Dude, these fucks willingly joined a gang of murderous raping pillaging monsters. Note the use of the word "willingly". This isn't politics. This isn't tossing journalists into prison because you don't like what they're saying about you, or storming the house of opposing party members, it's making sure that said fucks won't then go on to murder more people.

Involuntary psychiatric commitment requires that a person have a psychiatric diagnosis. What psychiatric diagnosis results from willingly joining a gang of murderous raping pillaging monsters?

I was criticizing the notion that throwing ISIS members into prison makes them political prisoners.

Because what you're describing is not just 'well, these people are clearly disturbed and need help', it is very specifically the abuse of the psychiatric system as a means of disposing of political prisoners. 'Let them back in the country, then involuntarily commit them. They are crazy. Why are they crazy? Because they joined ISIL.'

Also, yes, I am very well aware of da'esh's goals, purpose, and method. Those things do not justify the abuse of the psychiatric system to make political enemies disappear.

They joined a quasi-state organization that engaged in acts of state building and governance. That is a political act. Da'esh was a political entity as well as a terrorist one. The fact that we find their purpose and techniques abhorrent does not somehow render daesh a non-political entity, nor does it make what is done with its members after its defeat non-political. Even the question of bringing them back or leaving them there is fundamentally political.

I thought terrorism was the use of violence to achieve political goals. In which case, how is ISIS or any terrorist group not a political actor?

In any event, Loomer's right about psychiatry. Psychiatry and by extension the medical system shouldn't be used for political purposes. If they do have a known mental health condition, then yeah, mental hospital. But not all bad actors are automatically mentally ill. Some of them are just nasty pieces of work. Get them assessed for a psychiatric condition, but don't automatically assume they must have one because they joined ISIS.

Yes, perhaps I should have used criminal enterprise rather than terrorist entity for that point of distinction.
