The only reason I'd be wary of the American Revolution as a period for Assassin's Stabby as a period is that you colonials didn't really have that much in the way of cities to freerun around in at the time. Whereas the other persistently rumoured period of Revolutionary France would have been really cool to play around in (and would have allowed the end of the series to turn the themes on their head, because la terreur could have been about the assassins ascendent and getting it horribly wrong, ceding the world to the templars and setting the stage for the modern world stuff)

As it is, Assassin's Creed is all about settings relatively unexplored by vidyagames, and the American Revolution fits that bill (musketry being a bit bit dull for FPS....)

I fail to see how setting it during the American Revolution is a bad thing?

Philadelphia and Boston were fairly large cities during the era. At least the size of the cities we ran around in during the earlier games. Large is a relative term though, Americans lived rurally during the era.

Perhaps they're intentionally aiming at a rural game play area this time though. The American Revolution was characterized by events which largely transpired away from major cities and population centers. Parkour in trees and forests I guess?

So I'm guessing you missed the giant crosses and crescents that were throughout the first 4 games?
I meant on the cover of the game. I'm not sure how you could think that plastering the Star Spangled Banner all over the game artwork is at all in the same league as crosses and crescents that the hero is rather clearly not associated with.

Anyway;

This, in combination with the flag, is why I have low expectations that the game isn't going to be mindless American cocksucking. The founding fathers were Assassins. I should've seen this coming but I guess I expected better.

And it's not already ridiculous that Machiavelli and Leonardo Da Vinci already were Assassins or worked with the Assassins? Who cares?

Really, the series started out with two orders fighting for dominance through time, involving a centuries old conspiracy.

It was over the top from the get-go.

Hmmm, yes, I can see how a game made by a bunch of Quebecois would inevitably devolve into American cocksucking. I'm sure everyone also remembers how AC1 portrayed the Saracens as pure and noble defnders of their holy land. Or was it the crusaders? Ah, shit, they were both led by evil bastards and you killed a shitload of both groups. Or maybe how the Assassins never worked with anyone morally questionable, like Caterina Sforza or Lorenzo D'Medici. Shit, wrong again.

I rule.

-New guy is named Ratohnhaké:ton (colon included). Calls himself Connor. -Son of a colonist man and Indian woman.

-Not playing for ether side of the war, just his own. Seeks retribution for the downtrodden. Developers said they purposely strayed away from trying to make this The Patriot: The Game

-Is much more of a predator than previous assassins, sticks low to the ground and has completely new animations for everything he does because of it.

-Can dual-wield tomahawks.

-Friends with Ben Franklin. George Washington and Charles Lee also make prominent allies.

-There's a mission where you participate in the Valley Forge battle. Another during the great fire o New York. "Many famous battle locations will be experienced by the player."

-Boston and New York are major locations.

-Tree running

Some of those details make me less perturbed. My main concern was that it was going to be just relentlessly AMERICA FUCK YEAH.

Magazine scans. It ought to be at my house when I get home.

The Valley Forge thing is probably just a misstatement. I'll check later.

I'm honestly most interested to see how they'll integrate increased gunplay and "rural parkour" into the game than anything else.

Guns should still be fairly limited I would think, muzzleloading pistols and long guns isn't exactly friendly to John Woo style shit.

The games are heavily melee centric and I imagine they'll be staying that way. Still I can't imagine them not integrating flintlock weapons into the combat system now. AC2 hinted in the direction of muzzle loading weapons and Revelations I think finally had a crossbow.

Apparently the wilderness area you play in will be 1.5 times the size of Rome, and will change dramatically from season to season.

Oh yeah, there will be seasons in the game, too.

Is that supposed to be a 'feature'?

I wonder if they'll keep their fantastically ahistorical attitude towards the gods of America. I can't wait for the Ben Franklin freedom copter.

They've stated they're not using Franklin for the purposes of convenient inventor and have other plans instead. Washington also had a piece of eden so it's not guaranteed he's a good guy.

Considering how they treated natives elsewhere I think they might have different opinions on that.
US-Indian relations have been way too complex to simply say that associating an Indian with the American flag is insulting. Don't forget that every conflict the US has ever been in has had Indians fighting for the United States, including the Indian Wars. So, one can't say universally that American Indians are going to feel insulted about this. The Iroquois Confederation, for instance, was split with 3 tribes siding with the UK, 2 tribes siding with the American Colonists.

Let's not forget, though, that many Europeans lived alongside the Indians and adapted a lot of fighting techniques and weaponry from the Indians as well (and they also tended to marry Indian women, as the game acknowledges with the assassin's heritage).

The crossbow was in AssBros, which had what I felt was more of an emphasis on ranged weapons relative to AssRev. As it is the pictures of the game floating around indicate that Red Coats will typically fight with flintlocks with bayonets attached and one of the things Connor can do is grab dudes to put them in the way of guys taking potshots.
