Best SciFi Movie of 2000s - Nominations

Post by Balrog »

Yes, the decade is over, which means it's time to look back and see which science fiction movie was the best of its time.

But since there were a lot of scifi movies released in the last ten years, and I'm a lazy bastard, I'm gonna make you do all the work. :P Post your nomination for what you think ought to be labeled the best in this thread, and a voting thread will be created later for the final tally. The only rules (at the moment) are that your nomination must have been released between January 1, 2000 to December 31, 2009 and that your nomination must be seconded by another in this thread. Otherwise feel free to discuss anything related to the nominations in this thread.

And since I started this, I'm reserving the right to make my nomination later, and not because I haven't made up my mind yet...
'Ai! ai!' wailed Legolas. 'A Balrog! A Balrog is come!'
Gimli stared with wide eyes. 'Durin's Bane!' he cried, and letting his axe fall he covered his face.
'A Balrog,' muttered Gandalf. 'Now I understand.' He faltered and leaned heavily on his staff. 'What an evil fortune! And I am already weary.'

My personal favorite is Children of Men, if it even counts as sci-fi. So that's my nominee.

What SciFi movies HAVE there been anyway?

'No. No dating for the Batman. It might cut into your brooding time.'

'Hey, we both have a Martian's phone number on our speed dial. I think I deserve the benefit of the doubt.'
'You know, for a guy with like 50 different kinds of vision, you sure are blind.'

Oh, RotS is my nomination by the way. If only for the kind of cultural impact the franchise on a whole has had (though AotC sucked too much to get the nomination :P ).

OMG!!! That is FANTASY!!!

Being a complete fanboy, I have to second Iron Man.

Fanboyism aside... I would nominate Donnie Darko.
I would throw Watchmen out there, but it wasn't exactly ground breaking or anything and basically, like Iron Man, was just a very good adaptation.

I'm sure there are more, but that is a pretty good "get started" list.

The Matrix sequels and AOTC were too weak, but were sci-fi :D.
I nominate ROTS. There were critically better movies (meaning, movies that don't rely on "Wow, lightsabers!") such as Pitch Black, WALL-E, Star Trek (the new one :D), District 9, 9, Moon (which bored me a bit. It dragged)...
(Iron Man is more fantasy :P).

But seriously. It has a sci-fi aesthetic. That even I cannot deny. :)

I know, I was being sarcastic. People that don't classify Star Wars under Science Fiction, strike me as pretentious shits. :D

(Iron Man is more fantasy
The movie is about an engineer who builds a mechanical suit using fictional science with no magic or superpowers involved. In whatever classification you'd like to use, that's science fiction - unless you're one of those wankers who insists it needs to be 'socially relevant'.

I'd like to nominate Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind and anyone who says it's not SF can piss the fuck off.

Much as it pains me to say it as a Donnie Darko fanboy, Children of Men was probably the best sci-fi movie I saw in the last decade (caveat: I have not seen Moon yet).

I'm torn between Avatar and Watchmen. I liked both on account of the depth in the world and the attention to detail within the context of the subject matter. Watchmen was stronger in this regard, and I have to admit that I enjoyed the story a bit more. I'm going to let Avatar sit for a few more days, but I'll be going for one of these two.

If you'd asked me a while back, ROTS would probably have gotten my nomination, and it's still good (and deserves to be on the list for saving the franchise), but Watchmen and Avatar both impressed me.

Since Avatar is in, I'm going to go ahead and nominate Watchmen because, frankly, it's the best alternate history film that I think I've seen.

I'm all over that action.

Also I had totally forgotten that Cowboy Bebop: The Movie was released in the last decade. Admittedly thinking aobut when I first watched it makes me feel oooold, but those were good times.

I doubt this will get seconded since precisely three people probably saw it, but if you like science fiction, go ahead and watch The Man From Earth. It's a low-low-budget SF film based on Jerome Bixby's last work and consists, basically, of a group of scientists sitting in a room talking; but the premise, acting, and stellar writing makes it all worthwhile.
