Which War of the Worlds, Red? I think there were at least two different adaptations in the last decade, but I only saw one of them.

There's the Speilberg / Cruise version, and some other B-grade one that came out around the same time. I don't mean low quality, I wouldn't know because I haven't seen it. But it was low budget if I recall correctly, and had minimal distribution so I doubt anyone has seen it.

Children of Men really impressed me as a believable dystopia in the nearby future. But I'll nominate V for Vendetta because nobody mentioned it yet.

Could I get an explanation on The Dark Knight being science fiction? Batman Begins felt like it was more in that vein, but The Dark Knight always felt more crime drama-ish than sci-fi. It's probably a valid pick, but I'm just wondering.

One or two pieces of technology that would probably be within the grasp of our present day tech to figure out doesn't qualify it as Sci-Fi. TDK should not be on this list. If you want Sci-Fi comic book adaptations you have Iron Man, Watchmen and Hulk.

For what it's worth, comic books and comic book adaptations are eligible for both the Hugo and Nebula awards (The Dark Knight was nominted for Best Script for both of them, though it won neither). Generally, since the boundaries between sci-fi, fantasy, and comics are so blurred, they're all counted together for "Best of..." lists and awards and the like, precisely to avoid arguments like "TDK isn't sci-fi because...". Of course, there are more specific lists, but they typically define their criteria ahead of time.

That's what I was thinking about as well when including comic book movies RedImp, though a more restrictive definition would lead to a tighter, more manageable list. For the moment I'll leave Batman on the list, and ask if people want a more definite list of prerequisites for a movie to be considered SciFi, or to leave it up to the person's discretion? And of course we can always split it between comic/non-comic movies as suggested in the beginning.

For me personally I think Avatar narrowly beats out Sky Captain, but if we're naming movies as bland as I, Robot then certainly A.I.: Artificial Intelligence deserves mention for being really pretty.

I have to second Titan A.E. Any movie with a reverse Death Star has got to at least be in the running. I don't know if I would rank it higher than the 800 pound gorilla of Sci-Fi awesomeness that is ROTS, but I would definitely rank Titan A.E. above Serenity and Chronicles of Riddick. Obviously I like even bad space opera better than most other Sci-Fi movies. I must admit to loving the retro pulp Sci-Fi that is Sky Captain and the World of Tomorrow too.

Hollywood in what sense? The Hero died at the end. That seemed pretty Unhollywood to me.

And I really like Deja Vu as a movie; its well acted; exciting; good action and not a bad premise and its over very well presented. Its just the time travel makes no sense. If Washington was around to set up all those clues the first time; then the girl couldn't have died the first time.

Edit to clarify: It makes no sense but it making no sense doesn't really harm my enjoyment of the film. Hence the nomination. I don't pretend to like films solely for good science.

I'll go ahead and second Serenity. My favorites on the list so far are Children of Men and Moon.
