Erm there's a brooding Prince of Melnibone out here with a moaning sword that's bigger then he is, wanting to know why he's not been mentioned?

He's more of a cleric really, but Cadderly Bonaduce is very cool.

Who is this Karsus?

Just wondering because there was a guy called 'Karsus the Archwizard' in Shadows of Undrentide (Newerwinter nights add on). He was stuck in somekind of a hell and was whining about how he appereantly accidentaly destroyed something called the 'Netheril Empire'.

That is him!!

He is the wizard, that founded the Karsus enclave in Netheril. The empire of Netheril was an empire of magic, the rules that govern spellcasting were different back then, mages were capable of casting >9th level spells. And they used a mana based casting system.

They could invert mountains, and build cities on the floating cones of rock.

And Karsus destroyed it. He developed and cast a spell called Avatar, that stole the power from and killed Mystryl, the godess of magic. This shut off the flow of magic, causing te cities to fall to the ground, and the influx of power(Mystryl was one of the most powerful gods) killed Karsus.

Mystryls reincarnation, Mystra changed the weave of magic to the casting system you use now...

It's worth a little emphasis for Karsus.

His first spell was cast when he was 2 years old.

He created material called Heavy Magic, which multiplied the power of a spell a good hundred times, and held it. A simple candle-lighting spell exposed to this stuff created a raging inferno worse than Meteor Swarm.

He was the most powerful wizard of the most powerful magical empire in AD&D. How powerful was Netheril? Read the D&D Calc's/Notes thread that's stickied.

He casually plucked people and objects from the past. So casually he forgot about it a few seconds later.

He was completely fucking mad.

He cast a spell that killed a God. Not a weak little demipower, or under a special circumstance like the Time of Troubles, or with the help of a God. He killed the Goddess of Magic, in her prime, despite the fact she held the power he drew off of. Does this explain how powerful he is? I hope so.

Anyway, following the chaos of that horrible instant(The novel Dangerous Games reveals the real reason his spell failed.. He killed Mystryl, yep. Kept magic in check. Yep. Was about to re-open the Weave and restore Netheril to it's glory. But a lesser mage really, really, really needed to leave, casting a time-travel spell that destabalized Karsus' concentration, destroying magic for just enough time to obliterate his precious Empire...), magic was re-written and split in two by Mystra. The only source of 'whole' magic, that is, magic capable of casting 10th+ level spells, exists as a lump of rock called the 'Karsestone', Karsus petrified heart. And what happens to that thing is still spoiler material..

Karsus is the biggest example of hubris in D&D mythology. Worse, because he nearly succeeded.

I don't think I should. It'd be really quite unfair.

The novels are the Coming Of The Archwizard's trilogy. Trust me, these are good novels. The series goes Summoning, Siege, Sorcerer. The new Forgotten Realms coverstyle, too. These are good novels. After all, it's Netheril's last survivors coming back...

Besides Gandalf, obviously, Gerald Tarrant, the Hunter from C.S. Friedman's Coldfire trilogy, Raistlin and Fizban. Once upon a time I might have said Elminster, but I really can't stand him or almost any of Ed Greenwood's characters after his later works (such as the Elminster books, bleurrggh...).

Then there's Vanyel Ashkevron from Mercedes Lackey's Valdemar books, or more accurately I should say that I like the Vanyel portrayed in the songs of Valdemar even better.

And as much as I hate Terry Goodkind's work, I liked the characters Zedd and Adie.

Does the person have to be totally fictional, or just that they were turned into a sorcerer in the fictional version of their story?

Why?? Have you written a fanfic where you are an all-powerful sorceress?

There will always be a special place in my heart for that magnificent bastard, Raistlin Majere. He may not have the raw power and talent of this Karsus fellow (I mean really, now...), but damn it all, he worked and strived and suffered for his chance to slay a god. He would have done it, too, if it wasn't for the fact that it would have been a hollow and self-defeating victory...

Lina Inverse kicks ass, too.

Bah, Gandalf is nothing to the knowledgable power behind Zifnab/Fizban. And Gandalf is nowhere near as powerful.

I quite agree, Raistlin's weakness made him a very well-rounded character. Karsus was simply insanely powerful and insane.

My personal favorite is, however, a Netherese. Not an Archwizard, though. The Steward of one, named Candlemas. Sure, he never made his own flying city or slew a God, but he was a lovable character who suffered and truly changed into a better person, before sacrificing himself to try and undo his mistakes.

*sniff*
