Re: Favorite Sci-fi Moments
From the same book-
'"Your Grace, My Lords and Ladies, Ladies and Gentlemen all," he announced in a ringing voice, "I give you Steadholder Harrington . . . and damnation to the Peeps!"
Or, from 'Ashes of Victory'-
He froze, hazel eyes flaring wide as they locked on the tall, slim figure in a blue-on-blue uniform identical to his own, and his mental grousing slithered to an incoherent halt. He could not possibly be seeing what he thought he was, a small, still voice told him logically. Only one woman had ever been authorized to wear the uniform of a Grayson admiral. Just as only one woman in the Grayson navy had ever carried a six-legged, cream-and-gray treecat everywhere she went. Which meant his eyes must be lying to him, because that woman was dead. Had been dead for over two T-years. And yet—
"I told you I wouldn't apologize," Benjamin IX told his senior military officer, and this time there was no amusement at all in his soft voice. Matthews looked at him, his eyes stunned, and Benjamin smiled gently. "It may be a little late," he said, "but better late than never. Merry Christmas, Wesley."
Matthews turned back to the lounge windows, still grappling with the impossibility of it all. One or two of the Marines and armsmen on the pad apron had made the same connection he had. Astonishment and disbelief were enough to yank even them out of their focused professionalism, and he saw them gaping at the tall woman with the short, curly hair. He knew he was doing exactly the same, but he couldn't help it, and he felt disbelief giving way to an exultant inner shout that threatened to rattle the bones of his soul like castanets.
"I know how much she meant to you and the rest of the Navy," Benjamin went on quietly beside him, "and I simply couldn't take this moment away from you."
"B-but how—? I mean, we all knew . . . and the newsies all said—"
"I don't know, Wesley. Not yet. I received the original dispatch from Trevor's Star over two weeks ago, and an encrypted message direct from her shortly after the Harrington came out of hyper and headed in-system, but they were both maddeningly brief. They didn't give many details, aside from the most important one: the fact that she was alive. I suppose she and Judah really ought to have gone through your channels instead of directly to me, but she was acting in her capacity as steadholder, not admiral, and she was right about the need to consider the political repercussions of her return before anything else. But do the details really matter?"
The Protector of Grayson's voice was very soft, and his eyes gleamed as he watched the tall, one-armed woman make her way towards the lounge lift, followed now by a major in Harrington green, another half dozen or so officers, and one burly senior chief missile tech in Manticoran uniform.
"Does anything really matter . . . besides the fact that she's come home again after all?"
I'm not ashamed to admit my eyes were leaking when I first read that.
Nor that I was grinning like the proverbial Cheshire Cat when earlier in the book, she found out about the name (and class designation) of the podnought that was to take her to Grayson.

Heheheh her reaction to the statue puts even that to shame
So I stare wistfully at the Lightning for a couple of minutes. Two missiles, sharply raked razor-thin wings, a huge, pregnant belly full of fuel, and the two screamingly powerful engines that once rammed it from a cold start to a thousand miles per hour in under a minute. Life would be so much easier if our adverseries could be dealt with by supersonic death on wings - but alas, Human resources aren't so easily defeated.

Re: Favorite Sci-fi Moments
Eccleston is truly a master of conveying emotion through the smallest changes in facial expression - I think my overall favourite moment of his Doctor is during his 'dinner in bondage' with Blon in 'Boom Town'. His reaction to the line "Only a killer would know something like that"...you see all the hurt, the guilt, the anger of what he did momentarily flare up through his usually calm exterior...Bedlam wrote: Dr Who - The Doctor is locked in a dark cell with the 'metaltron' he moves over to look at it, then that electronic heartbeat sound starts followed by "Doc-tor?" and suddenly he's screaming to be let out.
"You would make a good Dalek" Eccleston looks like you just punched him
He'll probably always be my favourite Doctor.
Yeah, I've always taken the subtext of the Birther movement to be, "The rules don't count here! This is different! HE'S BLACK! BLACK, I SAY! ARE YOU ALL BLIND!?

Ah, nuWho. How could I forget about that? Eccleston's 'no' speech at the end of 'Bad Wolf', Rose's 'You are tiny' scene in 'Parting of the ways', and Smith's 'Good men don't need rules. Today is not the day to find out why I have so many' in 'A good man goes to war' just for starters.

From NuWho for me it has to be "What I did, I did without choice, in the name of peace and sanity." The sheer awesomeness of realising John Hurt was playing the Doctor caused a considerable quantity of fanboy-ish exclamations at the time.
And his "great men are forged in fire...it is the privilege of lesser men to light the flames."

John Hurt as The Doctor.
Tom Baker as the Curator.
Dredd - "She's a pass"
Opening scene of Star Wars as seen by me aged 4 and a half in 1977 - mind blown.

'Burying you in my memory when you were The Doctor more than anybody else.' 'You were The Doctor on the day it wasn't possible to get it right.'
And, of course, 'We change history all the time. I'm suggesting something far worse.' 'Gentlemen, I've had four hundred years to think about this. I'm changing my mind!'.
'The Day of The Doctor' is lousy with worthy quotes, and there's the sequence where all of the Doctors show up...including the next one.

The moment in The Return of the Jedi, after the adrenaline of the final battle.
Luke burns his father, and looks into the flames, and the Force theme swells up. Hamill conveys a wistful sadness, a subdued happiness. The music ads so much to it, as well, it's like a sunrise after a really terrible night. Luke knows he's passed the ultimate test, and is a true Jedi, and he looks at what it has cost him, unflinching. It's a really subtle scene, I'm surprised Lucas left it in.
The moment at the end of Firefly where Inara comes so aching close to telling Mal how she feels... and then moves in exactly the opposite direction. It's like a knife in the heart, or missing a step.
"I learned something from Nandi, not just from what happened, but from her. The family she made, the strength of her love for them, it's what kept them together. When you live with that kind of strength, you get tied to it. You can't break away, and you never want to. There's something - there's something I should've done a long while ago. And I'm sorry, for both of us, that it took me this long. I'm leaving."
I'm not sure which part of the mass suffering in Armour of Contempt I like the most, but I think Caffran's terror - that he's so scared and sickened and confused, going into a firefight half trained that he wishes The Emperor was dead and wonders if he is the first soldier in combat ever to feel that way. That's just one small example from a book that seems well above the usual "Bolter-porn" style of Gaunt's Ghosts.
Battlestar galactica, season one - I've only just started watching it. The moment that stands out for me is when Adama's overzealous Inquisitor tries to implicate him in the Cylon infiltration, and orders the MPs to arrest him. Adama shows... balls. Sheer balls. He carries the loyalty of a man who has complete power over him in that moment through force of personality.
"Your orders are to escort Sergeant Hadrian to her quarters.
Make your choice, son."

Yeah, that "You know I really think you might."
I thought I was all awesomed out and then Tom Baker appears from nowhere. I mean, damn, that was definitely a surprise and a half.
Adama's quiet "Brace for contact old friend" int he miniseries always gives me the shivers. Olmos really sells the seriousness of what's coming in that one quiet line.
And his speech at the end? Epic.

Khan's 'let them meet static' and subsequent attack that rocks the Enterprise and her crew.
Obi-wan and Anakin's duel on Mustafar, just for that feeling of foreboding.
'Where's the goat?' In Jurassic Park. Moments later goat makes an unpleasant reappearance.
Riker's 'fire' in BOBW. Then it cuts to 'to be continued'. I hated that.
The 10th Doctor's regeneration.
Arnie's motorcycle chase in T2, complete with T-1000 walking out of the fiery wreckage of his truck.

Animorphs #50. The kids meet Visser Three One on somewhat even terms for the first time in four years the series was running.
Slowly out team formed a line. Grizzly. Gorilla. Tiger. Andalite. Hawk. Wolf.
Then James's team. Lion. Crocodile. Bobcat. Bull.
Then Craig's team. And Erica's.
Slowly, the visser's attention was caught. Maybe I imagined the look of fear that flitted across his enigmatic Andalite face as he surveyed our forces.
Maybe not.
But for the first time since this war had begun, it looked like a fair fight.

Another Doctor Who one. From Army of Ghosts: The Void sphere finally opens. Mickey prepares to defend Rose against whatever comes out...but what comes out is far worse than anything he's seen before. Four domes rise out of the opening, three bronze, one black. The Daleks have returned. And my mind has just been blown to absolute smithereens.

My favourite bit I think is just after that fight. None of Red Flight are space worthy and two more squadrons are moving to attack Wedge and Tycho. Except one of the squadrons has been training with Wedge and accepting his philosophy. So they challenge the genuinely hostile squadron to an impromptu duel allowing Wedge to escape.Eternal_Freedom wrote:Red Flight's four-versus-thirty fight in Starfighters of Adumar was pretty epic.
Purely because the four-versus-thirty fight was so awesome.

From X-wing, how about Isard's Revenge, the sheer 'oh crap moment' when enough torpedo launchers to ice even a super star destroyer lock on to Lusankya, which is only able to flee thanks to the noble sacrifice of an escort.
Followed by the big reveal that the targeting computers were a bluff, all the launchers were in freighters, slaved to Rogue Squadron's targeting computers.

Corrax Entry 7:17: So you walk eternally through the shadow realms, standing against evil where all others falter. May your thirst for retribution never quench, may the blood on your sword never dry, and may we never need you again.

Ah man, that can't be a favorite moment. It's like saying you love the end of Old Yeller. I did like all the misunderstandings about human sexuality on the show. Considering female Zentradi are elite troops, the back and forth between the 3 spies while watching the swimsuit competition was hilarious:phred wrote:The death of Roy Fokker in Macross/Robotech.
"Why do they wear armor that protects so little of their body?"
"Maybe those are the only vulnerable areas."
Galaxy Quest: Like, the entire movie. But the best for me was when Shaloub gets this look on his face and says "I just got a great idea" and the rock monster from the planet transports into the room with all the guards. Queue a massacre as they flee in terror while firing wildly behind them.
Innerspace: "You just digested the bad guy."

Maybe not favorite, but it's one that stuck with me for a long ass time after I saw it.TheFeniX wrote:Ah man, that can't be a favorite moment. It's like saying you love the end of Old Yellerphred wrote:The death of Roy Fokker in Macross/Robotech.
Galaxy Quest is up there with The 5th Element for me. there's no way to pick one moment form either of those movies that's far above the others enough to call the best.Galaxy Quest: Like, the entire movie. Re: Favorite Sci-fi Moments
I hear you. It was a pretty adult series for a young kid to watch. One that stuck with me (aside from the image of Roy hitting the floor with blood all over his back) was when Max's Veritech is going critical in the elevator of the Zentradi flagship. After they all bail-out and escape, some poor grunt walks up to the open elevator and is incinerated by the blast. The body evaporating in the flames and the scream are etched into my mind to this day. I don't think it was until Exosquad that American animation ever got that kind of stones for adult themes. Maybe Ren and Stimpy on the complete opposite end of the spectrum.phred wrote:Maybe not favorite, but it's one that stuck with me for a long ass time after I saw it.

Yeah, I've always taken the subtext of the Birther movement to be, "The rules don't count here! This is different! HE'S BLACK! BLACK, I SAY! ARE YOU ALL BLIND!?
