I am sure those anti-Shroomite Shinrans will ban our bikes from their country because they are not "Road Safe" or "Road Legal" because they have economic tariff whatevers on all sorts of products with 'Shroom' on them.

SAMURAI SUICIDE MOBILE!

ORGAN DONATOR!

I must think up of something also...

The MacMillan THYROID STORM!

Question. Do those organ donation cards mean that the rider will have organs donated to him in the event of untimely death, or that his organs will be harvested? :P

Heh, eventually, you will have to make those bikes robots, because no human could possibly survive being slapped in the face by hundreds of MPH worth of airspeed :D

So, you know, I was reading a huge ass 476 page report on HARDTACK I from 1958, and it mentioned how for one test, they put a nuke onto a high altitude weather balloon, and initated it at 85,000 feet. Anyway, it mentioned how they used USS Boxer (then in CVS configuration) as a launch platform -- and it took them an hour to set up and launch the damn thing.

To Wit:
At 0800, Boxer had begun its downwind course, attempting to keep the air motion on the deck below 10 knots (18.5 km/hr) while keeping the ship's pitch and roll to a minimum.

During the next hour and 20 minutes, the uninflated balloon was laid out in preparation for inflation and tne instrument canisters and the YUCCA bomb were rigged. Attachment of radar reflectors, the nuclear device, and Instrumentation to the uninflated balloon completed the rigging.

At 1005 the Sandia Corporation arming party began preliminary device checkout, and the amount of helium to be used was calculated by the AFCRC balloon-launch crew. Boxer maneuvered to eliminate any relative wind on the flight deck after 1015. At 1034 the arming party notified the AFCRC personnel to start the inflation. From 1034 to 1059 the balloon was filled with helium. At 1101 the balloon, hitherto restrained in a horizontal position on canvas on the flight deck, was released to assume a vertical position, restrained only at its base by the launcher. It was 80 feet (24 meters) high. From 1103 to 1115 the arming party finished readying the weapon for firing. At 1124 checks at the launcher verified that the safing pins were out and the tracking beacon on. At 1125 YUCCA was released.

The balloon climbed rapidly. It reached 7,000 feet (2.1 km), in 7 minutes and 12,000 feet (3.7 km) in 15 minutes. At 1206 the balloon reached 40,000 feet (12.2 km). where the baro switch system permitted arming and actuated the backup electrical timer. At 1253 the balloon was at 85,000 feet (26 km).
So, from getting beginning the balloon launch process, to reaching final target altitude of 85,000 feet; it took a mere five hours.

OK, Evidently I missed it back o nthe last game page thread... but can someone tell me what the HELL Shepp is thinking building a 1,246 feet long and 450,000 ton Warship? Is this thing for real? Is it a figment of his delusion state? How long has this been in the works? Cause if theres a 1200foot long ship going around, I'd want to say something about it!

do you really think Shep could build a 450,000 ton ship made mostly of concrete?

No, Shep merely took Skimmer's idea.... And not necessary made of concrete. Rather of foam.

And before it was skimmer's idea, it was an idea tossed around in teh US Navy. Check the tail end of Norman Friedman's US Destroyers, 2nd Edition.
And not necessary made of concrete. Rather of foam.
Actually, large parts of it are with foam which has had fire retardant material impregnated into it; and it also has large amounts of concrete to provide armor/shock resistance -- because concrete generally shatters/crumbles under a very large impact, while steel warps into totally weird shapes which are a bitch to cut out and repair.

Oh, Lonestar?
swarms of protesters from the Cascadian Green Party, the Cascadian Socialist Party, the Cascadian Social Worker Party, the Socialist Party of Cascadia, The Social Marxist Party, The Green Brigade, and the National Rifle Association....
First would be the Evergreen Party, not the Green, the third through fifth don't exist, I can see the sixth existing as a militant branch of the Evergreen Party, and while there likely is a Cascadian NRA, I'm curious as to your logic of them protesting an OD ship... :P

I just wanted a list of a whole bunch of Left groups and then the NRA. :P

Stas, if those things really work, out Orion project just got massively simplified. Because ejecting a two meter long bomb and timing the explosion is much harder than just ejecting a small cube and laser-igniting it.

Not to mention we can save lots of volume :)

I was wondering, though...the actual energy density didn't really change: it's just that the fuel is very concentrated. That means payloads for bombers won't change much, since the mass will remain roughly the same.

Same for infantrymen: carrying even a 30kg device is still a huge burden. Though mech infantry could probably move several of them with tripod mounted delivery means :)

That is right, the mass doesn't change. Weight is just half the equation, volume is the other. The Tsar Bomb for example was not in excess of a Tu-95's weight limits (18000 tons is waaaay above it's 7 ton mass) but was made impractical by size constraints that made it unwieldy and required external carriage on modified Tu-95s and Tu-16s. Another part is the ignition mechanism. With laser ignition as opposed to fission-assisted ignition that any currently existing staged thermonuclear weapon requires, volume and weight constraints both go down at a very critical level - the small arms level. Small thermonuclear pellets atop ATGMs, small missiles, etc. just became viable. The energy release by 1,4 kg of UDD would be greater than any chemical augmentation for armor-piercing projectiles, for example. It would occupy barely a few millimeters, but offer new potential for the weapons. Basically, this offers the ability to ignite very compact warheads of completely variable size.

Take an old weapon - say, an S-8 missile. It's too small to carry any combined fusion-fission thermonuclear warhead, but it's an ubiqutous missile in CATO arsenals. Put a UDD pellet of corresponding mass with a laser ignition mechanism on the missile and voila, previously harmless and obsolete device has a yield far in excess of any chemical explosive that this missile could carry. A single Ka-29 has turned into a WMD. Lightweight airborne MRLS using S-8 that me and Fingolfin are procuring has turned into a nuclear gridfire mechanism. Et cetera. Volume does mean a lot.
