Constantine the series
Caught the premiere the other day and it was much better than the movie.

I thought the movie was pretty good. I wasn't crazy about the design of the demons but overall I liked it. I hadn't read any of the Hellbleazr books before hand so all of the changes didn't bother me.dragon wrote:Caught the premiere the other day and it was much better than the movie.
I've been hesitant to watch the show because I ended up not liking Arrow, even though it had some excellent bits the CWishness and tv format got on my nerves after several episodes. While I do like The Flash it could be or have been a lot better so I've been hesitant to watch more of the DC shows.
What I've seen of Gotham was verging on very good but it already looks like one of those prequels that tries to cram too many interconnecting bits together and it hasn't even been on a whole season yet.
It looks like the pilot is free on iTunes so I'll give it a shot.

I REALLY liked the Constantine movie. I thought Kenunu definitely knew kung-fu for that one. I even liked the Beouf. And Peter Stomare as Lucifer? Fucking beautiful. Hell, even the pretty boy from Bush was good.
Tilda Swinton was great as Gabriel. Djimon as Midnight? Perfect.
Fuck, the whole cast was tits actually.
Yeah, my qualm was with the CGI demons.
I'm looking forward to this once it builds up some more episodes and I can binge it on Netflix.

Re: Constantine the series
Constantine (film) suffered in comparison with the books. But viewed on its own, it worked well. The main problem with it was that the fans had a lot of expectations, and well, it didn't meet them. Same old story.
From what I hear the series is a little closer to the books, apart from having to basically censor his smoking...

I had never read the Hellblazer books and only had a passing familiarity with the lore, so I guess it worked for me.

Same here. I've read some since then though.Havok wrote:I had never read the Hellblazer books and only had a passing familiarity with the lore, so I guess it worked for me.
I watched the pilot and I liked it. Constantine is an entertaining character. I'm still waiting to see if they have him be as much of a dick as he was in the movie and in the books. So far in the pilot he's a little sympathetic because he knows he fucked up and in doing so a little girl is in Hell. Plus he's got an angel fucking with by reminding him that he's damned because of it.
So far they haven't technically shown him smoking but they have shown him messing with his zippo lighter a fair amount, and I did see him stubbing out a cigarette in an ashtray at a bar at the beginning of a scene. If ever there was a character on network TV that they should be able to show smoking it should be Constantine. I mean in the books and movie it works out for him in the end but it's not like anyone watching is going to be able to weasle out of lung cancer in the same way.

Supposedly they are working on a Lucifer TV show. I'm not sure if it's supposed to cross over with Constantine or not.

A Lucifer TV show? Shit. I'm not sure they can do that series justice. Constantine, at least, is a little more... grounded, so to speak. Lucifer is on an entirely different level.

The pilot is currently free for viewing on nbc.com for a limited time, so that's another place to view it.Tsyroc wrote:It looks like the pilot is free on iTunes so I'll give it a shot.
I've noted that US TV stations are allowing folks to view quite a few current shows on line. There may be a delay of a day to a week before it's available free, and usually they're only up for a couple weeks, but it's a way to follow a show if you so desire.

Re: Constantine the series
So episode two and I'm really liking the series so far. I actually hope it does well enough that we get a season 2.

They are also working on a sandman TV show - for about the same amount of time, meaning since over 8 years. Doubt either will ever materialize.Tsyroc wrote:Supposedly they are working on a Lucifer TV show. I'm not sure if it's supposed to cross over with Constantine or not.

If you have a character that smokes, but the best actor doesn't smoke, what options are left ?

Well, in episode 2, he puts a cigarette in his mouth and is about to light it(in his hotel room, no less) when he is distracted by a visitor.

Re: Constantine the series
I was reading about the series on.... I have no idea where, Geeks of Doom or something. They were talking about how the smoking is such an integral part of his character, but American TV codes prohibit portraying it too often or whatever. Something like that. So they have had to come up with a good number of work-arounds. Show him stubbing out a cigarette as he walks onto the scene, have him paused in the act of lighting up, light up right as the scene ends, and so forth.
Interesting way to approach it, I suppose, but in this case I feel the prohibition on cigarettes and smoking has more potential to hurt the story and character portrayal than it supports the anti-smoking mindset. I mean, one of the best and most well-known Hellblazer storylines has him almost dying from lung cancer, and that crops up every now and then. It's a pretty good warning in and of itself.

Depends on whether they go with that particular stoyrline, but I don't see it as a huge deal. How often did they really show him smoking in the comics?Elheru Aran wrote:I was reading about the series on.... I have no idea where, Geeks of Doom or something. Fucking chimney for the first decade or so. Since the oughts he's tapered it off a bit. He quits on and off though. New 52 version is still a chain-smoker. It's not a huge deal mind you, it's just kind of annoying.General Zod wrote: Depends on whether they go with that particular stoyrline, but I don't see it as a huge deal. I think they can still work it in. Maybe throw in how growing up near the mines fucked up his lungs and it's all adding up.Elheru Aran wrote:Fucking chimney for the first decade or so.
