Fuckshit. 360 slowly dying. Replacement options?

OK, my 360 is on the way out again. And once again the fault appears to be with the DVD drive it's flat out refusing to read discs at times and when it does performance can best be described as "choppy" during game (if I didn't install or trying to install) or DVD playback.
So, what current PAL versions of the console have a drive that doesn't suck? And does anyone have a better idea of if/when the rumoured 360 slim might be coming?
