Galavant

Post by Thanas »

...a musical fairytale comedy created by none other than Alan Menken & Glenn Slater (you know, the guys who wrote the Little Mermaid) on ABC.

It is absolutely fantastic. It plays with conventions and has tons of injokes, like this one: Link

I'm enjoying it so far. I'm curious as to how long they can keep subverting expectations of traditional fairytale characters and storytelling.

Very enjoyable if you like musicals and don't take shows seriously - and the Game of Thrones-jokes continue :-)

I will keep singing Gaaaalaaavaaant :-)

I just watched the first couple of episodes on Hulu. I find it quite enjoyable so far, but haven't seen the third or fourth episodes as they're still behind the paywall.

Glad you guys seem to like it. The fantasy/gaming forum I post on when not here is roundly panning it so far, though the complaints seem to boil down to not liking musical theater.

Yesterday my wife and I binge-watched all the episodes On Demand before last night's showing. I think it was more pleasant to follow them at once rather than week to week, and the story is well-paced. The songs are hilarious, and probably the perfect antidote for Frozen ear worms. I'm surprised but pleased this kind of adult humor made it to prime-time when it's content seems a bit more Comedy Central.

EDIT: They already released the soundtrack on iTunes, too.

By far my favorite part was the jousting in the second episode(second half hour). It is also nice that it isn't going to be a drawn out series with no ending like the majority of TV series, especially on broadcast networks.

Yeah, the jousting episode was the best of the whole show so far.

The show is lots of fun, and they put up their own songs with lyrics on youtube the night of each episode.

So far the jousting was my favorite, even with singing pirates and Weird Al and the monks. But I'll add that I had a big surprise when they got to Sid's hometown, did the whole pointless deception thing and I was primed and expecting the same old story where Sid gets caught in his lies and.... it never happened. I mean, bucking formula has kind of been their thing, but I nearly skipped out rather than watch this same story play out again, so a good surprise.

Personally I was fond of Richards increasing insane ball.

It's odd though. If someone told me two months ago that Vinnie Jones was born to act in a fairy tale musical comedy I'd have laughed in their face.

Well, this was an unexpected ending. I really hope this show gets renewed. It was great fun, especially the Downton Abbey jokes in the penultimate episode.

I've never seen a show beg for another season quite so literally, and I was surprised as I'd thought I'd heard somewhere that this would be a one-season, tightly-written affair. But I'll be plenty happy if they come back, my sole complaint is that the plot seemed to suddenly strop when they actually reach Valencia.

The sleeping song and secret mission made up for all of that, i think.

I love the whole show. I'm going to be lighting candles to Thor to get a new season.

I'm wondering if the complete lack of resolution is part of the joke.

That's the longest I've seen heroes sit in a dungeon. I loved the "Happy Ending For Us" song, too.
