When will they ever learn not to trust any Zentradi that comes from the Kamjin stock?

Wow.

Zentran Commander: I guess we'll have to *BDZ the place.
Girl arrives in speaker-pod Valkyrie and the guns drop.

*Well, exaggerated, but at least it's orbital bombardment.

They were preparing to use the main batteries of their ship, but it was landed, so not quite 'orbital'. The rebel Zentradi had nukes, which they were apparently happy to use at point blank range.

The ship shown was a Queadol-Magdomilla Class command battleship, which seperates into two sections; one that remains in orbit, another that goes atmospheric for direct assaults. But yeah, it was implied in the episode that they would use the landed ship's guns.

Man, that is a totally awesome shot.

I wonder if it's really the Macross. Wasn't it decomissioned and chilling in Lake Global last we saw it at the end of Macross Plus? It's either alien trickery or something funky happened in the 12 years since Plus that they're neglecting to tell us.
Even though all it does is act as a kilometre high statue to awesomeness, the Macross can still actually fly, and still has ammunition. All things considered, the only thing it shouldn't be able to do is fold, but they can build fold drives. And that said, it's still fairly capable for its weight class.

Obviously it's still unusual, but it could reasonably happen. You know, if Bruno J. Global wanted to go hotrodding around the galaxy or soemthing, I'm sure he'd do it in the Macross.

Yeah, the how of it is pretty easy, it's the why that's a mystery. Namely why such a famous and historically relevant ship would be abandoned in the middle of nowhere. It almost has to do with the NUN's continuing effort to keep a lid on the Vajra's existence, and it's pretty obvious there's some on Galia IV (which the SDF-1 may be there to contain).

It didn't seem terribly happy about taking off in Plus. The repeated beating it took in the series probably did irreperable structural damage, to the point that it was almost certainly better to build new ships (as was done) than try and restore the old girl again.

Are reaction warheads nukes like the ones in use today?

Unlikely. Reaction technology wouldn't be such a big deal if it was just nuclear fusion/fission. My guess is that it's exotic matter annihilation of some kind.

The ones used in Space War 1 were. The ones in use later in the series are new and more impressive technology.

It's probably been mentioned in this thread already, but they originally called them reaction warheads because the word nuclear in the context of a weapon still left a bad taste in the japanese mouth... Still does, come to that(NGE N2 mines??)

It's still retarded. Remember that, after ASS-1, reaction technology was the whole reason the Zentradi were interested in Earth in the first place. An interstellar, FTL-capable race with enough power to slag whole planets, baffled by the mysteries of the atom. Right.

The Zentradi couldn't even repair their own ships. Not even patching holes in the hull. Their last automated factories that produced nukes stopped working, no-one could get them going again. They weren't designed to know how the technology worked or be able to repair it, because the Protoculture had always anticipated being around to do that, but it didn't work out that way.

In the original series, Reaction Weapons explicitly were nuclear, but having the heroes using something explicitly called nuclear weapons was still beyond the pale on Japanese TV. According to Word Of God, more access to Zentradi technology allowed newer more efficient warheads to be developed.

And that left them ripe for enslavement by the Mardook, yes?

No.
MacrossII is the sequel to DYRL, and is a work of fiction within Macross canon.

I imagine most of the burning questions about Macross will be answered in the new Macross Chronicle book. It's a new subscription type deal where you get pages to fill in a binder included with the first issue.

It will have:

Code: Select all

1) Mechanic Sheet
Starting with the Valkyries, information and explanation of the mecha. The main mecha illustration will be an original illustration each issue.

2) Character Sheet
From the main to minor characters, profiles of all characters.

3) Time Line Sheet
The first printed timeline for all Macross series.

4) World Guide Sheet
Pick-up on the Culture, Settings, and Planets of the Macross World.

5) History Sheet
With original illustrations mixed in, descriptions and explanations of things that happened in Macross.

6) Technonogy Sheet
A close look at the different technology in Macross.

7) Song Sheet
Featuring “Songs” of Macross. Lyrics and liner notes.

8) Gallery Sheet
Visuals of Macross posters and CD jackets on a fold-out sheet.

9) Goods Sheet
From the rare to the newest Macross-related goods.

10) Terminology Dictionary Sheet
Terms and Descriptions of words used in all Macross Series

11) Tribute Sheet
Illustrations and Interviews based on Macross by creators currently working in the industry.

12) Making Sheet

Yeah so I was wrong about a lot of things. It wasn't the Macross and the monorail squirrel is a baby Varja. This episode will leave you asking more questions.
