Chuck Does Back to the Future

Chuck goes into the history of Back to the Future. Hihglights.

* One of the producers proposed changing the title to "Spaceman from Pluto" Steven Spielberg wrote a memo in reply thanking the producer for the joke memo.

* The script, like almost all films, went through several revisions. Early versions had the time machine as a stationary device which was built into a refrigerator. Another version had Marty McFly drive the DeLorean into a nuclear blast. (The plutonium used to power the time machine was retained from this version .)Marty and Doc Brown were video pirates in the first version, which the studios understandably changed. Chuck also pointed out that if the studio executives had the mindset of present-day studio executives, they would have insisted that Marty go back to the future via atomic bomb test.

* I have read the first and third drafts. In the first draft which had the refrigerator in the time machine), "present" day Biff was a police officer who shook down doc and Marty for a cut of their video pirating sales. The time machine used Coca-cola as a catalyst, Doc was gunned down by government agents looking for the plutonium he stole, and in the end, the "present" was changed with Doc having invented flying cars. In the third draft (where Marty drove the DeLorean to an atomic bomb test to go back to the future) , Lorraine had a crush on Biff, and said yes when he asked her to the dance, thus prompting Marty to do the space alien gag on Biff to get him to break the date. Also in the third draft, the DeLorean did not fly when it came back from 2015.

* because Michael J. Fox was filming Family Ties, his indoor scenes were filmed at night, and he filmed his daytime scenes during the weekend.

* Eric Stoltz (Caprica)was not the first choice (Fox was), but was chosen due to Fox's Family Ties commitment, he was hired. He was later fired because he did not do well in comedies.

* Stoltz filmed the following scenes: Marty visiting Hill Valley in 1955 for the first time, Marty's scenes in Lou's Diner, a scene in Doc Brown's mansion, and part of the mall scene.

* I loved the faux trailer for Jaws 19.

* George's trademark laugh at the beginning of the movie is heard again from his 2015 self in the sequel.
Spoiler
Normal bulletproof vests do not work against assault rifle bullets. But Doc did build a time machine into a DeLorean...
* Chuck makes some very great points about...
Spoiler
the 1985 altered by the events of the movie. The house looks nicer, but it is still the same house. While George is more ambitious, and likely had a career as an editor while writing short stories on the side, he did not publish his first novel until he was 47. And Dave (George's eldest son), while copying that ambition and being willing to do weekend work at the office, is still living with his parents. (and for all we know, he may still be working Friday evenings at Burger King while he develops his desired career.)

As Chuck pointed out, modern-day studio executives would have insisted on this.
