Trolling a rival college (local news)

The Houston Chronicle wrote:UT suspects sabotage after A&M-created maroon flowers pop up near tower
By Heather Alexander | April 10, 2014 | Updated: April 11, 2014 9:48am

President Barack Obama's visit to the University of Texas in Austin could be overshadowed by the emergence of a scandal of potentially epic proportions.

Maroon bluebonnets are taking over flowerbeds below the school's iconic tower. Officials fear their landscape has been infiltrated by longtime rival Aggies.

"There were just a few at first but now there's much more," said Markus Hogue, program coordinator for UT Irrigation and Water Conservation.

Hogue said his team had planted regular bluebonnet seeds all over the campus. It's only in the beds below the tower that the maroon ones are showing, leading him to believe that they were planted there deliberately.

"When we started seeing the maroon, I started researching it more, (that) led me to believe that it was more likely these seeds were created at A&M and brought over here," Hogue said.

Insert dramatic music here.

Over at the Texas A&M campus, horticulturalists confirmed Thursday that maroon-bonnet seeds were indeed bred by them after researchers spotted a few occurring naturally in the Texas countryside.

"They took red ones and isolated them, and continued to select them until there was only maroon left," said Skip Richter from A&M's agrilife extension center in Harris County.

Richter is just one of thousands of A&M scientists and specialists all over the state, leading some to suggest that they had plenty of opportunity to slip onto the UT campus, perhaps under cover of darkness, to spread their maroon interlopers.

Richter said he didn't know anything about that, but he said it is likely that someone did plant them deliberately.

"Somebody scattered the seed probably," said Richter. "You wouldn't have a bunch of one color sprouting up (otherwise)," he said, undoubtedly smirking.

Bluebonnets also come in white and pink but if they are put with blue ones all would naturally return to blue over time, according to Richter. A Texas flag once created out of different colored bluebonnets has now turned back to blue.

At UT, the opposite is happening. More maroon ones are appearing. It's led to much consternation from some students.

"Some find it cute," said Hogue. "Others say if they get too much they want them removed."

Hogue's team is preparing to stop the rival breed in its tracks by cutting off seed cases with scissors before they can propogate.

At A&M, though, the controversy has led to much hilarity.

Richter said the school also bred special maroon carrots, and is quick to point out that "God chose to put a maroon gene in (the bluebonnet family), but there ain't no orange one."
A bit of lighter news for the day.

I don't really see anything funny in vandalism.
It has become clear to me in the previous days that any attempts at reconciliation and explanation with the community here has failed. I have tried my best. I really have. I pored my heart out trying. But it was all for nothing.

Oh no. Flowers.

Adding more flowers (same type, only of a different color) to a beet is vandalism, now? What exactly did get destroyed?
A minute's thought suggests that the very idea of this is stupid. A more detailed examination raises the possibility that it might be an answer to the question "how could the Germans win the war after the US gets involved?" - Captain Seafort, in a thread proposing a 1942 'D-Day' in Quiberon Bay

It's the idea of being a jerk and messing with other people. Doing so is by definition unfunny unless you are a bad person or watchnig a comedy.

Does that include as part of a time honoured tradition of relatively harmless pranks between rival schools which maintains student and staff morale?

Yes. Any form of prank = evil.
I even have a personal burning hatred for April 1st.

Once when I was in high school, someone in the night painted a blue stripe along, or where double-lined through, every yellow traffic line in the center of town. Considering that afternoon out football team played some rivals whose colors were gold and blue, nobody looked too far for the culprits. But even as one of the "victims" of the prank, I was too amused and impressed to get mad. Besides, our team went out on the field with an air of righteous fury and massacred the opposition.

My favorite Story of a college prank was told by my Dad, and, to this day I am not sure wether to believe him...

Apparently he and about a dozen other students at his college had been planning this prank for over two months.
There was a disused storage room in the basement of the chemistry building that no one went into. Over the course of the two months they cleaned it up, painted it, Got in new furniture, and prepared to turn it into the Campus first CASINO.

In preparation they ran off about 200 mimeographed flyers advertising the "Casino" as well as manufacturing about a dozen different casino games. They had two Crapes tables, four Roulette Wheels a couple of other tables, and two Slot machines that bought from an old junk store.

On the appointed day, in between classes when the campus was at it's busiest, they had a group put up all 200 flyers and moved all the gaming tables and slots and such into the casino room and flew open the doors. And then RAN AWAY.
Supposedly by the time campus police broke it up there was close to fifty people in the room who had actually started gambling.
The Dean evidently strongly suspected my Dad and several others, but couldn't prove anything :P

Hey, at least this prank didn't result in the fire brigade turning out or someone's kitchen getting trashed.
There are hardly any excesses of the most crazed psychopath that cannot easily be duplicated by a normal kindly family man who just comes in to work every day and has a job to do.

We did our share of pranks in high school between cross-town rivals. We would dye their swimming pool red (our school color) for instance. The best ever was when the other school (Burbank) had their initial (B) written in chaulk in the hills above the school. One evening we took more chaulk and turned it into JBHS (our school initials). Visible to the whole city. I don't think anybody ever topped that one.

Harvard students did an amusing one recently where they posed as Yale students and gave a fake tour of Yale in which they touted the superiority of Harvard at every possible opportunity.
