Sigh... my municipality's considering a bylaw to ban selling pot in the municipality. This is a time when I wish I'd won my campaign for council, because I'd certainly vote against it. Will be going to the upcoming council meeting to register my objections.

If that passes, how much do you want to bet that the pot shops in the surrounding cities and towns are owned and operated by the brothers in law of the ban proponents?

Knowing this municipality, it's more likely that they just want to "preserve the municipality's character", which basically means maintaining this community's pretensions of being one big upper crust residential neighbourhood. But that ship well and truly sailed when they allowed liquor stores- a double-standard I intend to point out publicly next Tuesday.

That too. See Bulloch County, Georgia. Or Bowie, Texas.

Or cigarettes, for that matter. The only difference between a pothead and a nichead is that there's relatively little controversy over legalizing nicotine.

Depends. Are they the pretentious upmarket sort of liquor stores that refuse to carry any wine that costs less than $50 a bottle and hold tasting sessions accompanied by fancy cheese and so on?

We have the same thing going on here. Most of the (wealthy and conservative) suburbs around Toronto are not only prohibiting the sale of marijuana, but also banning its use in any public place (which is similar to alcohol, but not tobacco). Of course, they conveniently forget to mention the fact that most of the illegal grow-ops in the area are already in their neighbourhoods, but I digress...

Still, we're not complaining. We're always chronically short of cash so if a bunch of rich suburban snobs want to come buy their pot from us rather than purchase it in their own neighbourhoods, they are more than welcome to.

I think there's a wine shop that's probably more like that, and a more general liquor store across the street from it.

That's probably snobby enough not to count as lowering the tone, then.

Hmmm, gap in the market here: Artisanal organic cannabis!

Can I interest you in helping set up Fairtrade Cannabis? There's enough lelgal market now that surely some tropical country should start growing it

I admit that I don't really know much about the topic or how that would work- my first thought is that I'm not sure how many tropical countries there are where growing it is currently legal.
