Joanna Dark - Haven't finished playing though Zero yet, but she does an awful lot of damage in the original.

Kusanagi from Ghost in the Shell - she's a l33t haX0r [/l33t sp33k].

Deunan Knute from Appleseed.

Visas is a Jedi Sentinel, too. The Handmaiden, however, is a guardian, after being a solider, resulting in a character who's a tank.

Actually, she is a sentinel. The only guardians you can get in the game are the Exile (if you created him/her that way), Bao Dur, and the Handmaiden (if the Exile is male).

Doesn't detract from your point any (I have nothing against sentinels), though IMHO Visas acts too emo to be much more than eye candy with a lightsaber.

On topic, I heartily second the nominations of "Death Incarnate" Ivanova (I'm surprised she was added to the list as late as she was). Delenn had her moments, but not enough to warrant my vote. Samus, of course, goes without saying.

That's about all I can think of at the moment.

Teela Brown of Ringworld - a woman selectivly breed to be lucky who eventually becomes a Protector to save the Ring.

I know that luck isn't something that can be quantified into levels of competency, but with how things just seem to fall into place for her it would probably good for you to have her on the team.

as book characters and such are being added :-

Durham Red of 2000 AD fame, a babe with attitude, a body you will die for (a girls got to eat after all) and finally wiped out two battlefleets.

Rose Tyler as the vortex empowered time warrior "the time war has ended".

The ship captain out of Full Metal Panic.

That pretty much covers the one I feel are best without repeating someone else :)

Leeloo is awesome. She's superpowered and that, but not superwanked out. You'll notice that even though she's the Supreme Being Sent to Earth to Save the Universe, the first time she encounters a dude packing heat, all her mad kung-fu skills isn't worth a damn.

I still say Samus is better since she is packing heat ;). (In addition to being biologically perfect, superhuman, savior of the universe and a "metahuman").

If We're talking AD, don't Forget psy Judge Anderson, an excellent hth fighter, excellent firepower, amazing psychic and she managed to hold off the Dark Judges and J.Death himself While he possesed her.
Rose Tyler as the vortex empowered time warrior "the time war has ended".
Too much of aliability when not a plot device.

Tess is good as long as she is on the ship, the moment she is off it she is way too accident-prone and no where near strong enough to be of any use. She is a great leader, but can't fight at all. I would probably prefer Mao over Tess in a combat situation, but Tess for leading from the rear. I know Tess beat Mao in a simulated battle, but they were using paint bullets and Tess still couldn't handle the pressure. Kaname handles combat situations better than Tess, and Kaname is a civilian with no combat background whatsoever.

Why has nobody mentioned Zoe Washburn (firefly) yet?

She was able to use a rifle one-handed to shoot a moving target after having been knocked to the ground. If thats not badass, I don't know what is.

River too. Highly trained possibly pre-cognitive psychic with mad martial skills and is crack shot when armed. If this is post Serenity River she's not insane anymore either.

Samus doesn't work in this thread because she's wank-tastic.

She was still a bit whimsical in the brains.

Plus Zoe has a far nicer ass.

Most of the good ones have been mentioned already but:

1) Andromada Ascendant - Avatar of a warship
2) Trance Gemeni - Avatar of a sun

Both from the Andromeda series.

Its a shitty series but personnally the idea of having a ship run by an ultra smart AI is appealing.
The latter is pretty cool since she has that whole "seeing into the future" and if all else fails she can go supernova :P

Samus is not "mainstream sci-fi". She's a fucking computer-game character, and she's from a horribly overrated game at that. It's amazing how often I hear someone point out that Halo is overrated, when Nintendo fanboys bullshit about how great Metroid is all the time and no one says anything. I finally played Metroid Prime a while ago, and it fucking sucks donkey balls. There's no human interaction, the plot is less emotionally involving than a telephone book, and you spend all your time wandering around trying to solve fucking lame-ass puzzles like "search the whole area looking for 5 small runes hidden in the bricks" or the ever-popular "go around in circles because you're not sure where to go next or you have to backtrack to get some kind of bonus item before you can move on" trick. And then there's the stupidity of your character folding up into a ball which is smaller than its torso originally was, and alien ruins having conveniently located travel holes which happen to precisely fit this stupid ball.

I remember once I saw somebody post that Metroid Prime kicks the shit out of Halo as a game. I can only say that I wish I knew who that person was now, so that I could tell him he's a fucking idiot.

Kerrigan from StarCraft, could tear it up before becoming ruler of the zerg.

Matako Kusanagi from Ghost in the Shell is also good in the ass kicking department

Tak the hideous new girl from Invader Zim was a competent pilot and almost succeeded in destroying the earth

Metroid Prime is not the first Metroid game, nor is it the best. And a lot of people LIKE exploring, solving puzzles, finding secrets, using their brain as opposed to mindlessly running around shooting everything they see. A lot of people like having to actually figure out for themselves what they are supposed to do, or what they are going to do since there tend to be a number of options (less so in Metroid Prime games than in the 2D games), as opposed to having every door conveniently locked except the one they are supposed to go into next. A lot of people like having to figure out how best to handle a certain situation, which out of a wide variety of weapons would best solve a given problem, as opposed just grabbing the heaviest or most accurate weapon they can find and starting to shoot. People like Metroid games because they make you think, make you solve problems for yourself, make you keep your eyes peeled for things that are out of the ordinary, remember places you know have something important that you can't reach so you can come back for it later, figure out which items to use to solve a particular problem.

HALO is a FPS, you shoot stuff and that is about it (okay, sorry, you blow stuff up with grenades, too). Many people like that, others don't. Metroid games are action-adventure games, you explore, you solve puzzles, you find items that expand your abilities to reach new areas, you use your brain. Many people like that, others don't. It is perfectly valid for you to like FPS game and not Metroid games, but don't call people idiots because they don't agree.

At the risk of angering our most glorious Emperor. The reason Samus can turn into a ball smaller than her original mass is a function of the Chozo battle armor she is wearing. Also the planet has many Chozo ruins hence the "convenient passages" In the game one of the Space Pirate logs you can scan actually states they have experimented trying to reverse engineer Chozo technology but gave up on the morph ball after "several disaterous failed attempts."

Anyway, I like both games for totally different reasons. (As they are two totally differnet types of games) Halo you play when you just want to blow stuff up. Metriod you play when you want a good adventure challenge.
