Anti-virus question - is AVG still the best?

Does anyone have any numbers on how well each one protects you ?

In saying that, I recently got fed up with all the popups Avira was pushing at me. The full window saying buy Avira was fine, the popup above the system tray telling me to buy was pushing it. Then came the competition and 'join us on facebook' popups, which were not.

Microsoft already has my money, while other free anti-virus programs are just there to sell the full version, so MSE became the obvious next choice. Unless MSE starts throwing adds at me, or someone can show that its protection is way worse than other free options, I'll be sticking with it.
