Weird Evangelion Wanking?

Okay, so I just finished the series Najica Blitz Tactics last night, and I happened upon a curious scene that I swear was some sort of bizzare homage to Evangelion. In one particular episode (Mission 8 I believe) there was a red-headed character that looked exactly like Asuka (similar behavior too), had the same English voice actor (Don't know about the Japanese one), was named "Azusa Katsuragi", and had a scene that was almost exactly like Asuka's introduction from Evangelion.

Has anyone else seen this series? Am I just tripping or is this more then a coincidence?

When it comes to the anime industry, there's no such thing as a coincidence. It was most likely a deliberate homage/parody.

Parodys are everywhere in anime.

Ones I like are El Gigante in Burn Up (Obviously made to be like EVA-01), Fireflash (from Thunderbirds) in Gunbuster. I also loved the parody of Combattler V in Galaxy Angel

Then of course there's Gekiganger....

If you want Akito - Yurika romantic development, watch the Nadesico OAV (Gekiganger 3 Movie). Its set after the series, and ends with an important development.
