People in Hong Kong are protesting new laws enacted to restrict their
freedoms. Last week alone a crowd of 500,000 people marched through the
city in protest. The new antisedition bill, will threatens to make any
antigovernment comments a crime, is what the people of Hong Kong are
distraught over, and rightly so, because it stands to make Hong Kong into
an antidemocratic police state. The recent marches against the law are the
largest since the United Kingdom returned Hong Kong to mainland China in
1997. The government of China is worried, and rightfully so, because half a
million people marching is significantly larger then the infamous Tiananmen
Square protests 14 years ago. But what effects will these protests have on
Beijing's grip on Hong Kong and the rest of China? Are we seeing signs of a
new Chinese Revolution, or are these just ill-fated attempts to regain lost
freedoms?

Hong Kong has autonomy (at least officially), so I doubt the claims that this is a sign of Beijing influencing its power over the Hong Kong government. And in any case, these laws don't seem worse than the draconian laws of Singapore.
