He should not have thought he had the upper hand anymore when Robert was about to die. Ned was a good guy but he could gone for a little less honor and pride and more pragmatism. Regardless of whether or not he really wanted to support Renly he should have fled the capital with him.

I really feel like an idiot for not noticing this earlier.

I personally wasn't a fan of that so much, Tyrion despises that song as we know from Season 1.

We do? Must have missed it - where does he say it?

But he's walking into the room all cocky and getting ready to tell everyone that (a) he came from Tywin's camp and (b) Daddy appointed him as his stand-in.

The inn where Catelyn seizes him. The bard (who later gets his tongue ripped out) offers to sing Rains of Castamere, Tyrion says nothing would be better to ruin his appetite.

I don't remember it, but I haven't rewatched the show, and it's been longer since I picked up the books. Even so, have you never found yourself whistling/humming a song you hated? Especially when you hate it for contextual reasons, rather than any objection to the song's style.

But so does Cersei, so he could have been doing it to annoy her.

Oh wait, nope I fucked up. In the inn the bard offers to sing of Tywin's "victory at King's Landing" (i.e. sack of an unsuspecting and defenceless city), not Rains of Castamere.

I'm pretty sure he still hates it from the books though, but that's different.

Oh, and these are all on the blu-ray (BEST SPECIAL FEATURE EVER) but for viewing pleasure, narrated by the cast:-

Lot of things we already knew, basically. But I'm sure they help new fans of the show understand what's gone on before.

I forgot how annoying the guy playing Viserys sounds.

I think you meant "new fans of the series". The lion's share of what's in those videos is nowhere in the tv show. Even though I knew it all already, the cast narrating was awesome.

He means "Known to anyone who reads the books" I think. (Which was kinda my reaction - the history of Westeros and the rest of the world is very very rich and could easily be fleshed out a bit without stamping on possible continuity issues too badly, it would have been nice to get a bit more detail).
And maybe a stronger slant on things. PResumably, they wanted to avoid dropping facts from books 3,4 (but also stuff from books 1,2 could have been added easily :( ).

Neato. Shame I don't have a BD player :P.

Yes, I meant fans brought in by the TV show who haven't read the books.

I agree the cast narrations, with the exception of the Targareyean bits, was excellent.
