I wouldn't say everyone runs adblock, because some of these channels were getting good money before. I also ran ad block occasionally. I dare say some people if they are willing to support a channel, will disable ad block when watching it.

I run the shit out of adblock, because getting a 30 second commercial for a video that's less than two minutes is ridiculous.

The numbers are higher than you think, especially in the gaming space which is big on Youtube. Rates of running some kind of adblock are between 60-80% (I think Twitch have said something like 80% of their viewerbase use it, which is why Twitch streamers are much more frequently supported by subscription or donation, and Twitch have come up with several alternative streams).

Some channels were getting good money before, like some websites were, but advertisers overreached with too much intrusiveness and too little effort to keep out malware, so adblock became a part of standard web operating procedure for a lot of people. The money's moved, it's on Patreon, subscriptions, or sponsorship now.

Hell, Google are apparently working on an adblock as a default feature of Chrome. (which is shady, as they're also the web's largest advertising provider...)

Same here.

I do get ads when I watch YouTube through Apple TV though, but at least they are spaced out better and quite often can be skipped fairly quickly.

Even with Apple TV I'd say that ads generally come through much less than if I were watching regular television. Some of the ads are even for local businesses.

I have recently started donating through Patreon to channels I watch a lot. It's not a lot different than how I tend to watch regular TV, support wise, since if I find a show I like I'll subscribe through iTunes and then watch it when I have the time.
By the pricking of my thumb,
Something wicked this way comes.
Open, locks,
Whoever knocks.

I disabled adblock as I started to watch less music videos and more independent content. However, if the amount of revenue they receive per ad is now considerably paltry, then wasting my time even on a 15 second ad is pointless.

I am on Patreon and my total subscription to YouTube channels have now grown to five at $5 each. Two of them should be non-political/news channels, but they apparently still had their revenue cut as well which is bullshit.

Seeing what I and others I read here are doing, YT seems to risk shooting themselves in the foot losing eyes from loyal followers watching ads on channels they like if they decide to go the adblock + Patreon path.
I have almost reached the regrettable conclusion that the Negro's great stumbling block in his stride toward freedom is not the White Citizen's Counciler or the Ku Klux Klanner, but the white moderate, who is more devoted to "order" than to justice; who constantly says: "I agree with you in the goal you seek, but I cannot agree with your methods of direct action"; who paternalistically believes he can set the timetable for another man's freedom; who lives by a mythical concept of time and who constantly advises the Negro to wait for a "more convenient season."

If you do that, you were probably already more than they would have got from you on adsense ads regardless of the situation currently. In the past, you would be doing well if you got average $3-5 per 1000 views on your channel. So if you've watched less than 1000 videos on that channel and give them $5, that's more than you gave them on adsense.

Also, adsense money is partially based on the number of times someone clicks on the ad. So if you are not the kind of person who likes to click on ads (and I would imagine that's the case if you are considering using adblock), you would be contributing to less than that $3-5 per 1000 average. And you can't just click on ads you aren't interested in deliberately to support the creator, as google has algorithms for spotting that and deducting the clicks or simply blacklisting your ip or the creator. (Note that this only applies to adsense ads. Sponsors for example pay more.)

Update.

David Pakman is still reporting problems with the new algorithm. They are earning one third as before.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uqPU-OdpUP8

According to Grapheon, Pakman gets $5511 per month from patreon (it counts how much is donated, not how much is pledged). He also gets some money from membership, although we don't know how much he gets from that.

https://graphtreon.com/creator/davidpakmanshow

Secular Talk hasn't mentioned how much this is hurting him recently.
According to grapheon he gets $20,701 per month, which I think would be able to support his shows
https://graphtreon.com/creator/seculartalk

I also notice Secular Talk is using some different characters to avoid the algorithm. For example instead of writing terrorist, he tries to avoid the algorithm by writing terr0rist, or instead of porn, he writes p0rn. I wonder if it works.
