40k Titans
Here's something that I've always been curious about. I know everyone describes Titans as uber, but never go into details. So, just how big/powerful are they?
Have a very nice day.

Imagine a Battletech mech.
Now imagine something that uses said Btech mech for a toothpick.
That's a titan.
They are something akin to land warships, essentially, giant vessels of destruction with crews, capital-ship type weapons, you name it.
Others can provide a bit more specifics than I can, being as how I'm more of a fluffmonger than a gamemonger.

Back in the old strategic level game, the legs of the largest mechs were manned by garrisons and defended or assaulted like fortresses, complete with machineguns, heavy weapons, etc. The Imperator is almost literally a fortress on two smaller fortresses armed with enourmous versions of the standard 40k heavy weapons.

Now, see, that's the kind of generic "Titans are teh Uber" reply I was talking about.Imagine a Battletech mech.

As mentioned by Petro, they are effing huge. Battle titans are sixty meters or so tall. Their main weapons are converted starship weapons. They are protected by shields just like starships. The operators use a mind link to communicate with the mind of a titan (they possess a sort of intelligence).
They are a mix of mobile weapons platform and war altar. They are the most sophisticated machines produced by Adeptus Mechanicus (starships are more powerful, but generally not as sophisticated or compact) and are revered by the Mechanicus as manifestations of the machine god. They are religious icons and weapons of destruction.

Bah, I was figuring that the reference to cap ship weapons might help, being as how we've had some fairly extensive discussions on the nature and power of 40K cap ships around here.fgalkin wrote:Now, see, that's the kind of generic "Titans are teh Uber" reply I was talking about.![]()

Oh, I've heard that Ttians carry scaled down starship weapons before. HOW MUCH scaled down is the question.Petrosjko wrote:Bah, I was figuring that the reference to cap ship weapons might help, being as how we've had some fairly extensive discussions on the nature and power of 40K cap ships around here.fgalkin wrote:Now, see, that's the kind of generic "Titans are teh Uber" reply I was talking about.![]()

The high end of titan weapon firepower is low megatons. Of course, a Warlord class Titan has four main weapon mounts . . . .

The smallest titan, a warhound is about twice the height of a Knight (mini-titan, or titan-lite, if you will). And Knights are easily the size of a BTech Atlas.
The average Warlord titan (4 main weapons) would stand 60+ metres tall and is capable of holding its own again a group of 16+ super heavy tanks with support. Add to a titan a supporting infantry/tank group (or even a lighter titan or knights) and it becomes even more effective. Titans are combined arms monsters.
The Imperator has been described in fluff numerous times as being mistaken for a mountain. It is simply enormous. The mini doesn't do it justice.
And, as a note, Titans are apparently, exceptionally agile as well.

They have void shields, which are the shields that starships in the Imperium use. A few of them also have things like chainfists which they use for close-combat (and they apparently move pretty fast too. It's gotta hurt to be smashed by a giant, metal, chainsaw fist).
As for guns, they have things like huge lascannons, or volcano cannons, and stuff. I've heard that they can obliterate cities and mountain ranges within few volleys and such.
Only another Titan, or a specific anti-Titan weapon like the Shadowsword (I think) can counter one.

Go here for some obscenely expensive but nice-looking miniature Titans. (Scroll down for Imperial models) One thing to not is that all of the Titans pictured are Warhound varients, the smallest available model, in other words.

Titans are among the most powerful land vehicles in 40K, capable of levelling cities in short order with their main weapons.
There are three commonly observed classes, Warhound, Reaver, and Warlord. Imperators are less common.
Warhounds stand around 20 meters tall, with two main weapon mounts, typically a Vulcan megabolter and some form of energy weapon. They're vulnerable to attack from tanks and such, but can also play footie with them (as Defensor Fidei does in Storm of Iron).
Reavers are about 30-35 meters tall, with three main weapons - most often observed is a Titan-grade close combat weapon and two long range ones.
Warlords come in three sizes, light, medium and heavy. Light Warlords are 40 meters high, Medium ones are fifty meters high, and Heavy ones are sixty. They have four primary weapons, two shoulder mounted and two forearm mounted, normally a mix of energy and solid weapons. They can also mount single shot Vortex/Barrage/Warp missile launchers and Titan CCWs.
Imperators are well over seventy meters tall, armed with a defence laser, plasma annihilator, Hellstorm Cannon and an unspecified dorsal armament. They're also phenomonally agile for something that big, as seen when the Dies Irae takes on CCW-armed Warlords and Reaver (and wins, I might add).

Question: Isn't the defense laser a scaled-down version of starship lance batteries. And also, is there any fluff that states how scaled-down the weapons are (although even scaled-down, a lance battery would be VERY fething cool indeed).Black Admiral wrote:Titans are among the most powerful land vehicles in 40K, capable of levelling cities in short order with their main weapons.

Any connection between your reality and mine is purely coincidental.
Yet what he creates tends to be total shit. Example: Ode to Spot.
Purely subjective. Believe it or not, there are people who like that poem.

No data really, except the rather vague statement of starship firepower being "thousands" of times greater than that of Titans in Execution Hour.Star-Blighter wrote:Question: Isn't the defense laser a scaled-down version of starship lance batteries.
Quite possibly. It's certainly a scaled-down antiship weapon.

I always liked the scene in Fire Warrior(novel) where Kais first sees a Titan.
He's wondering what the hell a building is doing inside this huge hangar, then he pulls back his perception a bit, and essentially goes "Holy SHIT!"

The eldar titan is the coolest. Just look at it. This is there smallest titan (they don’t have the biggest king but they do have small and medium) and the models down near the feet are taller than a normal human.
This thing is described as making imperil titans look ungainly.
The rules and some fluff can be found hear http://www.forgeworld.co.uk/PDF/revenant.pdf
