I think the idea of the New Republic being embroiled in a series of minor conflicts as they try to crack down upon the various Imperial Warlords would have been a much greater story. I hated what they did with Dark Empire, making Palpatine come back. Things would have been much more interesting if he'd have stayed dead and the various warlords duke it out until the Imperial Remnant became a fully fledged state in the wake of the Pentastar Alignment's creation.
