Dwarves toiled away in a diamond mine. They wore chainmail and carried pick axes, but they were still dwarves… as such they were singing

We dig dig dig dig dig dig dig dig we dig the whole day through. In a MINE in a MINE its what we like to do. We work work work work work we work the whole day through in a MINE in a MINE where a million diamonds… SHINE

As they sung one dopey looking dwarf got his pickaxe stuck, and as he puled it out the rock wall collapsed to reveal something so terrible…. It was all he could do to shake off the fear and escape. He motioned feverishly to his comrades, but they couldn’t understand him, as he was speechless with fear. Then it arose from the darkness and in unison they screamed

BALROG!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Dopey was the first to die, the balrog's whip grapped him,a nd incinerated him

the other Dwarves scrambled to the cave entrance

...Meanwhile at the diplomatic conference....

Astinius closed his eyes for a monent

"Oh hells... seven dwarves jsut released a balrog in a diamond mine on Krynn"

He disappeared

Shelton raised an eyebrow -- yet again -- and asked, "Did you really need to deal with that yourself? If you could feel it all the way out here then surely wizards closer in your empire could have seen and dealt with it."

High Priest Jenurax sat in the heart of his great temple-ship, watching the hideously twisted humanoids emerge from their cells, dripping with nutrient fluid. They hissed and growled, and looked at their new bodies. Some even tried jumping, banging their heads into the low ceiling. He could feel the energy pulse from their minds, full of anger and hatred that would soon be tempered into a deadly mental sword. This new patch of Paladins was vastly improved over the older ones; these were shorter, more dexterous, and leaner. Instead of the usual bony-white exoskeleton, they had black metal plates grafted onto their skin, covering every inch of their bodies. Sensor masks were placed over their faces by robotic arms, while acolytes thoroughly inspected every one. The acolytes brought out dozens of massive weapons that had to be carted in, then grafted them onto arms and shoulders. Finally, with syringes dripping, the acolytes injected a clear fluid into the Paladins. This was the chemical, that when triggered, would send a flood of adrenaline surging through them. Jenurax smiled.
Let the heathens believe they won't face God's wrath. They will be wrong in the end....

The ambassador stood up from his chair, and turned to leave, before he left he turned and said.
"Oh, the Political Prince also told me to remind you that in a month there will be the Monacoran hosted Grand Ball, we host it every ten years and all powers are invited as usual, but if more then a few come it will be a first. Also two weeks after that there will be a weapons expo and trade meeting in Japan, all are welcome but you must clear everything that comes in with the army first. Enjoy your time here, please reserve as soon as possible."

In a fortress in the Krynnish city of Sancrist Malathrax the Red Dragon sat, surrounded by a circle of black robed wizards. Btweenn them all lay a clutch of dragon eggs. 10 eggs in all.

the mages began to chant

Infactomele sestrival sectar norvel levoth cantrilae plaths wehbrildar...

This chant repeated itself for a 24 hour period. Once the chant was complete the red dragon screached a command and the eggs hatched to reveal 13 young draconians. 6 Bozals(spellswords) 6 Kapacks(arcane archers) and 1 Aurak(combat mage) when they grew up they would be a squad in a legion.

Some light years out from Verling station a convoy of Psilon ships, freighters and escorts, powered towards the trading post under interphase, they called out with Ansible (instant communication) of their imminent arrival, and broadcasted their manifests.

(Some 25 freighters
3 cruisers, 10 destroyers)

::::::::Diplomatic conference::::::

"Well if there is no other buisness, i'll depart. Good day to you all"

The ambassador turned to the commander of his security detail

"Contact the ship and tell them we're ready to leave."

::::::Emperor's Royal Palace, Carulan::::::

Emperor Reinhasshu (Yes, this is the same guy from STGOD MK 1) sat in a meeting with his advisors

"How goes the Naval build up?"

"Well m'lord, we should be up to one third pre-war strength by the end of next year. If I may ask, why are we rebuilding the fleet now? It's been one hundred years"

"Because other nations have emerged onto the scene Chalen, the fleet is no longer large enough to protect us. When we were one of the few remaining advanced nations in the galaxy, we could afford to take time rebulding the empire. Time is no longer a luxury we can afford, several of the other nations are strong, and at least one is openly hostile to us."

"What's the status of the colonization effort in the Cration system?"

"Three planets are ready to support small colonies, and the Arcane Empire's terraforming mages have arrived at the designated colony world. The asteroid belt has been split in two, with us mining one half and the Jardanians mining the other. As per the terms of the treaty, we only have fifteen patrol destroyers in the system."

"Then everything is going well. I hope it lasts....."

A destroyer and several fighters broke from Verling's orbit. "Hailing Psilon convoy, this is Captain Cranmer of the Republican destroyer Starfire. You are expected. Manifests received, you are clear to proceed to the station pending inspection. Your payment and exchange goods are waiting." Two fighters peeled off and flew close in to your ships, their pilots and sensors scanning for hidden weapons or unauthorized cargo. "Uh... A little heavy on the escort, aren't you? Expecting pirates, or are the Jardanians giving you trouble? Our ambassador informed us that their admiral wasn't too happy about you giving us the contract instead of them..."

Crazy little gnomes in robes ran around the 9th planet in the Cration system

"whereshouldIputthisrod?"

"Putitovertherandmovethatmountain!!"

They completed the rod ciurcle and Proctives Move Mountain could be cast. They canneled the energy of the weave and moved a large mountain to a better location

"whereshouldthesestaffsgo?"

"theriverneedstogohere"

And a river flowed from the new mountain down to an ocean that gnome power-golums just created...

A lightyear ahead of them 5 "Ghost" class deep strike minelayers lay in wait, communicating by tightfocused lasers.
"Ghost-1, mines deployed in path of frighters."
"Roger that Ghost-5, that confirst field deployment."
"Confirmed, lets get out of here. These cloaks are supposed to protect us, but no taking chances eh?"

While the minelayers chugged away, a cloud of nearly undetcable mines drifted towards the frighters. Ready to make a micro-hyperspace jump towards them and explode when they got close enough.......

In the Cration system, the pre-fab station had been completed, and a small stargate was active. Allready asteroids were being shoved through to the homeworld where they would be refined in huge super-efficent processing centers.

On the bridge of the Starfire

A crewman looked up from his duty station. "Helm, sensors, we have unidentified energy signatures of some kind, bearing roughly 270 mark 20, margin of error 20 degrees each way. Its very weak, sir. Sounds like scatter from a ship's engine signature, not enough signal strength to determine who or what."

Captain Cranmer quickly strode over to stand behind the sensor station. "Lieutenant, anything?"

The sensor officer shook his head. "Nothing on that bearing, sir. Its like... Wait." He focused the beam. "Sir, multiple small objects appearing out of nowhere, dozens of them... Sir, I'm picking up multiple energy spikes. Looks like homing mines!"

"Order Spades 1 and 2 to take evasive action. Inform the Psilon convoy at once!" He turned to the forward bridge section. "Helm, power to the engines. Take us into a 90 degree turn to starboard. Sensors, try to pick up on where the hell those mines came from." He turned to go back to his command chair, then paused. "Oh, shields up!" He'd almost forgotten the new shield system refitted to his destroyer just three months before. He'd been towards the end of the refits. He shook his head at almost making such a mistake.

The bridge crew went into action. Engine power increased to 2/3rds as the reactors spun up the shields. The two fighters inspecting the convoy went into radical dives to get clear of the freighter formation as the destroyer started to turn to bring its broadside towards the mines' originating area. More fighters scrambled from the light carrier back in the planet's orbit, which promptly scrambled to get itself behind the planet as the cruiser Faraday came around and rocketed towards the potential combat zone.

"Stand by for flak bursts from the main railgun battery into the originating area." Short pause for the destroyer to come around. "Fire."

The destroyer's railguns spoke, firing a salvo into the general area as fighters swarmed around, over, and under it, searching for a target for the bombs burdening their hardpoints.

The mines crude compterse through.
Minefield under attack, targets not in range, inatiate self distruct to prevent capture and tracing.

The few mines that were in range of the convoy lept to their targets, and the rest self-distructed.

LASERS not comms. You can have a tightbeam laser no reading my messages.

Even if you did detect it, it wouldn't be any different from background radeation.

This is why we have an OOC thread, thank you.

<< Jormungandr Defense Force cruiser “Hangman,” Asteroid Belt, Jormungandr System >>

Captain Heiss yawned. Once again, his vessel had been set on system patrol duties- boring work. Jormungandr was wealthy as the single system fiefdoms went, and kept herself well defended. Heiss’s vessel was one of a half-dozen heavy cruisers which kept the world safe, even in today’s chaotic times. Never the less, Heiss found the duty tedious. Fly out to the asteroid belt, make a circuit of the mining facilities, and then jump back to Jormungandr- and then do it all again. No one would attack Jormungandr anyways- In addition to the sextet of heavy cruisers, the planet maintained an ageing but tough battleship and a trio of heavy orbital gun batteries. None of the local fiefdoms could even compare.

Then the alarms went off.

“Captain! Report from the Sargasso Mining Installation- they are under attack! They report five cruiser-sized vessels of unknown configuration, along with twenty escorts, also unknown models. They are talking to us via radio, sounds like their hypercomm antenna was blasted.”

“Contact Jormungandr Station, and relay the message to the Fleet!”

Heiss’s eyes narrowed into slits. The enemy must have hoped that they would be able to finish Sargasso off before the low-power emergency radio transmissions were noticed. They hadn’t counted on the Hangman being in the region- and now, with her hypercomm alerting the entire system, they would find themselves biting more than they could chew.

Space twisted, flashed, and then became normal again as every vessel in the Jormungandr fleet completed it’s tactical jump, falling in to formation near the invaders. Heiss dreamed momentarily of the good old days, when tactical computers were good enough to drop a fleet out right on top of their adversaries.

“Orders from the Admiral- all guns free, repeat, all guns free!”

Heiss rattled out orders. His vessel began to spin along it’s axis, it’s missile launchers sending a steady stream of projectiles towards the strange raider craft. He was rewarded as one of the small enemy frigates blasted apart.

“SIR! Contacts, realspace mass objects, moving in… sweet Christ, moving in at 30c!”

“That’s ridiculous, nothing can move in that fast, you must be…”

His voice was abruptly silenced as two Cataphracts dropped from Kincaid drive directly on top of the Hangman- a near-perfect tactical FTL maneuver. Their forwards batteries sounded instantly, shattering the craft instantly. Captain Heiss’ body was converted into an expanding cloud of gas, along with the entire mid third of the Hangman.
The rest of the fleet was beset, surrounded by a swarm of sleek, black Cruisers, and a swirling chaos of fighter craft. They lasted little longer.

Only an hour later, the first Ouster troop transports began falling on Jormungandr.

Captain Serval of the Dreadnought relished the thought if seeing combat... but this time, it would not happen in all likelyhood

The Council of Seven had decreed a new wave of expansions. And this time the world was inhabited by primitives. Roughtly at the technology level of 21st century earth. They would soon be incorporated into the Empire. Though, they were already within the Empires territory.

Casting tongues on himself, Captain Serval cast a spell that essentially forced a splice of the planets commun ications, and he began speaking. His voice translated into the planets various languages.

"Good day to you people of Bearth system. I am Captain Serval of the Arcane Empire. We have been manipulating events on your planet for some time and feel you are ready for annexation. You will be taught how to use magic, and will become a part of one of the most powerful empires in known space."

The people of the planet cheered. Magic using politicians had been inserted into the planets government and had been slowly working into the people the idea of joining the Empire and 90% of the population approved. SOme through standard diplomacy, some through suggestion spells.

However, the miliatary didnt, and the xenophobic president ordered the launch.

Missiles were fired up at the Dreadnought. They were quickly shot down, but they forced the Empires hand.

Several legions of troops were teleported down into the capital city. The ppulation cheered as their rather disliked presidents reisdence was bombarded by Fireball arrows....

Diplomatic Station

"Well, my dear colleagues, if that is all, I will depart. And regarding the Grand Ball, we gladly accept."

Nethington pulled out a small elipsoid metal object and put it before him. It hung there a few seconds, before it burst into four separate parts, and created a Farcaster Portal. It engulfed him and the Marines, and then vanished.
The Portal folded onto itself into nothingness.

The Demonstration of Force manipulated the local gravity field, and swallowed out, plotting a course for the Omega outpost.

Gladsheim Prime, Imperial Plaza

The Duke of Nethington took a seat at the table, which seemed to float in the swirling orange atmosphere just visible outside the office, and faced his Imperial Highness, the Empress Elana.
<<I know you just arrived and I have observed the meeting, I still want to talk to you in person about it>>, she datavised. <<What is your assessment?>>
<<It certainly seems to be a hostile galaxy out there. Some nations seem outwardly at least to be quite friendly, these Monacores for one. These magic-using powers are...obscure to say the least. A bit too showy for my taste, but not everyone has class or style. And some power are a possible threat...>>
The Empress chuckled. <<I know what you mean. All this showing-off of this Ambassador was so tactless. But then again all this believing in democracy and the like. Strange...>>
She turned towards Counsilor Nregunga. <<What's the status on the outpost?>>
<<Your Highness,>> his clear digital voice carried through Datanet, <<We have completed the 'Caster, and have integrated it into the transport net. We have reached Level-2 now, and the enlargement is in progress. We should have the outpost on City-level in 1 week.>>
<<Wonderful,>> she 'vised. <<Now excuse me, I have a meeting with Admiral Farshaw.>>

"SHIT!"
"Evasive Manuvers!"
"BELAY THAT ORDER."

The squadron leader remained calm.

"Their shoooting blind, route emergency power to the cloaking devices, and undergo minor evasive manuvers. Our best hope is to convince them that we arn't here long enought to escape."

Using the vastness of space to their advantage, the small vessiles began random movements. Weaving through the explosions, hoeping that their attackers would give up before they got lucky."

--

Power was rerouted, and abord the Starfire the energy signals vanished.

Fighters swooped around the target area, nimbly looping and weaving through the area, their powerful active sensor arrays pinging furiously. The two E-50 AWACS craft from the Starry Venture were up and pinging away as fast as they could at maximum power.

On board the Starfire, Captain Cranmer gave the order to cease fire. "We're not going to hit them now. Let the fighters do their jobs; the flak is only slowing them down."

"Yes sir." The railguns fell silent at once as the Faraday leapt past at maximum thrust. Her commander was not about to give up the chase, but nor was he about to waste precious ammunition on a fruitless shotgun attempt.

Aboard the Faraday

"Comms, put in a call to the Starfire. As I recall, they're carrying two nuclear tipped missiles among their loadout, correct?"

"Yes, Commodore Nellis."

"Relay this message to Captain Cranmer, level 2 encryption. Reconfigure one of your nuclear warheads for EMP pulse and launch it to the following coordinates," he said as he keyed a series of numbers into his keypad. "These ships will undoubtedly be well grounded, but the pulse should shimmer agaisnt their cloaks for a few seconds. They can't be running shields while cloaked. Shields up." The comms and shield officer both nodded and carried out the orders.

Aboard the Starfire

"Prepare to fire missile tube 11 on my mark. Set coordinates. Mark."

Down in the missile room, a switch was thrown. "Bird away, running hot, straight, and normal. Tracking on designated coordinates. The pulse should cover at least 5 kilometers in strength; we could possible get enough effect to spark the cloak at another ten beyond that, although the effect will be weaker as it gets further away."

"Acknowledged. Five seconds to detonation . Four... Three... Two... One... Mark."

The missile exploded, sending an energy pulse through the space around it. The fighters' navigational shields mostly held, though one or two that had not cleared the radius in time had a few systems shorted. The wave of electromagnetic energy spread outward... "Ready all guns," both commanders ordered at almost the same time.

The message from the Nashtar ship sent panic though the freighter fleet, but the military ships remained calm. Commodore Ferth had three freighters that were only carrying raw materials be evacuated and moved to the front. Under remote control they expanded their shields, weakening them but increasing the area to cover the front of the fleet. The mines interaction with them would make them obvious to a blind man, and all the point defenses could be brought to bear. It was hoped the shields would short the mines guidance system, but that generally worked on advanced missiles, not crude bombs. However the multitude of mass drivers and their explosive ordinance would likely protect the fleet.
