Economics in the Callixus Sector (40K)

Post by Imperial Overlord »

The Callixus Sector is the base setting for the 40K RPG Dark Heresy. It's located right next to the action in the Ravenor novels and there is quite a lot of information about in the RPG. Putting aside such interesting things as the Tyrantine Cabal, there is some interesting information about the economic workings of the sector that is covered in some detail.

1) Currency: The base currency in the Callixus Sector is called "Thrones". It's not an actual currency, but a measure of equivalent value. A number of currencies exist throughout the sector, depending on the planet and region in question. They all, however, have measurable value based on how much of their homeworld's Imperial Tithe they can purchase. The Imperial Tithe not only fuels the Imperium, but it in effect backs the value of local currency for the purposes of interstellar trade.

2) There are sector wide private trading organizations. They may deal in thrall labor or manufactured goods or whatever, but in order to function their needs to be enough civilian merchant ships to make the these sector sprawling affairs practical as well as the tithe ships that ship food to hive worlds and weapons to newly founded Guard regiments and the like.

In short we have considerable evidence of comparatively frequent interstellar travel and trade within the Callixus Sector. Each planet maybe a feudal kingdom of its own, but they are feudal kingdoms with busy port cities.

Not surprising that there's a moderate amount of trade. The Gothic Sector, IIRC consisting of under a hundred planets, was able to draft a thousand ships to serve as supply and transport vessels.

The Gothic Sector had a hundred major worlds and a large number of minor ones. It also contained one of the most important naval bases in the Segmentum while the Callixus system is at the fringes of Imperial space, near the Halo Stars. That Callixus supports a similar level of interstellar trade as the Gothic Sector is a nice confirmation that such activity is widespread and not just a feature of the most important sectors.
