the population partakes of it.

I actually agree. Siege did one test which could be a total fluke, but now it's been two with accurate re-entry.

First tests are almost guaranteed to fail...

Gun? What are you talking about? What would a gun be doing on these orbiters? We certainly don't sell them with guns installed... The military version can carry 3,600kg excluding rotary launcher (or whatever equipment Shroom is using to launch his KKVs) etc. 3,000+kg of tungsten slamming into the ground at hypersonic speed is more than enough to make a pretty big hole in the planet. And this isn't debris entering at a shallow angle, nor is it a relatively fragile spaceship: it's a solid tungsten rod aimed straight down. So what Columbia has to do with this I can't even fathom.

SiegeTank wrote:It's silly to try and guide a KKV anyway. It's not a missile. It's a rod entering the atmosphere at hypersonic velocity, sheated in plasma. It doesn't even have engines. How'd you guide something like that?
External burning, manuevering engines, or just normal aerodynamics can effect manuevering. The more difficult part is to get guidance references so you know where to manuever to. Something to be aware of is that the same part of the atmosphere in a different location can have different density. So you need to come pretty close to straight down to reduce the effects of this as much as possible.
EDIT: PS: It's not a Dyna-Soar. Dyna-Soar can't carry weapons insofar as I know. S-1 Silver Streak is designed to carry 3,600kg of ordinance-- either in satellites, astronauts, or missiles.
The Dynasoar is equipped with a cargo bay behind the pilot.

The interests of Tian Xia in high speed flight should help with MESS abilities in this area, however.

Last point: Rods from god won't give nuclear level results. The energy density is about 8 times that of TNT. So your 1000 kg rod will hit with the power of about 8 2000lb bombs. (Actually, a bit less due to various effects not accounted for here). This is of course impacted even more the steeper the re-entry (more orbital velocity needs to be burned off, resulting in less impact velocity)

No problem. You can even mount rather decent weapons on them, since they were relegated to reserve service IIRC three years ago, so their avionics are decently modern.

Kicking some development contracts our way would be cool, though ;)

Hmmmm.... I think that can be worked with. The port at Khalid need upgrading, after all...

So far they have no real ship tradition beyond some fishing boats. We're giving them a handful of patrol ships for a navy, but they need a decent port for commerce. I think we cna work a deal.
