House Republican Chip Roy blocks disaster aid spending

Post by PainRack »

The people, particularly in Texas, but people generally, are tired of the swamp, and this is a very swampy thing to do — have a vote on a Friday heading into Memorial Day weekend and after we recess, when we could have done our job yesterday when we had 435 members of Congress who should be here and should vote,” Roy told reporters, according to Roll Call. Roy, a fiscal conservative and member of the House Freedom Caucus, also expressed concerns about the disaster aid spending adding to the federal deficit.

.....

Some House Republicans, including Roy, were upset because the final package did not really give Trump any wins on either front. It ultimately included $1.4 billion in aid for Puerto Rico and stripped out the border aid completely, something Senate Republicans said they would consider at a later time
One House Republican is holding up $19 billion in disaster aid funding

Now. This is vox. So, they do tend to portray Republicans in a bad light. Seeing their cited source roll call and well....

In addition to process concerns, Roy told reporters he was upset negotiators dropped billions of dollars to help the Department of Health and Human Services process a surge of migrants at the southern border. At the same time, Roy said he was opposed to providing $19 billion that wasn't offset.
Yeah. Because border security wasn't involved, Roy is pissed enough to block disaster aid from reaching tens of thousands of Americans .

Fucking Chip Roy. House Republican. Texas.

Any Texans willing to call him and remind him what being an American and Christian means ?

The Republican party is a hate-fueled death cult, driven by its desire for absolute power over the "Other" at all costs. It should be renamed either the Fascist Party or the Sociopath Party- either would be more accurate than its current name, as the party has fuck all to do with (and is actively undermining on a daily basis) the Republican form of government.

Again, 18 months before he resigned, Nixon had a sky-high approval rating of 67%. Harvey Weinstein was winning Oscars until one day, he definitely wasn't."-John Oliver

So how true is the claim about it being done late and after recess without everyone there?

The package only passed the Senate after Richard Shelby withdrew his opposition for harbor maintenace... Not sure the deets.

Prior to that, the major sticking point was Trump refusal to negotiate with Democrats, first during the government shutdown and subsequently over the issue of increasing aid to Puerto Rico. The standard emergency funds for helping Puerto Rico expired after a year, so, Democrats wanted more aid and etc.

So.... Yeah. After shelby withdrew his opposition, the bill was sent late to the House. The House is STILL in session. But members have already left to go back home for Memorial day weekend and home politics.

Still, its also very clear this is just an excuse, as Chip Roy opposition in the past is about pork spending and how border security aid was delinked from this bill. Now, the border aid itself is a refugee issue, as increased numbers of refugees have overwhelmed local and federal agencies ability to care for them, especially those injured or sick from the long trek, so arguably, it does belong in a disaster aid spending. However, given the contentious nature and the Republicans stated purpose is for Borser security , with Trump national emergency allowing him to potentially divert such funds to the wall, the Republicans and Democrats essentially said lets vote on this later, pass this important bill now.

And Chio Roy says no. Fuck you.
