Solid Snake vs. Sam Fisher
Well, since Snake Eater, The Twin Snakes, and Pandora Tomorrow are all on the way, I figured this was a worthy topic...not in Gaming, since while it has game characters, it doesn't have anything to do with playing games.
Anyhoo, Solid Snake and Sam Fisher have both been inserted into opposite ends of the Big Shell (from MGS2), and have standing orders that the other is leading a terrorist cell and is to be shot on sight. Supposing that they have their 'standard' equipment (USP & M9 for Snake, whatever for Sam), and whatever they can loot from the guards, who comes out on top?
Frankly, I'm kind of torn. On one hand, Sam's a pretty sneaky guy...but Snake can identify helicopters by the noise their rotors make, so you'd think he'd be hard to sneak up on. Nobody gets stealth suits or anything of that sort, so that's right out the window...

And while in MGS1 an old, outdated mech gave Snake a hell of a time, in MGS2, he fries serveral new, top of the line mechs. Talk abotu continutiy errors. That aside, Fisher appears behind Snake and procedes to seperate his spinal chord from his neck vertibrea. Snake goes down hard.

Considering how many soldiers your namesake and Sam Fisher take out in the course of a level, I'm afraid you wouldn't have too much of a chance. (Unless the player was really stupid and tried to engage you while you were next to an alarm or something. )SolidSnake wrote:What about the SD.net SolidSnake, a soon-to-be Army grunt?

I voted for snake. While both Snake and Fisher are good infiltration agents, Snake is able to defend himself better, he took out various mechs all by himself...

[sarcasm]Ooooh, wow... Solid Snake can take out a mech. How skillful, he's so manly.[/sarcasm]
Goddamnit! Sam Fisher wouldn't even let himself be detected. The mech would suddenly lose power and fall over without ever knowing whats going on and about 3 hours later a whole bunch of people will wake up with really sore heads wondering why they are curled up hidden in a corner with the light globe missing...

I think we should discount the whole "Snake can take on mechs" arguement, since it has not been seen whether or not Mr. Fisher can deal with one himself.

Well, fucking gee whiz eh, that sounds like the compulsory objectives on half the Splinter Cell missions, and thats when its played on NORMAL!avatarxprime wrote:For anyone who doubts Snake's skill at stealth, ever tried to get the Big Boss ranking in MGS2? You can never be seen. You can never continue. However, anyone who has gotten this ranking can kick just about anyone's ass in any fps style game. It is scary seeing a Big Boss ranked player go at it.
Solid Snake is not a stealthy man, at all.

Metal Gear REX was a state-of-the-art prototype offensive Metal Gear with redundent defense and control systems piloted by his double, Liquid Snake.Darth Garden Gnome wrote:And while in MGS1 an old, outdated mech gave Snake a hell of a time, in MGS2, he fries serveral new, top of the line mechs.
The Metal Gear RAY Army was a bunch of copies of the Marine Corps prototype merely for Arsenal's defense controlled by a virus-infected AI. Given the relative mobility of REX compared to RAY, its no suprise RAY's armor is a lot shittier.

You've played Splinter Cell I'm sure. Is Fisher really the kind of guy who'd go toe to toe with a nice big mech? I don't think he is...Illuminatus Primus wrote:Wank wank wank.weemadando wrote:[sarcasm]Ooooh, wow... Solid Snake can take out a mech. How skillful, he's so manly.[/sarcasm]

I've played Splinter Cell (am finishing it off now) and all the MGS games plus the original MG, but really Snake isn't the same as Fisher. Snake is a spec-ops soldier, he was mainly dealing with infiltration by stealth then becoming a one man army.
Fisher is a SIGINT ninja, he really can never be seen and take on hordes of guys at once, he could, but that would probably be pointless given some of his missions (CIA HQ for instance).
But in anycase, while Fisher is a lot more realistic, I still like Snake just as much given the character and their differing abilities.

No but the "stealth beats all" is misleading--for all we know, "canon" MGS is Big Boss setting--can never be discovered. Truly, IMHO, we don't have enough data on their honest abilities in such an encounter to know which would win.weemadando wrote:You've played Splinter Cell I'm sure. Point being--who really cares how each would deal with the mech and how?

Snake is huncheed over a C-4 difusing it when he hears a small noise behind him. He whirls around pistol in hand and there is nothing there just an empty corridor. "Weird," Snake says. Above him in a split jump is Sam Fisher who drops to the floor as silent as death. Snake whirls around again just in time to focus on the silenced pistol aimed at his head. " Goodnight" says Sam as he walks away, leaving a corpse with no face.

Fisher pokes his head around a dark corner, looking for Snake. He dosnt see anything, but suddenly, a fist as hard as stone hammers into his nose. Fisher starts bleeding like a stuck pig, and realizes his nose is broken. Before he can do anything, more fists are landing on his head at an ungodly rate. He's never been hit harder or faster in his life. Finally, the figure kicks him in the teeth, breaking all of them. Bleeding all over, Fisher falls to the ground and starts whimpering like a small dog. Snake slowly presses his foot on Fisher's throat, and he starts coughing blood and gagging. Snake lights up a cigarette, inhales deeply, and blows smoke in Sam's face. "A friend once told me to never trust my life to a weapon." Snake paused for a moment to take another puff. "Someone should have told you the same thing." Snake finished the cigarette, and put it out on Fishers forehead. Fisher yelped and coughed up more blood. Snake picked up Fisher's broken body, and quickly broke his neck. Snake dropped the body. "Sweet dreams, Sammy." Snake walked off into the dark.
