Dead Men tell No tales. [Potc5] potential spoilers

Post by Crazedwraith »

Some friends of mine were keen on seeing it for old times sake. And while I don't think it's as bad as the fourth one, it's still pretty dire.

There's massively over the top set pieces and slapstick unleavened by the actual wit of the original trilogy. There was a lack of the decent swordplay of the early films and the central macguffin was very underwhelming.

They clearly tried. Both to make the new characters likable and in rooting it more in the original trilogy but in the end it feels like an echo of them. Nothing here that's better than just rewatching Curse Of The Black Pearl.

Eh, considering people bashed the hell out of three and I very much liked it, I'll hold off until I've seen the film before drawing any conclusions. Bashing the newest Pirates film has been a popular internet pastime since the second one, but its one I've never really gotten on-board with.

I can't be the only one that loved Dead Man's Chest (the second one). I though 3 and 4 were great and decent respectively too. I'm looking forward to seeing 5.

I mean, yeah, the films do go over the top with the stunts and shit at times. But, well, I wonder if people have the wrong expectations of these films. As I've said before, the main purpose of these films is basically just to provide a nice backdrop for Johnny Depp and Geofrey Rush to play off of each other. As long as it delivers that, its not a total loss.

Yoù are entitled to your own opinion and I hope you like it if you see it. However, I don't bash them because it's the popular thing to do. I watched the film, made up my own mind and posted my opinion.

Fair enough. I'm just saying that my views on the Pirates films have been out of synch with a lot of reviews for a long time now.

As far as I'm concerned, these movies are 1.) a cash cow for Disney that they'll keep milking as long as they can, and 2.) Johnny Depp's retirement pension. There is no particular attempt at art, rather they rest upon hiring fairly high-profile actors to headline the film, hand them whatever shreds of plot they've come up with, and allow them to bounce off each other, throw in some fancy special effects, and call it a day.

Rather similar to what the Fast and Furious movies have become, actually-- hire actors, drive fast cars, throw around a few snarky lines, and done.

Fun watches? Sure, a couple times or so. But past the first couple or so, little effort has been paid to actually making good movies, rather they're making surefire cash-printing films that innovate little and artificially restrict the growth of the various characters in the name of continuity.
It's a strange world. Let's keep it that way.

And my point is that: "Jonny Depp and Geofrey Rush and whichever hammy villain played by a good actor they have this time bounce off each other, against a backdrop of pseudo-17th. Century Caribbean scenery porn", makes for a pretty entertaining film all by itself.

I saw it with my wife, since she's been a fan of the films since the first one came out...

Fun, mostly, but Johnny Depp's performance was sub-par. My wife saw someone on Tumblr describe it as "drunkenly tweeted at 3 am" because "phoning it in" was giving him too much credit. I can't say I disagree. In fact, I would not be surprised if Johnny Depp was legitimately inebriated for much of the movie instead of just acting like he was absolutely smashed. The scenes with a bunch of Jack were ones I wanted to just get over with, but Barbossa and the new characters were fun.
Spoiler
I fully expect them to find a way to bring back Barbossa, because he's fantastic. I am saddened that Jack the Monkey isn't immortal anymore. Undead monkey is a recipe for fun, dammit.

Also, I am hoping that the next movies don't have much if any Jack Sparrow and instead focus on Will, Elizabeth, and Davy Jones. Johnny Depp is just... ugh.
Sig images are for people who aren't fucking lazy.

I cut Depp some slack on the acting front, because, well... who would be at their best if they were going through a nasty divorce/legal battle (I don't wish to get into weather Depp is guilty of the allegations made against him, and haven't followed the case closely enough to really say what I think on that score)?

Well, finally saw this. An okay start, then a lot of meandering script, crass jokes, over-the-top-yet-boring stunts, and mediocre performances. Johnny Depp was really off his game for much of the film as well, though he had his moments. But Rush was good, as always, and despite having read some spoilers for the ending, I admit I teared up a bit at it.

I'll be interested to see how the after credits scene plays out. Not saying any more.
