Now we start with Space marine codex.. circa 3rd edition (about 1996-1999 or thereabouts I believe.. I'm too lazy to check now. This is part one.

Page 2
Sol pattern monomolecular edge close combat Weapon
EG knife. As we know SM weapons are monomol, although that term may be functionally meaningless aside from "its very fucking sharp."

Page 2
Auspex - Mk XXIX remote scanner
hand held, comparatively implied to be bigger than a hand grenade, compareable to the blade of the knife in length.

Sometimes auspex is handheld, sometimtes its built into the armor in some fashion.

Page 2
998. Model Bolter; Godwyn Pattern Ammo counter, Sinister/Dexter Locking Mechansim sickle Magazine.
Good ol' Astartes bolter.

Page 2
M.37 Backpack Power unit

..

[details listed on armour]

Thermal waste dissipators [little rounded knobs that look like thrusters sticking out above the shoulders of the backpack.

..

Sub-atomic core [center of pack]

power plant venting [four pipes, two to a side, sticking out of the side of the pack]
Astartes backpack powerplant details. Rather small cooling ports suggests its either very efficient or it relies on some sort of coolant venting method. either is possible.

"sub atomic core" may suggest technologies similar to melta weapons (meltabombs, etc.) Intermediate between nuclear and non nuclear power sources.

Page 2
Adeptus Astartes Mk 7 Codex Power Armour (Imperator Armour)

- Auto responsive Shoulder Plates (the huge pauldrons. I'm guessing they provide head protection when firing from a sideways-on stance)

- Bonded Ceramite/Plasteel Outer Skin [pointing to kneepads]

- Reinforced Greaves incorporating Gyroscopic Stabilisers [pointing to Greaves - duh]

- Life Signs monitor [mounted on forearm portion of gauntlet]

- Power cables (armoured)
Astartes armor features.

PAge 2
ML40- Targeter (includes auto-sense link)

- Sol pattern monomolecular edge close combat weapon.
Again targeter (scope) and a monomolecular blade.

Page 3
The first attack destroyed Kethra's two orbiting weapon stations, with a crew of nearly 15,000 men.
Each orbital station (a defensive platform at least) had 7500 men approx I'd guess.

Page 3
Having established orbital supremacy, they despatched Thunderhawks and drop pods to various points on the planet's surface, calculated to provoke an attack by the Kethran defence forces. Despite their vast advantage in numbers the attacking forces were annihilated piecemeal by the White Pathers over a period of a few days and nights of incessant conflict.

..

..the White Panthers returned to their battle barge and left without further word.
They also wiped out everyone at the governor's palace (top officers included) and destroyed the armoury. Its worth guessing there may have been a company or two of troops, and their orbitla superiority and orbital attack ability probably gave them the huge advantage here.

Effective if brutal.

Page 3
Whether Kethra will be sufficiently recovered to provide its tithe within the next year is a matter for the Administratum. The point I wish to raise is thta the proper applicaiton of force could have resolved the entire affair without destroying the military strength of Kethra and leaving the world vulnerable to alien attack. I regret that the Officio Assasinorum did not respond to my request earlier when their Adepts could have easily ended the whole affair quickly and quietly.
Some people don't always think the Astartes are the best answer. I imagine it depends on the Chapter, of course. Then again the Imperial guard would be worse.

Page 3
While the warriors of the Adeptus Astartes as ever, showed credible skill, determination and unswerving loyalty to the Emperor, unleashing them against any Imperial world is to use an ultimate force exceeded only by that of Exterminatus. It is not as if this incident is without precedent, indeed on many occasions Space Marines have pursued their own campaigns without reference or remit to the authority of the Adeptus Terra.
The Space Marines are considered second in devastation only to Exterminatus. Unless we factor in orbital bombardment (in which case we could include the Navy) I kinda doubt this. I mean the Guard tends to use a fuckload more artillery.

Page 3
To think that there are a thousand Chapters, each a thousand-strong, of these warriors poised to strike anywhere in the galaxy fills me with reassurance and dread in equal measure.
Bog standard "million space marine" approximation.

Page 4
Return fire from the Orks lashed at the Space Marines. Tracer fire and screaming shells filled the air, ricocheting off their armour and forcing them to struggle forward as if into the teeth of a storm.
Ork fire ricochets off Astartes armor.

Page 4
Brother Beliasus was struck square in the chest. Flecks of melted ceramite sprayed across his face plate and icons across his helmet display flickered warning orange as his armour struggled to keep him upright. It failed and he went down on one knee. Not two yards away Brother Eveay fell with two fist-sized holes through his abdomen, his bright blood mixing with the dark earth.
The devastators shortly blast a buidling to pieces and fire becomes more sporadic. Ork fire knocks one Marine to his knees although his armor tries to keep him stabilized, the other gets two holes blased through him.

Page 4
The greenskin disappeared under the hail of explosive bolts and Beliasus boosted the power to his legs to lope forward and regain his place in the battleline.
Power armor "strength" to arms and legs is adjustable. Probably allows for greater bursts of speed or strength.

Page 4
His armour hadn't been the same since the insurrection on Lannis IX five years ago. THe armour had never truly recovered its spirit since the injury and the replacement parts ere weaker and slower than the old ones. The Tech-Priests had lost so much knowlege, they simply didn't make things like they used to.
Possible, but debatable, considering the AdMech seem to gain and lose in equal measure depending on the source and author. In this case, it would seem that the equipment becomes less effective . Of course its the AdMech and they dont share the reasons why they do stuff, its quite possible the armour changed in quality simply to reflect some other benefit (easier to repair or maintain, lighter weight, cheaper to build, etc.) It's not neccesarily consistent across the board.

Page 4
A horde of Orks spilled out of the shattered buildings like a green tied, beyond them their crude artillery unleashed another salvo. At such close range it was devastating, fire and smoke exploded all about and Beliasus felt his helm ring like a bell as red-hot shrapnel ricocheted off it. Julo fell with a curse, his arm torn away at the elbow.

..

Even Julo managed ot heft his bolter in his remaining hand and open fire. Every shot punched another howling Ork off its feet but they raced forward oblivious to casaulties...
Arm gets torn away and the Marine still manages to fire one handed, the impacts (not sure whether its explosive element or the kinetic one) knocking Orks off their feet.

Page 4
A section of wall collapsed inward and a massive, hulking form crunched in ove rthe rubble. It stood twice the height of a man and was so bulky and heavily armoured that it looked more like a walking tank than an armoured suit. Without breaking stride it raised the multi-barreled cannon set into the angled plates of its arma nd opened fire on the Orks.
SM dreadnought.

Page 7
Librarians use their psychic powers to unleash devastating attacks, as well as augmenting their own physical prowess.
They can improve physical performance (speed/strength) psychically as well as employing direct attack.

PAge 8
Termiantros often spearhead the Space Marines' attacks, blowing apart the enemy at range, before crushing them in a final, ruthless assault.
Not sure which weapons are "blowing apart" the enemy, if we take this literally.

Page 10
They [Tacitcal Marines] are versatile fighters, able to speed forward in a Rhino and fight the enemy in close combat, or stay back and give supporting fire with their heavy weapons. It is the Tactical Squad's ability to fufill a number of widely differing roles that makes the Space MAriens so effective, whatever combat situation they find themselves in.
Tactical Marines, it would seem, have organic Rhino support.

Page 12
Bike squadrons are often used for reconnaissance missions into enemy held territory.
And skirmishing, as I recall. That's why they carry weapons.

Page 12
When fielded as squadrons they [attack bikes]] are highly mobile units with enough firepower ot destroy even the largest enemy units or blow apart tanks with their short-ranged multi-meltas.
Bike equivalent of a heavy weapons trooper.

Page 13
The Tornado is even more heavily armed than the standard land speeder. Able to carry a combination of anti-personnel and anti-tank weaponry, the Tornado often acts as a mobiel reserve - dashing forward to exploit weaknesses in the enemy or bolstering the Space MArines' attack where they mot need it.
Land Speeder varient and mobile firepower.

Page 13
Typhoon missiles are simply a larger version of the frag missiles fired by a normal missile launcher. They are excellent weapons to use against enemy infantry and light vehicles, but lack the strength to deal with more heavily aroured enemy vehicles and troops.
Land Speeder variant equipps this missile launcher.

Page 14
Devastator squads combine the flexibility of the infantrryman with the firepower of a tank. Able to take up commanding firing positions on high outcrops or in dense jungle..
Missile launchers it seem pack anti-tank firepower, at least potentially.

Page 14
The Predator tank can be configured in a number of different ways. The Annihilator optimises the Predators tank-hunting capabilities with its multiple lasercannons. Alternatiely, it may be armed with heavy bolters i nthe sponsons to give it a powerful punch against infantry and light vehicles, while its turret-mounted tankbusting lascannon deals iwth any armoured foes it encounters.
Various Predator configurations.

Page 14
The Desturctor is perfectly suited to destroying swathes of enemy light vehicles and infantry with its autocannon and heavy bolters. Alternatively, when fitted with lascannons, it can prove more than a match for even the heaviest armoured vehicles in the opposing army.
Yet more predator configurations.

Page 15
Able to launch its attacks even when out of sight, behind a hill or jungle, often the only evidence of a Whirlwind's presence is its first payload of death roaring down from the skies.
Whirlwinds have indirect ifre capability, with the implied range therein.

Page 31
The ultramarines deployed in Ferrus formation as planned, thirty armoured figures debouching onto the grey, dusty surface in six seconds. The Gunship's engines screamed back to life and with a blast of heat and dust it was gone, angling up and back to join the cold stars of the firmament above.
Ultramarines manage to deploy off gunship in seconds.

Page 31
Karrack saw bodies leap and contort as the mass-reactive rounds blew them apart, their blood billowing out in clouds of scarlet frost.
Bolter rounds blowing apart bodies.

Page 32
Note that although this [Artificer] armour gives the same protection as Terminator armour, items that are 'Terminators only' cannot be used with it.
Protective quality of artificer armour (high quality armour)

Page 32
Bionics allow a Space Marine who has suffered a crippling injury to return to service, but are unlikely to improve or enhance his abilities. However there is a chance an attack or shot will hit a bionic part causing less damage.
One of the benefit of bionics, even the non-augmenting type.

Page 32
The Cyclone is a specially designed missile launcher that can be used by Space Marines in Terminator armour. The weapon in the Terminator's left hand is replaced with a special targeting device which allows him to fire the Cyclone and his storm bolter...

..

The Cyclone otherwise counts as a missile launcher with frag and krak missiles.
Cyclone missile launcher. The targeting device is interesting. Some osrt of laser guidance?

Page 33
All Chaplains wear a rosarius, a small amulet bestowed upon them by the Ecclesiarchy of Terra. The rosarius generates a small energy field...
Magic shield.

Page 33
The signum is a special form of commuincation device that allows the Techmarine to access a myraid of useful battlefield targeting information, and then pass it on to his fellow battle brothers.
Sharing targeting data, basically.

Page 33
A storm shield is a small metal shield that has an energy field generator built into it. The energy field is too small to be of much use against ranged attacks, but is very useful in close combat.
Minaly used by Terminators with thunder hammers.

Page 33
Thunder Hammers release a terrific blast of energy when they strike an opponent.
Power weapon with a pulsed energy output rather than sustained.

Page 34

The Gauntlets of Ultramar. May give us a rough benchmark of the capabilities of power weapons in general.

Page 34
But fame and glory ever begets jealousy and spite, and these heroic tales, fuelled by Marneus' fierce (and some say intractable) pride, have earned him and his brethren many high-ranking enemies. While I can find no direct evidence, it seems probable that these enemies engineered the now infamous Court of Inquiry into Marneus' actions during the suppression of the uprising on Colony Beta/54 where Marneus was quite rightly exonerated of all charges, (if his excellency will allow me to put forward my own, very humble, opinion).
Not everyone loves Marneus Calgar.

Page 34
Calgar eliminated a rebel army led by General Dornal in a thirty day batlte on the industrial world of Knarts Landing. Ultramarine casualties in the engagement were less than 17%
This seems to be considered "low" casualty rates for Space Marines. Note also reference to "industrial world".

Page 34
Calgar acted as supreme commander in the defence of Ichar IV, a vital industrial world on the Eastern Fringe. Tyranid invaders from Kraken Hivefleet were held in chck by the combined efforts of Space Marines, Imperial Guard, and alien Eldar forces.
Ichar IV. Again, industrial World. And Alliance with the Eldar.

Page 36
"And so it came to pass that the noble Lord Calgar was approached by Tigurius - most esteemed of his warrior-oracles, who was skilled with shot, blade and farseeing all equally.
Librarian with "far-seeing" abilities.

Page 37
Despite suffering seventeen wounds, including a stabbing owund puncturing one of his hearts, and two serious wounds from enemy heavy weapons, Captain Cortez managed to break through Eldar lines and complete his mission successfully.

..

Captain Cortez defended the breach in Fortress Maladon's wall for twenty one hours of constant fighting despite overwhelming odds and the loss of his whole squad to several enemy attacks.

..

Captain Cortez fought through the entire Kardian six week campaign without supplies after they had been lost to enemy fire during deployment. He attributed his survival to the Emperor's benevolence which nourished his body better than any food or drink would have.
[/quote]

Remarkable feats of endurance even for a Space MArine.

[quote="Connor MacLeod]This seems to be considered "low" casualty rates for Space Marines. Note also reference to "industrial world".[/quote]Perhaps it was considered low because it was below the expected level of acceptable casualties when taking into account the level of resistance.

An engagement of lesser intensity would have fewer expected casualties, and vice versa.

That's not all Cortez has managed in that line - Spoiler
During the battle for New Rynn Spaceport, his response to having his right arm torn off by a particularly massive ork, was to jump on the thing's back - hanging on and climbing it by sheer leg power - and shove a krak grenade down its throat. And his reply when Chapter-Master Kantor points out the lost arm? "I haven't lost an arm, Brother. It's right over there *indicates arm lying 20ft away*"

I think factoring orbital power is the key here. Their ships tend to dedicated planetary attack weaponry such as bombardment cannons and cyclonic torpedoes and they aren't as bound by the Imperial bureaucracy, interservice rivalry (they're all battle brothers of the same chapter) and chain of command, giving them a much freer hand to unleash mass destruction if they believe it is called for.

Second and final part of Codex Space Marines 3rd edition.

Page 39
It is said that they [Astartes] do not worship the Benevolent Emperor as the God he is, but instead give their praise to him only as the founder of the Imperium and their creator. As if this was not heinous enough a crime against His Most Holy Emperor, they commit yet more heresy. Not only do they worship the Emperor, blessed be He for all eterntiy, but they also raise their voices in prayer to their Primarchs with equal vigour. They offer up praise for the founding of their Chapter, and the gift of the gene-seed from their Primarch which sustains them.

The manner of this praise takes a different form in every Chapter, although Chapters with a common genealogy will often adhere to similar beliefs and traditions. In many cases, these rites are barbaric in the extreme. Sacrifice is not uncommon in many Chapters, with the warriors proving their martial prowess agianst various bestial adversaries in bloody combat. THe exhcange of blood between the Space Marines is also a frequent occurance, particularily those Chapters which have descended fromthe original Blood Angels Legion. Captured banners are paraded, the heads of defeated foes exhibited and the manner of their capture or efeat recalled with grim detail and fascination. In all matters religious, the Space Marines emphasise their own prowess and conquests, giving thanks ot the Emperor and their Primarch for bestowing them with their martial gifts.

Some Chapters' practices date back from their founding, and are laid upon the foundations of heathen beliefs practised on their home planets. Ritual scarring, tattooing, and the daubing of paint on the body are common themes amongst the Chapters which draw their recruits from teh semi-civilised worlds of the Imperium.

...

The beliefs of the Chapters are perpetuated by its Chaplains. These fierce devotees to the Chapter's cult lead the prayers and rituals, and exhort their comrades to acts of valour on the battlefield. I was unable to converse witha ny Chaplains directly, but they are said to be ferocious individuals; of fiery heart and temperment; quick to anger but also watchful of the souls of their battle brothers. Though the Chaplains are given a miraculous Rosarius to show the bond between them and the Ministorum, it is my belief that any connection between that of their practises and our own noble establishments is faint, if not non-existent.
That the Astartes do not wholly follow the Imperial cult is no surprise, considering their history predates the Ecclesiarchy by a rather substantial margin, and the Chapters have their roots int he Legions, which all came about in a time of "logic and reason."

Page 42
Fleet Command:

Unknown how the fleet command complements break down or if they are pure astartes.

Comment: rumours of 'Red Thirst' and 'Black Rage' still perpetuate, despite investigation on numerous occasions.
Blood Angels recruitment and implanation practices seem to be considered atypcial and wrong. Their flaws are unknown "despite investigation"

Legion astartes daily rituals (summarised)

1 hr prayer (0400) - relics displayed and loyalty oaths repeated. Captain addresses the marines, issues orders, makes announcements and deals punishments.

2 hours firing rites (0500-0700) - emphasis is on Marine's own personal weapons but a variety of weapons are used.

5 hours of Battle practice (0500-1200) At this time geared towards hand to hand and close quarter fighting. Includes live fire excerises and simulated battle conditions in both lethal and nonlethal enviroments. One reason why Fortress monasteries favour inhospitable areas (arctic, volcanic, corrosisve, swamp, carnivorous jungle, or combinations)

1 hr for more prayer (1200-1300) During extended battle practice in field prayer may be utilised, possibly during live fire training. Injured may be transported for medical attention.

15 minutes to eat (1300-1315) - First meal of the day. Often includes substances inedible to normal humans or local lifeform hunted during batlte practice.

1 hr, 45 min Tactical indoctrination: Hypnotherapy and psycho-conditioning used for fast assimilation of Chapter tactical doctrines on various subjects. This can include new battle langauges, and the study of new alien weaponry, troops, and vehicles. Squad and company tactical reviews, and post-battle lessons learned are examined.

5 hours of more battle practice (Afternoon) (1500-2000) Emphasizes squad and company level tactics and reinforcement of tactical indoctirnation segment. Specialist squads (Assault and Devastaotr)practice their skills while Tactical marines work with dreadnoughts and vehicles.

1 hr prayer for evenings (again) (2000-2100) time for contemplation and thanksgiving for daily lessons. Gene seed sampling may be undertaken at this point as it has now been fully stimulated by the day's activities. [Important lesson there, as it indicates gene-seed does evolve/learn/grow from the activities/training of its recipient, which apparently adds to the gene-seed itself. One rason why they don't immediately remove it from a trooper]

30 minutes for evening meal (2100-2130) - more sedate, and more substantial intake of food provided by Chapter Serfs (under eye of Lord of the Household). meal consists of protein rich food, especially to younger marines. Indulgent Chapter Masters may even permit alcohol if days activities were well done.

1 hr, 45 minutes night fighting exercise. Chapters that have no "night" per se, or onboard ship will instead practise underwater combat, or zero g combat, or in dense fog or smoke or other exotic conditions.

30 min Maintenance rituals (2315-2345) All Marines maintain their own gear. Seriously damaged stuff gets sent to Master of the Forge. Marines geneally are kept with te same set of equipment after receiving it to "develop a close bond and understanding of the machine spirits they will rely on in battle." although its liklier that familiarity with the quirks and feel of the gear, and the fact the gear is fitted to that particular trooper, play more significant roles.

15 minutes free time (2345-0000) Some Chapter masters consider this unwarranted luxury, or a distraction, but is laid down in the Codex so most chapters allow it for tradition. Guilliman supposeldy included it on the words "Consider [the] magnitude of your duty at your leisure, but act without hesitation when [action] is required." - generally just more time for contemplation and essnetially prayer.

4 hours sleep (0000-0400) Space Marines don't really NEED sleep due to their implants -they can rest half their brain at a time while maintainng awareness. But prolonged lack of sleep does impact the Marine's circadian rhythms and increases the risk of personality disorders. So rather than sleep the Space Marines go into a fugue state.

Longest recorded incident without sleep by Marines was the Crimson Fists on Rynn's world, where Master Kantor remained active for a period of 328.7 standard hours (over 13 1/2 days)

Codex Space MArines, 4th edition, from 2004. This will be done in a single update, and it will be the last one for this thread. Next time, I'll be starting a whole new thread and probably just link to the last one for continuity sake. Anyhow, enjoy.

Page 2
Give me a hundred Space MArines. OR failing that give me a thousand other troops. - Attributed to Rogal Dorn, Primarch of the Imperial Fists
ususal "space marines equal to 10 men)

Page 2
Beside him, Pasanius's flamer seared a clutch of aliens as they attempted to scale their dead.

..

He dropped from the firing step and sprinted towards the breach in the lines, firing his bolt pistol as he ran. The explosive shells blasted apart a handful of the creatures as he burst amongst the rest like a thunderbolt, slashing left and right with furious strokes of his power sword.
Bolt pistol "blasting apart creatures.

Page 4
These were the Primarchs, twenty extraordinary individuals who would be his generals - grret leaders who would conquer thousands of worlds in his name. Each Primarch would have powers and skills beyond those of any other wariror, rivalling even those of the Emperor himself.
Primarch fluff.

Page 4
Mustred into the great, ,ten thousand strong Legions of the First founding, they were warrios of immense strength and unbrekable willpower, with an unflinching loyalty to the Emperor.
10,000 men per legion again. Downgrade from earlier sources.

Pafe 4
World after world was reconquered, alien oppressors routed or annihilated with the taint of the Warp cleansed with apocalyptic orbital barrages.
Warp threats exterminatus'ed - basically.

Page 8
The Codex is not enforced - indeed it is debatable whether any force exists that could do so - and there are many Chpaters, such as the Blood Angels and Spac EWolves, whose organisation varies from its teachings to a greateror lesser extent. It can be promoted though, and successive foundings have mostly favoured the Ultramarines' gene-seed and created new Codex Chapters from their line. The history of the Imperium is stained by periods of anarchy and warfare, and it is therefore difficult to track every Chapter's history and origins. All that is known is that there are approximately a thousand Chapters in existence today, scattered throughout the Galaxy. Of these, more than half are descended from the Ultramarines.
the "roughly a thousand chapters bit" althought he fact they can only hint at or influence codex adherence is interesting. Gene Seed control seems not sufficient threat to do so.

Page 9
A fortress monastery provides a fixed base where a Chapter can train its battle brothers and maintain its armoury and Librarium. As the nam eimplies, fortress-monasteries are heavily protected with void shields, batteries of defence lasers and missile silos, as well as local defence systems.
Fortress Monasteries described in basic.

Page 9
The Chapter will defend its homeworld against all threats and will often act in defence of the entire sub-sector.
This means, in principle, a Space Marine Chapter exerts control over a whole sub-sector.

Page 9
The power of a Space Marine Chpater is beyond imagining and not lightly do they make war, for they are not subject to Imperial rule, and are effectively autonomous fighting forces. An Imperial Commander must petition the Master of the Chapter for aid if he desires these superhuman warriors to fight alongside his own armies. Space Marines may also fight to honour ancient oaths or long-standing pacts with those they have sworn brotherhood with. Or, in some cricumstances, they keep their own counsel as to where and when they will make war, often guided by the prescient visions of their Librarians.
Space Marine autonomy and operational methods.

Page 9
However not all Space Marine Chapter maintain a fixed fortress-monastery, operating from mobile star fortresses or powerful fleets, such as the Imperial Fists or Black Templars. Some of these Chapters are often referred to as Crusaders, as they take the battle into the territory of Humanity's enemies...
The fortress monasteries of Chapters like the Imperial Fists or Black Templars are morbile, and apparently far bigger than normal starships. The blood Ravens are probably another "Crusader" Chapter.

PAge 9
Spacee Marines are the greatest warriors that Humanity has ever produced, and each Chapter maintains battlefleets that are integrgal to their way of war and capable of razing an entire planet to a barren, lifeless wasteland. The largest vessel in the Space Marine fleet is the battle barge and it is comparable in fighting power to a battleship of the Imperial Navy. This massively powerful vessel can transport up to four Companies of Space MArines along with their tanks and thunderhawk gunships. It can deliver powerful, sustained bombardments and is able to punch its way trhough oribtal defenses to deliver its deadly cargo.
Space Marines have "battlefleets" implying they control around scores to hundreds of ships (variable) - depending on how one defines a battlefleet. Batltefleet has power enough to render a planet totally uninhabitable in undefined timeframe. Battlebarges comparable in fighting ability to battleships, which contradicts BFG a bit.

Battle Barges can also cary up to four companies, which IIRC differs from BFG again. It may be simply that Battle Barges are not a set starship class and can vary in design and complement, however, rather than outrgith contradiction.

Page 9
More numerous are the strike cruisers, fast and well armoured vessels tht can carry a full Company of space Marines, their vehicles and gunships. Like the battle barge, a strike cruiser is also able to deliver short but intensive planetary bombardments.
Strike cruisers/

Page 9
Though these mighty vessels are the most powerful craft avialable to the Chapter, numerous other vessels, such as frigate and destroyer class ships also make up a Space Marine battlefleet.
Space Marine escorts, and again Astartes 'battlefleet"

Page 9
Once the Space Marines fleet has punched through to the planet of their enemy, they seek to deliver a decisive blow as quickly as possible, since they are not numerous and can normally expect to be outnumbered. There are three main tactics by which the Space Marines utiilise to destroy their foes, the most brutal of which is the orbital assault, known to the few that have survived such an attack as 'death from above'. The Space Marines drop into action in the wake of a devastating orbital bombardment, using drop pods and Thunderhawk gunships. With paralysing suddenness, they surgically destroy their targets, leaving the enemy leaderless and disorganised, incapable of anything except surrender or flight.

If the Space Marines are able to land heavy equipment, an equally destructive tactic is the armoured spearhead. Manoeuvring at speed, behind a far-ranging screen of bikes and land speeders, the Space Marines smash their powerful tanks unerringly against hte weak link in the enemy army, armoured columns slashing left and right before powering on into the foe's vitals.

When the theatre of operations offers the room, Space Marine forces can drop or infiltrate behind the front lines and launch a series of daring raids. The enemy reals from dozens of perfectly placed blows, clumsily lashing out at the Space Marines only to miss and be attacked again. There comes a point, exhausted and crippled, that even the mightiest army collapses, whereupon the Space Marines fall on them, like wolves upon the fold, to deliver the kiling stroke.
Space Marine orbital assualt doctrines. Note that despite their individual superiority, they seem not to prefer head on tactics or prolonged fights, given their limited numbers (and probably limited supply.)

Page 10
When a Chapter selects a potential recruit for training they accept a new son into their family, and it is fitting, therefore, that they take the greatest care in his selection. Each Chapter recruits in its own way, be it by competition, scrutiny under adversity or the most sacred rituals. However, a Chapter can have but a thousand battle brothers and each recruit represents a critical use of its resources.
Chapter recruitment.

Page 10
The Chapter Apothecaries examine their flesh down to the cellular level to ensure that they are free of the taint of mutation and strong enough to survive the training. The Chapter's Librarians probe their minds for the slightest sign of corruption or weakness and, most vital of all, their warrior spirit is gauged by the Chapter Chaplains to ensure they are worthy of the Chapter's trust.
Examinations prospective AStartes recruits must undergo.

Page 11
Some implants require hypnotic stimuli or chemical therapy to mature and require the most stringent monitoring and testing regime to develop properly
Additional training or measures taken with certain implants (EG bone and msucle growth).

Page 11
As a Neophyte receives the Chapter's gene-seed, his skeletal structure is increased in size and strength, and his muscle growth greatly enhanced. He is implanted with a secondary hert and superior lungs that enable him to survive wounds that would kill a normal man thrice over. His blood is enhanced by organs that allow him to ingest poison without harm, filter his body of toxins and clot his wounds in an instant. Other organs allow his senses to be made preternaturally sharp or to resist the effects of radiation.
Examples of implants and their effect. Specific implants have been discussed before elsewhere, and probably will be mentioned by me again later.

Page 11
Towards the end of this process, a Space Marine is implanted with the progenoid glands, organs that are the repository of his genetic make-up. THese represent the future of the Chapter, the embodiment of the sacred flesh of the Emperor himself and without the progenoids there can be no Space Marines.
Standard progenoid lfuff.

..

Eahc bolter must be fashioned by hand, either in a Chapter's own armouries or on a forge world of the Adeptus Mechanicus.
Bolter traits.

Page 12
Tactical squads are the most numerous type of squad in a Chapter and form the backbone of the fighting strength of any forcee.

..

As thier name suggests, they are highly flexible and have the tactical adaptability to deal with any foe.

...

Those who excel in the fury of close combat are organised into Assault squads and equipped with jump packs that allow htem to take the fight to the enemy in brutal close-quarter fighting.

...

However, the art of death does not always need to be conducted at close quarters, and those Space MArines who develop a fine eye for shooting form the Chatper's Devastator squads.
Breakdown of the different kinds of Space Marine squads.

Page 12
Massively bulky and armoured with heavy sheets of plasteel and ceramite, Terminator armour consists of a full exoskeleton and a complex arrangement of fibre bundle muscles that allow a warrior to fight with deadly skill and ferocity in close quarters, where agility is secondary to protection. Incredibly ancient, the secrets of their construction has long since been lost and each one is revered by the Space Marines and loveingly maintained by the Chapter's TEchmarines.
TErminator fluff, including the bit about it beign hard to replace and build and therefor rare
.
Page 13
The mastery of technology is knowledge that has long-since passed from the Imperium of Man. What remains is debased, mythical or has become such unthinking repetition that its true purpose has been forgotten. These scraps are jealously gathered together on MArs by the Adeptus MEchanicus, the devotees of the Machine God. Only those privy to such knowledge can hope to utilise any form of technology, and such individuals are rare indeed.
Obligatory "AdMech are bunch of religious techno-zealots" scthick. Ya really can't escape it.

PAge 13
The aspiring Techmarines train for many years on MArs, learning the correct rites of activation, maintenance and how to call forth or placate teh wrath of the war-spirits of the machines they will be entrusted with. When they return to their Chapter, they are chchanged individuals, aloof and mysterious, both tech priests of the Machien God and battle brothers of their Chapter, becoming strange figures of superstitous awe. The knowledge they possess is held in great esteem by their battle brothers who recognise and acknowledge their skills in the arcane sciences pertinent to the dark secrets of technology.
Techmarine training.

Page 15
Standing three times the height of a man, Space Marine dreadnoughts are amongst the oldest war machines fighting on the battlefields of the 41st Millenium
Dreadnoughts. They vary in height at times.

Page 16
The genetic history of a Chapter is carefully monitored and recorded, no effort being spared to remove weaknesses and ensure that only the healthiest gene-seed is used to create new Space Marines. Each Space Marine carries two replicating organs known as progenoid glands. They absorb genetic material from the Space Marine's other implants and store them for later removal. If the Space Marine dieds, the progenoid glands can be extracted and used to grow fresh implants.
More on Progenoids

A Narthecium is a largely automated unit complete with sensors, probes, drugs and cehmicals. With its aid the Apothecary can perform battle surgery with ag ood chance of success.
Apothecary's medkit

Page 17
The Chapter's Apothecaries rigorously screen potential recruits for any sign of genetic deviation, but not all mutation is physical. Psychic talent is a mutation too, and is at once the most dangerous and the most useful.
Apothetcaries duties again. Although they can't do much for psychic ability (thats what Librarians are for.)

Page 17
Those that prevail join the Librarium as Lexicanium, rising through the ranks to become Codiciers and perhaps even Chief Librarians. Their abilities can pierce the warp, provide the means for interstellar communication as well as identify more of their own kind and judge whether a potential canidate is too dangerous or too malleable. The Librarius of many Chapters will include weaker psykers who are not Space Marines to perform more mundane tasks.
Librarian abilities- the ability to act as an astropath without bieng soul bound (arguably other sufficiently powreful psykers could too). Wearker psykers (like Astorpaths) may also be employed in some cases. Some chapters like the Black Templars have no Librarians so need other psykers like astropaths (albeit grudgingly.)

Page 17
In Battle Librarians unleash their powers, both as powerful weapons and as tools of prescience and precognition. They sense the shifting of the currents of the Warp and can detect the presence and movement of Warp entities.
Libariarn battle powers, including warp detection abilities.

Page 17
In battle, a Librarian relies onhis psychic hood to suppress the enemie's use of psychic powers. The hood's psychically conductive wires penetrate the skull of the wearer, directly tapping into his brain, acting as an extension of the wearer's consciousness.. It detects manipulation of the Warp and helps focus the Librarian's will to disrupt it through a series of augmetic crystals.
Psychic hoods can be used to negate enemy psykers.

Page 19
The Ultramarines' realm comprises no fewer than eight nearby systems, tituarlyl controlled from their homeworld of Macragge.

...

Neither are these [Ultramarines] worlds expected to levy troops for the Imperial Guard, but such is the prosperity and highly organsied nature of the Ultramarines' realm, that they do so anyway.
Ultramar fluff describing.

Page 19
The worlds surrounding Macragge are largely industrial in nature, though they are not polluted, poison-choked wastelands like Armageddon.
Nope. Macragge is perfect.

Page 19
Macragge is a rocky world, protected by numerous orbital defences and two vast polar defence grids.
And huge ass, sub surface laser batteries.

Page 19
The Tyranids closed on Macragge, only to be met by its fearsome planetary defenses; multiple defence laser batteries and thousands of orbital torpedo launchers. Hundreds of bio-ships were obliterated, but even such mighty defences could not hold the aliens at bay forever.
Scale of the Macragge defenses circa Hivefleet Behemoth.

Page 20
The threat of alien race and the Ruinous Powers is a constant danger on the Eastern Fringe, where the divine light of the Astronomican grows dimmer and the might of Terra is a distant power.
apparently the dimming of the astronomicon prior to its little burp was occuring even in fourth edition. Naturally of course the Eastern fringe is perhaps the most lawless section of the Imperium, being the largest.

Page 23
Librarians are ocasionally accompanied into battle by familiars; cherubs, psyber-creatures or servo skulls attuned to their mental signature. These strange constructs boost his awareness of danger and are mentally liked to the Librarian, allowing him to see and hear with their senses and even attack with them should the situation become desperate.
Librarians and their familiars. Psyber-ravens like Space Wolf Rune Priests have been known to have, are an example of this. The psychic cherub thingies some priests use in the Ecclesiarchy are another.

Page 24
The Signum is a special form of communication devie that allows the TEchmarine to access a myriad of useful battlefield targetin ginformation, and then pass it on to his fellow battle brothers.
Signum - coordinates battlefield info for targeting assistance. Neat device.

Page 25
Thunder hammers are ancient and mighty weapons that release a terrific blast of energy when they strike an opponent.
Pulsed power wepaon basically.

Page 25
A machine spirit is a combination of organic and mechanical components that help control a tank's movement and weapons systems.
Definition of a machine spirit. A servitor-like computer, basically. Of course other kinds of machien spirits exist (or don't exist, since even lasguns supposedly have them)

Page 26
Storm of the Emperor's Wrath: Lethal bolts of lightning leap from the Librarian's gauntlets, tearing his enemies apart and incinerating even the most heavily armoured targets in a barrage of psychic power.
Psyker lightning. "incinerate" troops. Could be anywhere from cremation level energies to inflicting third degree burns (low MJ to high MJ basically)

Page 26
The Librarian draws on the anceint Legends of his Chapter to create a ravening beast of pellucid flame and psychic energy. The psychic construct charges forward, burning all in its path and leaving a trail of destruction in its wake.
"psychic construct" - the Salamanders are knwon to do this, I believe.

PAge 26
The deadly powers of the Immaterium flow into the Librarian, heightening his speed and strength to unimaginable levels to better smite the foes of the Emperor.
Psychic enhancement of abilities. Probably some form of telekinesis.

PAge 26
The Librarian steps out of phase with the passage of time, able to witness the myraid potential futures and trace their origins back to the present. Armed with such knowledge, a Librarian can alter the course of events to avoid or create the future.
Time dilation and/or precognition.

PAg 26
Opening a tear between the mateiral realm and the howling destruction of the Warp, the Librarian's enemies are destroyed by the twistng energy unleashed.
Magically created vortex weapon. Eisenhorn did this.

Page 42
At any time there are approximately a thousand Chapters of Space Marines, o fwhich the majority are Codex Chapters.
Again approximately 1000 chapoters, most of them Codex.

Page 44
Almost all of the technology used by Space Marine Chapters is ancient and precious. Dreadnoughts and Terminator armour for example require rare artificer skills. A recently founded Chapter may take centuries to acquire such equipment and, should battle losses be heavy, replacements are not readily available.
Newly raised chapters won't neccesarily have Terminator armour and dreadnoughts right off the bat, at least not in any great number.

Page 45
Space Marines never accept defeat. Sometimes however this can be unwise, and stubbornness can lead to needless sacrifice. The history of the Space Marines is littered with heroic last stands, at lest some of which were probably unneccessary. The Codex Astartes adivses powerfully against this problem, but these teachings are not always heeded by the proud Adeptus Astartes.
Depends on the Chapter really. Some are really stubborn and headstrong, while others aren't nearly that stupid. Space Marines are stubborn and proud, but they are also taught, as other sources indicate, that thy are a valuable commodity and must not throw their lives away needlessly. Sometimes this is taken to extremes and Chapters will consider their Battle brothers to be more valuable than even alrge numbers of normal humans in almost ANY circumstnace (something similar almost occured in the Crimson Fists short story in "Heroes of the Space Marines)

Page 45
Although all Space Marines proudly display their heraldry to intimidate the enemy the Codex Astartes makes provision for the use of stealth where appropriate. Some Space Marine Chpaters take an extreme view and reject stealth in all its forms as an act of cowardice.
Stealth mode for Astartes.

PAge 45
All Chapters retain autonomy from the institutions of the Imperium, and the degree of cooperation they exhibit is also highly variable.
Although not free from the politics. And often their honour will entangle them in some manner or another in Imperial events.

Page 46
Captain Shrike made his name during the campaign to destroy the Ork Warlords of Targus VIII, a hive world locked in perpetual night on the fringes of the HAlo Stars of the galactic south. Fallen to the might of their Waaagh!, the task of reclaiming this world was entrusted to the Raven Guard, ten regiments of the Imperial Guard and their attached Naval units.

..

Undaunted, Shrike and his warriors remained deep in Ork territory for over two years before finally returning to the Chapter. During this time, they [Shrike and his group] provided invaluable targeting information to naval assets and wreaked havoc in the rear echelones of the ork armies, destroying fuel dumps, ammunition stores and uncounted vehicle parks before vanishing into the shadows of the ruined hive, all the while stealing what they needed.
Neat trick to pull off even if they ARE Raven Guard.

Page 48
[Chaplain Cassius of the Ultramarines] Though close on four centuries old his arm remains strong, his aim remains true and his sturdy presence within the Ultramarines battle lines fills the hearts of his younger brethren with pride.
Ultramsurfs can last at least four centuries. Meaning other Chapters probably could. In theory they could probably get older, since from Dark Creed there was some 1200 year old White consul IIRC, and they're Ultramarine descended.

Page 49
It is said he [Tigurius] is guided by the Emperor himself and there is little that happens that Tigurius does not seem to know. Were he any other man his prescience might attract suspicion but anyone who has seen him smite the foes of Ultramar in batlte know not to doubt him.

In recent decades Tigurius has turned his talents to divining more about the threat of the Tyranid hive fleets. His predictions about their movements and intents have been so accurate that it would appear he has tapped into the Tyranid gestalt consciousness, the very Hive Mind itself.

Possible Avatar/Champion of the Emperor? May explain why he can tap into the Hive Mind.

The Blood Angels Codex mentions 2 Battle Barges, 7 Strike Cruisers, 16 Escorts and 36 Thunderhawks (Codex '09, p.9), compared to 3 Battle Barges, 8 Strike Cruisers, 12 Escorts and 31 Thunderhawks for the Ultramarines (Codex '08, p.17).

Flashier things aside, the Blood Angels and Ultramarines are 95% similar organizationally. Notable exceptions are that the BAs have 21 Sanguinary Priests/Apothecaries, half the number of chapter serfs and equaries (900 vs. 1700), and 32 Librarians (Including Mephiston and 5 Dreadnought-Librarians, excluding the 5 members of the Acolytum), with 6 Epistolaries, 11 Codiciers, 8 Lexcianum, vs. 25 (Including Tigurius, excluding 3 members of the Acolytum).

And of course the Death Company, who do not appear on the Table. Because unless you are Chaplain Lemartes, you only fight for the Death Company once, and Astorath the Grim and his Chaplains finishes whatever the enemy doesn't do.

I'll posit that if you follow the Codex: Astartes, it takes about three dozen ships to satisfy your Chapter's needs for transport and naval combat, which syncs up neatly with your low end, earlier numbers IIRC.
Many thanks! These darned computers always screw me up. I calculated my first death-toll using a hand-cranked adding machine (we actually calculated the average mortality in each city block individually). Ah, those were the days.

EDIT: Dropped a clause, there. Before the Librarian numbers, it should read "...vs. the Ultramarines..."

Changed my mind. since itS Space Marine shit, I'll trhwo in black Templars and Dark Angels codexes all at once.. THEN this is finished off.

First DA codex.. 4th edition I believe.

Shielded only by the potent psychic power of the Immortal Emperor, the Imperium of Man is besieged by hostile foes.
Much like any significant Chaos God, the Emperor provides some protection to his worshippers from the predations of the warp (at least warp attacks into realspace.)

Page 4
He is armed with the fearsome bolter, a blessed weapon that fires devastating, mass-reactive shells that explode within the body of the target. He is protected by a suit of power armour, shielding him from the fiercest of enemy fire, whilst simultaneously strengthening his blows an dallowing him ot survive in the most hostile of enviroments.
Standard SM armament and armor.

This event was called the Second Founding, and over two dozen further Foundings have occured in the ten millenia since. It is not known exactly how many Chapters were created in the afterman tof the Horus Heresy, as many Imperial records are incomplete or lost entirely, and whole Chapters have been created and destroyed in the millenia that have followed. What is known is tha there are just over a thousand Chapters scattered across the Imperium at the end of the 41st Millenium, and the Dark Angels stand first amongst them.
Brief description of the escond founding and a reiteration of the "one thousand Chapters", although this one is interesting in the sense that it describes it as a "current" estimate with slightly more than a thousand.

Page 6
The genes used as the basic building blocks for these elite warriors had taken centuries to gather and refine..
It took centuries to get the neccessary material to make the Primarchs. This no doubt was one major reason why the Emperor just didn't try making more.. he didnt have enough time if he didnt want to set his timetable back at all.

Page 6
The nobles of Caliban were raised from childhood to live and die by the sword: they were disciplined fighters and extremely brave. They rode into battle upon huge, black steeds, and wore a form of archaic powered armour similar to that used by the Space Marines. Like the Space Marines, their main weapons were the chainsword and bolt pistol.
It is interesting to see that a human type world that had apparently degenerated still had some form of power armor as well as other weapons. This would tend to suggest that the "viability" of 40K power armor depends in
large amount on the quality and type (basically not all power armor is the same.)

Which is not to say its os prevalant that there would be individual Guardsmen that had it (Therea re other reasons to restrict it too for example), but it has at least the potential, in some form, to be more common than apparently is.

Of course the definition of "powered armor" is quite open. It doesnt neccesairly, for example, mean "greatly enhances strength/mobility" type. IT might just give enhanced sensory capability, for example.

Page 8
Those knights who were still young enough had the Legion's gene-seed implanted within them, transforming them into mighty Space Marines, warriors fit to serve in the Emperor's armies. Those too old for this process underwent transformative surgery, and whil they would never be as strong, tough, or fast as a Space Marine, they would nonetheless be counted amongst the elite warriors of the Imperium.
I do wonder what this "transformative surgery" might entail (augmetics?), and why it might not have been used more extensivel to provide troops. It coul dhave provided a mid-level force somewhere between the Army and the Astartes (more powerful than the army and more numerous than the Guard). Perhaps it was cost-prohibitive and only was done to the Lion's closest comrades?

Page 8
As the Emperor fought Warmaster Horus on Terra, Jonson was fighting for humanity on the distant Shield Worlds, alongside Leman Russ, Primarch of the Space Wolves Legion. When word reached Jonson and Russ of the titanic battle being fought at Terra, the two generals marshalled their froces and set course for Terra with all haste. The journey took many weeks, for the Space Marines' vessels were assailed by the Daemons of the warp, and delayed fighting further outbreaks of rebellion. After weeks of warp travel, the fleet arrived at Terra, but the Primarchs found to their horror that they were too late.
"weeks" to return ot Terra. We don't know definitively where the Dark Angels were.. (the Heresy novels and collected visions dont mention the shield worlds and keep its locale secret) but we can make some guesses.

collected visions describes Leman Russ as being primarily involved with first Prospero and the Thousand sons, then shortly after helping the White Scars against the Alpha Legion before the Khan returns to Terra. One could conjecture that Russ beat the Alpha Legion perhaps with the help of the Dark Angels, and then together set out to deal with Horus Prospero is around 20-30K LY as I recall on most maps, so by Collected visions the

At the very least though we know they're far beyond Terra, which says at least 10-15K LY away. At the far end it can't be beyond the range of the astronomican, which would be 60-70K LY at the other end. We could reinforce this other value by noting that Horus dispatched all the loyalist Legions far away from himself and Terra, which means that logically they should be on the edges of the Imperium proper as seemed likely (Ultramarines out to Ultramar, for example, where they were attacked by the Word Bearers)

for 10-15 thousand LY and 2-3 weeks, the FTL speeds range from ~174,000c to 390,000c.

20-30K LY (where the White Scars or Space wolves are estimated to be) we're talking twice that between 350,000c to nearly 780,000c.

At the far edge of the Astronomican to Terra (50-70K LY) is somewhere between 867,000c and 1,820,000c

It should be noted that if the Space Marines were delayed, this speed probably isnt an upper limit. (in all probablyilty they had to make several smaller jumps from system to system to get their bearings, and got attacked in the process.) It would be accurate probably though to within an order of magnitude.

Page 9
The massed guns of the Dark Angels fleet obliterated Caliban's defence laser batteries and then scoured the planet in a devastating bombardment, driving the rebel Dark Angels deep into their fortress monasteries.
Apparently not enough to render the place uninhabitable, but serious enough one imagines.

Page 9
The two adversaries laid blow after blow upon one another, shockwaves form their impacts shaking the monastery and causing chunks of masonry the size of battletanks to crash down around them. Meanwhile the massed guns of the fleet continued to pound the planet, until many monasteries were reduced to miles-wide craters, angry magma spewing from the raw wounds in the planet's crust. The very surface of Caliban began to crack and have under the strain of the bombardment, the fury of the Dark Angels blinding them to the devastation they were wreaking upon their own world.

..

As the planet itself started to break apart, the battle between Jonson and Luther reached its climax.
Luthre and Jonson destroy the monastery around them as a side effect of their uber battle, and the Dark Angels bombardment quite clearly is blowing big holes in the crust of the planet (magma shooting up, cracking the crust, and "miles wide" craters) The novel "angels of Darkness" also describes stuff like the oceans boiling or such as I recall, suggesting that the bombardment was definitely extemrinatus level. Considering that the planet was weakened neough for a warp storm to blow it apart... no shock really.

We dont know how many ships there are or how long the bombardment went (aside from the fact it lasted throughout the battle) but if we assume a day and thousands of ships of varying types and assume that the oceans were boiled/vaporized. Assuming boiling its somewhere in the e26 joule range, the power output would be somewhere in the e17-e18 watt range.

Another possibility is with the craters, Blasting a 2 mile crater in the ground would be easy with 6 MT (more for beam weapons or impactors). Cracking the crust or similar probably requires much more.. 10+km reaching into the single or double digit GT range (possibly consistent with the magma bit - depending on source magma chambers of volcanos can form anywhere from a kilometer to ten km, although I've heard some say "several km" is typical and can go up to tens of km. Broadly consistent either way.). although we dont know if its single or multipel shots (cratering would suggest a single event, but it could be argued either way.)

The two calcs seem roughly consistent with each other, but the absence of hard numbers makes it little more than supportive conjecture for other calcs. Still, it snice to know.

Page 9
..the Chaos Gods realised that, once again, they had been denied, their pawn defying their will. They lashed out in fury and frustration. A rent appeared in the very fabric of space and a warp storm of unprecedented fury engulfed Caliban. In an uncontrollable, swirling flood of psychic energy the warp rushed into the physical universe. Those 'fallen' Dark Angels who had served under Luther and his clandestine masters were sucked from the face of Caliban inot the warp and cast throughout space and time. Caliban, already weakened by the bombardment, was ripped apart and destroyed in a cataclysmic explosion, the debris being sucked into the warp.

The only part of the planet that survived the storm was the huge fortress monastery where Jonson and Luther had fought - the Tower of Angels. Protected by force fields of awesome power, the monastery and a huge chunk of the bedrock of Caliban held together.
Warp storm + bombardment fragged the planet. We dont know however the extent that one or the other did the damage, however.

It is worth noting this as an example of how destructive warp storms can be, though, and that the Tower of Angels' defneses managed to hold it together through the bombardment. It gives us an indication of how durable Imperial forcefield defences can get.

Page 10
..the Unforgiven have continued their Primarch's tradition of conducting particularily effective and well-planned campaigns, although there exist instances where an Unforgiven Chapter has failed to support Imperial forces when requested to do so. On occasion, the Unforgiven have abandoned a campaign at a critical juncture iwth no reason being offered to explain why, leaving entire armies to be slaughtered and whole worlds to burn.
As I've said in the past, the Dark Angels have a habit and history of being complete dicks in pursuit of their "forgiveness". One would think that atonement might better be sougt from the Emperor if they simply just DID THEIR FUCKING job and helped their allies, but..

Page 10
In time, a huge warp drive was added, allowing the Rock to travel across the entire galaxy. The Rock itself does not stay in any one system for long, at most only a few generations. The Chapter gathers recruits from each world at which the Rock pauses.

The Rock is larger than the heaviest class of star ship, and armed with enough firepower to devastate an entire fleet. Its cliff-like sides are studded with gun turrets, lance batteries, torpedo tubes and observation blisters, and its cavernous docking bays are able to accommodate many hundreds of smaller vessels. Clustered around the Rock are swarms of lesser craft - Thunderhawk gunships and transporters and escort frigates.

..

To this day, the Tower remains undisturbed and eerily silent, protected by the same force fields that shielded it from the destruction of Caliban. What secrets lie forgotten within its dark halls none can say. Even the Dark Angels dare not set foot upon its hallowed ground....
I have to wonder where the Imperium just happens to get "super huge warp drives" to do this sort of thing. I mean Phalanx may have come already equipped but other fortress monasteries like this...

I also wonder what class the "hundreds of smaller vessels" would be. Larger than gunships and frigates, but presumably smaller than battle barges? And there probably are more than "hundreds" of frigates?

Page 12
Some believe that Cypher is watched over by those dark powers that spirited the Fallen away during the fall of Caliban, repeating this feat whenever his pursuers close upon him. Others state that Cypher is under the protection of some other, higher power.

..the Dark Angels were one of the Few Chapters that did not use the strict Codex organisation liad down by roboute Guilliman. This being said, an outside observer would find it difficult to spot any differences between the Dark Angels and a Chapter rigidly organised according ot the Codex such as the Ultramarines.

..

The Chapter relies on a large support staff, and highly ranked members include the Victuallers and the Grand Masters of the fleet, the Arsenal, Recruits and the Watch. Although each Grand Master is a Space Marine, there are actually relatively few Brethren in the Chapter's support staff, and most combat roles are performed by the Chapter's Human serfs. The Chapter inlcudes a large number of support staff that do not know the full history of the Chapter, but hold great responsibility nonetheless. Many are non-combatants of advanced years tasked with the day-to-day administration of the Chapter. The largest group of Dark Angels Space Marines in the support staff are the Chapter's Armourers and Techmarines, who are aided in their tasks by hundreds of mono-task Servitors.

Page 14
Members of the Deathwing always fight in Terminator armour, and are never fielded in power armour as is the case with most other Chapters.
This likely means the Dark Angels 1st company has a fuckload of terminator armor.

Page 14
The 10th Company consists of a number of Scout squads; youths who have been recruited and partially transformed into Space Marines. There is no formal size for this company as the rate of recruitment is not fixed.
Again, scout companies are not strictly fixed the way other companies technically are. And as a rule attrition favors a Chatper keeping as many scouts as they possibly can.

PAge 14
All of the companies, with the exception of the Deathwing, the Ravenwing, and the Scout company maintain Rhino transports for each of their squads and officers. The Command squad of each company has its own Razorback, and more are held centrally by the Armoury, each being allocated to individual squads as dictated by the needs of their mission. Drop pods are held by the fleet. The Deathwing has a permanant establishment of Land Raiders for carrying Terminator squads, and more are held in the Armoury for use as requested by the Company Master on the Spot.

Many of the Battle companies and REsreve companies include a number of dreadnoughts.
Company breakdown of the Dark Angels.

Page 16
It is believed that when the Dark Angels Legion was divided, the Terminator armour-equipped Assault company was divided into a number of 100-strong units and each assigned to a Chapter formed from the Legion.
This suggests all the DA spinoffs are all Terminator armor heavy.

Page 16

Space Marine neophytes who have not yet received their own suits of power armour are instead clad in scout armour. Scout armour is formed of thick plates of carapace armour, easily capable of stopping a bullet. The fatigues are made from ballistic nylon, providing further protection from harm without hindering the Scout's movements. Less cumbersome and noisy than power armour, scout armour is ideal for the subtle infiltration work that its wearers embark upon.
Scout armor described. While it is technically carapace, one could assume that it incorporates thicker, heavier plates than carapace a normal man would wear, due to the Scout's enhancements.

Because of the oaths sworn to the Machine-cult of Mars, the Techmarines are never initiated into the Deathwing, instead kept at arms length from the Chapter's darkest secrets. The Chapter's apothecaries rigorously screen potential recruits for any sign of genetic deviation, but not all mutation is physical. Psychic talent is a mutation too, and is at once the most dangerous and the most useful. Detecting and developing nascent psykers is the responsibility of the Chapter's Librarium, removing those recruits whose mutation may prove unstable and nuturing those who might one day have the ability to become one of the Chapter's Librarians.
Boh librarians and Apothecaries are needed to properly scan for genetic purity.

Over the cneturies, some of the highest ranking wrariors of the Unforgiven Chapters have gone to war accompanied by diminutive, hooded attendants known as Watchers in the Dark. THey remain close to their master, if such a term applies, and appear immune to all acts of violence.

What manner of creature lies beneath the Watchers' long robes none can say, not even the Unforgiven. Perhaps the Watchers are simply vat-grown servitor constructs akin to the creatures that accompany some high-rankin gofficials. Perhaps they are some manner of xenos creature. Perhaps they are something far more sinister, an incorporeal manifestation of the Unforgiven's collective guilt, clothed in monastic robes and shadowing those privy to the Chapter's most terrible secrets.
WAtches in the DArk described. THey are covered in more detail in hthe HH novels.. they are highly psychic, apparently alien, and opposed to Chaos in all its forms (that I remember from the novels. I may have missed details.) They also seem to have a strong connection to Caliban as well - a connection that survived the destruction of the planet.

Just why they serve teh DArk Angels, however.. I do not think has been covered.

It was in recognition of his superior skills in hand-to-hand combat that Grand Master Azrael presented Belial with an ancient power sword, the Sword of Silence, a weapon crafted from the same meteoric iron as the Sword of Secrets.
meteoric iron... appears to bhave a special significant to the Dark Angels.

Page 43
The swords carried by the highest-ranking members of the Inner Circle, collectively known as the Heavenfall Blades, are cut from a single block of obsidian. Dark Angels Chapter lore holds that the block formed the core of a meteorite that struck the rock in orbit around the feral world of Al Baradad. THe mightiest of these blades is the Sword of Secrets, carried by the holder of the rank of Supreme Grand Master. Those blades carried by the Msater of the Deathwing and the Master of the Ravenwing also utilise small amounts of obsidian in their working.

The Master of the Ravenwing however is privileged to ride into battle upon an example of this nigh extinct technology, a prized vehicle built to the highest standards, the like of which may never be seen again in the service of the Imperium. In addition to its nose-mounted storm bolters, the vehicle is equipped with an underslung plasma cannon, itself an example of ill-understood technology, its fusion generator capable of powering many hundreds of shots.
Jetbikes are apparently lost technology to the Imperium. Note the plasma cannon's fusion generator being able to power "hundred of shots."

Assault cannon are heavy weapons borne by Space Marine Terminators, Dreadnoguths, or mounted on vehicles. Autocannons fire large calbire, high velocity explosive shells and are most effective used against light vehicles or particularily tough infantry. They are employed in the turret mounts of Prdator Destructors, and are also carried as a linked pair, on Dark Angels Dreadnoughts. Marvels of technology, they [meltaguns] superheat their target with sub-molecular thermal agitation, literally cooking and melting away armour plates. Most effective at very short range, the meltagun is capable of reducing rock, metal and living material to molten slag or ash.
Meltaguns use "sub-molecular thermal agaitation" like a microwave. Can melt or cremate almost any material.

Page 51

Smaller than the plasm acnanon, a plasma gun does not fire a blast in quite the same fashion, rather sveeral smaller 'pulses' of plasma energy instead.
"molten gas"? Plasma gun are a multi shot version of plasma cannon.

Plasma pistols are the smallest variant in the plasma weapon family. Each shot from a plasma pistol contains all the destructive fury of a larger plasma gun, alhough the range and rate of fire are less.
Plasma pistols are here noted to be as powerful as plasma guns, but with a lower rate of fire (longer cooling or charging period due to compact size?) and reduced range (not as many coils or accelerators)

The ceramite plates [of Terminator armour] can deflect most conventional assaults, whilst the Crux Terminatus on every Terminator's shoulder plate serves as a ward capalbe of turning aside even attacks from power weapons or melta fire. It is even said that Terminator armour can withstand the titanic energies at a plasma generator's core, and that this is in fact the armour's original purpose.

..the Dark Angels Legion sired at least three new Chapters. These are the Angels of Absolution, the Angels of Vengeance and the Angels of Redemption, but more of these so-called 'Successors' are said to exist. Certainly, more were created than are recorded, and all of these Chapters are extant to this day.
Dark Angels spun off at least 3 other chapters from the original Legion.

Paged 74
The Angels of Vengeance emobdy one particular aspect of the Dark Angels' character above others - what might be described as a devotion to their cause bordering on the single-minded. The Chapter is wont to become embroiled in battles other forces would have little hope of winning, and of emerging, bloody and battered, but victorious.

The Angels of Vengeance are known for their unrelentting hared of any and all enemies of the Imperium and are thus extremely proactive in seeking out and attacking the alien, the traitor, and the servant of Chaos.
The Angels of Vengeance - one of the Dark Angels successor chapters. They seem to make the Black Templars look moderate and reasonable.

Page 74
In the aftermath of the Siege of San Apolis, losses were so severe that the Chapter was forced to spend almost a century replenishing its ranks and its gene-seed stocks before it could do battle once more.
One wonders how "Severe" severe was.

Page 74
It is believed that Dark Angels Chapter Master Anaziel made a strong request of the High Lords of TErra for a Chapter to be raised late in the 37th miilenium. Much debate followed, for it was unheard of for a Chapter Master to make such a request, and although no clear reason was given by the Dark Angels the request was eventually granted and the Disciples of Caliban were created.

It is generally acknowledged that Anaziel had the Disciples of Caliban created for a very specific and seretive purpose - rumoured amongst the other Unforgiven to be the uprsuit and capture of the renegade known as Cypher, though none outside of the Disciples of Caliban Inner Circle know if this really is their true purpose.
I wonder how the Chapter Master pulled this off.

7 brigades vs 3 million Orks. and the Dark Angels spinoff chapters are as assholish as their parent Legion was.

Post by Connor MacLeod »

AAANND.. Black Templars. This concludes the first 3rd/4th edition analysis thread. All the Space Marine stuff is done. Pretty much all Imperial stuff and a few others (armageddon and EoT campaigns, etc.)

Page 2
They are superior to normal humans in every respect, able to survive wounds that would kill a normal man thrice over and fight in the harshest conditions imaginable with a depth of faith that is unquenchable in its force of belief.
Space marines 3x tougher than a normal human

Page 4
Mustered into the great, ten thousand strong Legions of the First founding, they were warriors of immense strength and unbreakable willpower, with an unflinching loyalty to the Emperor.
Nowadays they're tens of thousands or hundreds of thousands per Legion. Much smaller back then.

Page 4
Each [Primarch] was engineered to be a leader of men, a warrior and a herol; a mighty warlord whose martial prowess was only matched by his charisma and mental abilities.
Primarchs had great physical and mental abilities, but not much in the way of magical/directly manipulated psychic power save for Magnus.

Page 6
Rogal Dorn, who had coordinated the defence of Holy Terra, refused to have his Legion broken down into smaller Chapters, stating that it was his sacred duty to protect the Emperor and that he could not afford to split his forces across the Imperium. Dorn called Guilliman a coward, for the Ultramarines had not participated in the defence of the Imperial Palace, while Guilliman accused Dorn of being a rebel and refusing the dictates within his Codex Astartes.

Dorn would not relent, and neither would Guilliman; Leman Russ of the Space Wolves and Vulkan of the Salamanders agreed with Dorn for they too did not want thier Legions scattered to the corners of the galaxy, but Corax of the Raven Guard and Jaghatai Khan of the White Scars backed the Ultramarines.

..

When the Imperial Fists were violently persecuted for their supposed heresies, and the strike cruiser Terrible Angel was fired upon by the Imperial Navy, it was almost inevitable that once more interecine war would engulf the Space Marines and the Imperium.
..

..Dorn finally relented. He agreed to the formation of two new Chapters from his Legion - the Crimson Fists and the Black Templars would be split from the Imperial Fists Chapter and forge their own path.

The events leading up to the formation of the second founding Chatpers of the Imperial Fists (no Soul Drinkers, of course. I guess even Dorn was embarassed by them.) It also highlights the obvious favoritism of the High Lords and the rest of the bureacrats of the Imperium for Guilliman and the UItramarines, given that they sided against the Fists. Rather a shabby way to be treated when you were instrumental in saving the Emperor and Terra from Horus.

Page 8
All that is known is that there are approximately a thousand Chapters currently in existence, and that the majority of them follow the strict organisational and tactical guidelines of the Codex Astartes.

..

the Chapter [Black Templars] embarked upon its Crusade, eschewing the idea of a homeworld and living aboard their Crusade fleets, made up of dozens of battle barges, strike cruisers and other craft such as training vessels and gigantic forgeships. The High Marshal himself has his own battle barge, the Eternal Crusader a huge vessel that is the spiritual home of the Chapter and contains its most sacred relics....

..

It has been expanded and refitted many times over ten thousand years, with extra docking facilities for escort ships, additional launch bays for shuttles and Thunderhawks, as well as accommodation for twice as many Space marines as a normal battle barge.
Approximately a thousand Chpaters, most of them Codex Chapters (not surprising considering how many must be Ultramarines descended.) The BT have huge Crusade Fleets made up of dozens of ships (hundreds possibly total?)

The Main BT battlebarge can handle up wards of 600-800 troops due to its size.

Page 8
There are usually no more than three Crusades at any one time..

..

..during the Treacherry of Dalmark, there were as many as fourteen Crusades fighting across Segmentum Solar. The size of a Crusade can also vary widely, sometimes as few as fifty to a hundred warriors, sometimes the equivalent of several Companies from a Codex Chapter.
3 Crusades means at least 3 crusade fleets, but it could be as high as 14. So perhaps as few as 70 or as many as hundreds. Crusades vary in size quite a bit, obviously too.

PAge 8
Only the High Marshal of the Chapter has any idea how many Black Templars Space Marines there are, but it is obvious that they are far more numerous than most conventional Chapters, although dispersed over a much wider area. If certain accounts are to be believed, they could even be as storng as five thousand to six thousand battle brethren in total, a force that woudl be all but unstoppable if ever gathered in a single place.
Unknown how many BT there are, but possibly at least 5,000-6,000 at least. Some sources have hinted they might be a Legion in and of themselves.

Page 8
Exactly how these Crusades communicate with each other is uncertain, though it is speculated that the Black Templars make use of only such Navigators and Astropaths as have been sanctified by other organisations and are repentant of the curse of psychic powers. These Chapter keeps are sizeable, with chambers to accomodate two or three Companies of Space Marines, but are smaller than the fortress-monasteries of other Chapters. There have been hundreds of Chapter keeps established over the millenia, some of which are still standing, while others have been abaonded and are no longer manned.
They hate psykers and have no Chaplains. Also have hundreds of Chapter keeps, only some of which are used. Assuming 50-100 and maybe several squads apiece, there could easily be thousands of BT devoted just to keeping up the Keeps.

Page 11

..warriors known as Initiates - who will train them further. Each initiate takes it upon himself to train a neophyte in the art of war and the tirutals of the Black Templars. The Neophytes act as servants to their master, waiting on them at the great banquets and seeing to domestic chores, whilst on the battlefield the Initiate teaches their young pupil through example. This means that the Black Templars have no dedicated Scout Company as other Chapters do; instead the Neophytes are trained in a wide variety of combat situations and receive personal attnetion and tuition from the initiates.[/quote]

Scout and battle brothers are integrated. This is bound to produce some.. unique.. training.

Some implants need hypnotic stimuli or chemical therapy to mature and require the most stringent monitoring and testing regime to develop properly.
additional factors needed for gene-seed development.

Pgae 11
Space Marine power armour is the synthesis of several long-forgotten technologies that may predate even the Age of Strife. At the commencement of the Great Crusade, all the lore that could be found was gathered and relearned to shape the armour of the Space Marines. Even so, it was not until the end of the Horus Heresy that the task was finished. The armour known as the MKVII (or Aquila) was the result and remains the most familiar type in use.
Origins of Space Marine Power armour.

Page 12
When roughly two dozen of those recruits whom the Apothecaries and Chaplains have deemed worthy are ready for additional implants and further training, they are despatched to one of the Crusade fleets of the Black Templars for furthre training.
Crusade fleets seem to recruit in groups of several dozen, at least in the scout stage.

Page 12
The greatest warriors in a Fighting Company will be organised into the Marshal's household, the equivaelnt of a Codex Chapter's First Company. Known as the Sword Brethren, these Space MArines are mighty heroes whose legends have become part of the Chapter's history...
There is no first company apparently either.

Page 15
Each crusade nominally has an Emperor's Champion, but in practice there is actually one for every Figthing Company.
I suppose its like a Chaos Champion, only for the Emperor.

Page 16
The mastery of technology is knoweldge that has long since passed from the Imperium of Man. What remains is debased, mythical, or has become such unthinking repetition that its true purpose has been forgotten.
Yeah yeah.. the adMech doesnt really knwo what its doing, etc. etc. It's not nearly as generalized as that either way, any more than the Inquisition is.

Page 16
Together with a retinue of cybernetically-altered servitors, the Techmarines can also effect battlefield repairs on vehicles, healing the damage done to armour and rekindling the war-spirits so that it may fight once more.
Techmarines can do in-battlefield work that includes repairing armour, which I think says something.

Page 16
Many Techmarines are equipped with servo-arms or a full servo-harness, specialised auxiliary limbs grafted to the Techmarine's armour and linked to his nervous system via a neural network.

Standing three times the height of a man, Space Marine Dreadnoughts are amongst the oldest war machines fighting on the battlefields of the 41st millenium, with some dating back thousands of years to when the Emperor himself walked amongst his people.
Space MArine dreadnoughts.. up to 6 meters or so tall. Curiously it implise that there are Dreadnoughts other than Bjorn Fell Handed 10K years old. I wonder who has them and why we never hear about them.

A narthecium is a largely automated unit complete with sensors, probes, drugs and chemicals. With its aid the Apothecary can perform battle surgery with a good chance of success, particularily given the superhuman resilience of a Space Marine.
Also known as a medikit.

Page 19
High Marhsal Sigenandus delcared a Crusade against Vandire and, together with their Primogenitor Chapter, the Imperial Fists, two other Chapters - the Fire Hawks and Soul Drinkers - and the Martian Tech Guard, the Black Templars took the fight ot Terra itself.
Interestingly enough it does not identify the Soul Drinkers as a related chapter the way it does the Fists.

Page 19
The Divine Army preached a doctrine of intolerance of those with even the slightest deviation from what their leaders viewed as the perfect human being. Genetically tailored viruses that targeted particular traits eradicated whole swathes of the population, and when Imperial contact was re-established with this remote planet, only two and a half million inhabitants were left of a world that had once boasted a population of fourteen billion.
Th genetically tailored viruses bit is interesting, as its known that certain kinds of virus weapons fi tthat. Also note the population of 14 billion for a "remote planet."

Page 20
In desperation, Ludoldus hurled one of the Holy Orbs of Antioch, a bomb infused with volatile holy oils and high explosives into the central chasm of lava. The resultant explosion tore the chasm apart and a massive earthquake shook the mountain to its core as rockes nad pillars crashed down into the fiery pit.
Monty python joke, behaves like a fucking nuke.

Page 20
To ensure no trace of the Daemon and its cult remained, Ludoldus ordered the planet bombarded from orbit until the massive forces unleashed tore the planet's crust apart and buried it beneath an ocean of seething magma.
If this is a Crusade fleet (and this was labeled a crusade) that means there are dozens of ships (not neccearily all of which are warships) to do this. Pity we don't have an exact timeframe, but this is substantailly nastier than the usual exterminatus. Either the crust was molten, or it was blasted into pieces which sank into the magma or left the surface. Far, far more energy than billions of megatons for extinction level events, and since it had a chaos Cult large enough to summon a daemon, it ad to be a fiarly well inhabited planet (mining world perhaps, since its volcanic.)

Page 20
Not all Crusades of the Black Templars are vast undertakings - some comprise of the warriors aboard but a single vessel.
I take this to be an exception rater than a rule.

A Machine Spirit is a combination of organic and mechanical components that helps to control a tank's movement and weapon systems.
Machine spirits are also cybernetic like servitors. Although I suspect the degree of "orgnaic" varies. Soe Machine Spirits arguably aren't (EG Titans, possibly starships, etc.) Since a lasgun supposedly has a "machine spirit" and I doubt (hope) it has no organic bits in it.
