Marvel vs DC (movies)

Post by Havok »

Why is it that Marvel is pumping out movies and DC is dragging ass so hard in the last decade or so?

Marvel: 16
Blade 1, 2, and 3
Dare Devil
Elektra
Fantastic Four 1 and 2
The Hulk
Spider-Man 1, 2 and 3
X-men 1, 2 and 3
Ghost Rider
The Punisher

DC: 4
Constantine
Batman Begins
Superman Returns
V For Vendetta

Hell, even Dark Horse has had 3 movies, Sin City, Hell Boy and 300.

So what's the deal with this?

I think you're missing some. Road to Perdition for instance. And the rest of the Batman movies. From what I remember, as shitty as some were, they made a ton of money. And Superman 1-4. Timing can affect it since you left out like eight movies right there.

It may be that DC has more non-superhero movies. That said, it looks like they may be having trouble during their core characters into franchises, which Marvel had a lot easier time to do. Which may make them less willing to try again after they failed.

Making more movies is both a good and bad thing. On one hand, Marvel is obviously making more money, and having an easier time giving its characters mainstream exposure. On the other hand, quite a few of these Marvel movies are mediocre or crappy. I would rather not see a movie made if it's not done right.

DC seems to forget that they have characters OTHER THAN Batman and Superman (and Catwoman doesn't count :x ). Seriously, there's no reason why they couldn't make a decent Flash movie... hell Lobo could work, but it's always Batman or Superman.

Marvel is doing with their movies what they do with their "X Tard" titles, which is make a ton of different ones, throw them at the wall, and see what sticks. Some good, but most bad.

Uh, Road to Perdition? History of Violence? I don't think they have forgotten.

I didn't forget those movies I was using a 10 year span, give or take a year.

And oh jebus, I forgot about Catwoman Supes, thanks for reminding me.
:banghead: Get it out, get it out!!!

I didn't know Road to Perdition was a DC adaption, but I did forget about Violence. So that gives D.C. 7

My point is that by taking a time period you can artificially show different things. Expand the time, and DC comes off with more. And Batman and Robin was 1997 if I remember right.

I think perhaps in response to failures in the past, they've been working harder on making their movies and taking more time. How long was Superman Returns in production? So it isn't suprising that they are taking it slow. It seems like they are catching up though. Supermax. The proposed JL movie. The Dark Knight.

Anything else I'm forgetting? Some of the lesser known comic movies in development might be DC imprints, but I don't know. I think it comes down to DC trying to do it right, but with some wins under their belt, they are trying more now. At least, that's the impression I get.

Ok well If I expand the time frame, you add 4 Batman movies and 4 Superman movies. While that jumps the movie number up, but it doesn't catch up with the sheer amount of characters that Marvel has gotten out there.

Wasn't there a period where Marvel was basically surviving solely due to the performance of their movies?

I thought so too. They went through Chap 11 and I think the money from Blade and Spidey helped the company survive.

Then won't you have to add the two captain America movies, Nick Fury, and some other ones two marvel side?

Sometimes Men In Black is listed as a Marvel movie. I think it's because MIB was a Malibu comic and Marvel bought Malibu.

Mystery men is a good movie to see, so lets not bash quality.

I think the main difference is that Marvel is a smaller company and feels that smaller films that turn a small but respectable profit are worthwile to them. DC, on the other hand, is owned by the mega-corporate behemoth of AOL/TimeWarner. Therefore, their film strategy is that they MUST produce mega-blockbusters. A Green Lantern, Flash, or Wonder Woman movie would almost certainly turn a profit, but it's doubtful that any one of those would bring in over $200 million and launch a multi-film franchise.

I don't agree with the DC decision on this. I would like to see as many DC super-hero movies as possible. However, if they're going to be dreck like Catwoman, I'll stick to the vast library of animated series. *There* is where DC whips the crap outta Marvel. Marvel has started pursuing more of the animated features, but DC is getting ready to launch animated adaptations of some of their most popular books, so I think DC will still come out ahead there.

It seems to me that Dark Horse has almost caught up to DC in terms of movies in the last decade

not counting Mask I, and Barbed Wire (I'm sure those were before '97)

we've gotten:
Son of the Mask
300
Hellboy
Sin City
