I'm stuck on 56K till at least August due to constraints at work. I work for a university, and one of my projects is behind a separate firewall from the rest of campus. As I can't use both the main campus VPN that 80% of my work requires and the animation VPN at the same time, I dial into the university's modem pool to bypass the main VPN and just use the animation VPN to reach the monitoring apps for those clusters. I'm on call 24x7 so I need to at least keep the monitoring pages for the various clusters I run open all the time.

3M/768K via Verizon DSL.

If/when I manage to move out, I'll move into a place with access to FIOS, at which point I'll have 20M/20M.

Another nice thing of moving from Minnesota to Fairfax, VA (other than the more bearable winters) is that I now have Verizon FiOS; fiber to the Optical Network Terminal box on my basement wall, then it's coax to the router, and finally Cat5 copper ethernet from there.

I have their 20mbps down / 5mbps up plan, plus some 300 regular and 83 HD channels for the TV service, for a combo-pack discount special of $80 per month.

1.5 down, about 200K up. It's divided among 5 computers though :P

I'm using university internet too, and USC's network gives me 9.5 megabits down, and 9 megabits up.

So does this mean we can stop putting up the 56K warnings?

The 56k warnings also let people with a small monthly transfer limit know that opening the thread will use more of their bandwidth than other threads. So it is still useful to me.

Without wanting to open the argument, the argument is that there's no need for that warning in the AM&P subforum where almost every single thread has a ton of images.
It's different for, say, Shep uploading a 1 MB PDF or a dozen scans of battleship innards in OP.

The main point of my post was to make sure people realised that there are reasons for the 56k warning that apply to people with faster connections. Anything more than that is detail that I don't want to get into if I don't need to.

Though I would think that a music thread in AMP would be 56k safe because opening the thread would not load any large files.

I've got unlimited 5 Mbps down, 1 Mbps up cable. Could get FIOS or 24 Mbps down, 1 up DSL, but switching providers at this point would be more trouble than it's worth and I don't need anything faster.

Currently my internet connection is a weird Huwai telephone set that also acts as a GPRS modem. According to the back of the packaging box writing it is capable of upto 256K but my shitty telephone company rarely delivers even a fraction of that.

Regarding the 56K warning don't forget people who access the board from mobile phones with data plans that charge by the kilobyte. One wrong click on an AM&P thread from my Nokia and I could be looking at a few US cents equivalent gone in matter of seconds.

My ISP supplies me with an 8 meg connection, unfortunately the crappy phone line and inadequate exchange throttle it down to 1 meg, dropping lower at peak times when the exchange gets overloaded.
Fortunately I went for the Premium service so I get priority on the ISPs servers during busy times and a seperate dedicated tech support number (no getting put on hold when I call :D)
Oh and they're based in Bath only 40 miles away so no fricken call centre in India bullshit, I get put through to someone the next county over who can actually do something about any problems I have.

6Mbit down/2Mbit up w/ Cox Cable, burstable to higher for short periods. Don't see the need to upgrade to 15/2.
