Is there enough breathing room for my pc tower here?

Post by Superman »

Since I've blown up computers before from a lack of ventilation, I thought I had better get some more opinions about this. The PC I put together here is actually pretty nice, but the tower is older and sort of oversized. I'm wanting to run it from inside this desk space, but I'm not sure there's enough breathing room.

Yeah, the tower looks like crap. I've set all this up in my mancave, so I don't care. I like it. I'm probably just going to take off the front doors anyway.

Is there enough space to keep the PC from overheating or should I move it?

There's less space around it than I would be comfortable with, but it depends a lot on the airflow setup and where all the ventilation grilles are. IF it only has ventilation in front and at the back, the setup is not too bad as long as you do have good airflow on that axis.

Thanks.

I think I'm going to go ahead and risk it. Do you know a good free program I can use to monitor the core temp? Maybe I'll have a chance if I keep an eye on it.

From the looks of it, that has a solid front. If the intake grid is on the bottem, try putting it on little coasters to get about 1/4 of an inch clearance between the bottem of the front of the case and the shelf it is sitting on. If it's on the sides of the front ignore that :P

Don't forget to make sure there is somewhere for the exhaust to go.

Actually, the front doors are closed in the pic. This is what it looks like with the front doors opened. I might just take them off completely.

It also has a vent fan on the side and back. I think it actually does a pretty good job with the ventilation, I just wanted to make sure the space wouldn't be too tight. I've got some slider coasters I can put under the feet. Those should help with moving it around too.

Thanks!

What's the back of the cabinet look like? If it's not open, then the waste heat will circulate around the cabinet and back around the computer rather than out the back.

If it's closed but flimsy cardboard, just cut a good vent hole and it should be good.
