LotR troll question.

Post by fgalkin2 »

This is a question that bugged me for some time. In the Hobbit, the trolls turn to stone in daylight, but in LotR they have no problem being out during the day. What happened? Are those different kinds of trolls than the ones from the Hobbit or did Sauron do something to increase their resistance to daylight?

Have a very nice day.

Remember the shrowd that covers Mordor? Saron appears to have arranged his empire so that his minnions opperate at maximum Efficiency. Remember Orcs weaken during the day unless they stay in the shadows. Mordor is always shethed in shadow. Also the Hobbit Trolls were Cave Trolls like the one seen in Moria. In attacking Minas Tirath he extended his shadow to the city. Remember when they were talking about Mordor attaking Gondor and a shadow fell over Osgiliath? Sauron has is way of ensuring his minnions are the strongest possible.

There are different breeds of trolls. There are the generic trolls (Mountain, Cave, Stone, etc...) and then there are the Olog-Hai. The former are all creature orginally created by Morogoth and will turn to stone in sunlight. Olog-hai were Sauron's improved version of the breed and they were more or less immune to the effects of the sun.

See Extended edision of The Fellowship. The Place they stop has the Trolls in the theatrical to it is not pointed out(AKA camera does not focus on them)

In the book Pippin gets the crap scared out of him when they run across them and he doesn't realize they're stone.
