Looks like Ghostery can no longer block Youtube ads. What to replace it with?

Post by AMX »

What it says - I'm looking for another ad-blocker / anti-tracking software.

I'm currently using Chrome, which may be part of the problem - I suppose I can switch back to Firefox if it helps, I can't quite remember what Mozilla did that pissed me off enough to make me switch to Chrome.

Anybody got advice for me?

What's wrong with ad block plus. It seems to work for me.

UBlock origin, it's a chrome and firefox plugin, still works great, still made by an angry man who hates popup adds.

ISTR some brouhaha about their default whitelist - something about advertisers paying to be included?

Could be true. But so far it blocks all youtube ads, so I don't have a problem with it for what I browse.

I use YouTube Red. It blocks every YouTube ad, guaranteed.

Isn't that a pay service though?

It is indeed! I watch a lot of YouTube, and think that people who create the content I enjoy should be paid for the service they provide. Ad-supported freely-viewable content is one way to do that; actually paying them is another.

That's fair. However if you only watch Youtube occasionally (say for a movie trailer, a funny video that someone links to on FB, whatever) and just want a way to eliminate ads...

It's also not available over here.

uBlock Origin seems to be working fine.

uBlock Origin works fine. If you also use Flashblock and set it to block HTML5 video in addition to Flash, then no youtube at all for you, except for sound. But Flashblock is great for nuking all the autoplaying bullshit video clips that a lot of sites these days use.

I can recommend http://www.chromeactions.com/index.html

Has lots of features for tailoring your Youtube experience including removing ads and dealing with playlist autoplay.

Works across Chrome, Firefox and Opera.

Note that ublock origin is different from ublock (without origin). ublock origin is the good™ one whereas ublock is evil™ for reasons that I once knew but forgot.
