Notorious Reddit Troll exposed

Post by Guardsman Bass »

One of Reddit's moderators and notorious trolls, Violentacruz, was exposed recently:
Gawker wrote:
Last Wednesday afternoon I called Michael Brutsch. He was at the office of the Texas financial services company where he works as a programmer and he was having a bad day. I had just told him, on Gchat, that I had uncovered his identity as the notorious internet troll Violentacrez (pronounced Violent-Acres).

"It's amazing how much you can sweat in a 60 degree office," he said with a nervous laugh.

Judging from his internet footprint, Brutsch, 49, has a lot to sweat over. If you are capable of being offended, Brutsch has almost certainly done something that would offend you, then did his best to rub your face in it. His speciality is distributing images of scantily-clad underage girls, but as Violentacrez he also issued an unending fountain of racism, porn, gore, misogyny, incest, and exotic abominations yet unnamed, all on the sprawling online community Reddit. At the time I called Brutsch, his latest project was moderating a new section of Reddit where users posted covert photos they had taken of women in public, usually close-ups of their asses or breasts, for a voyeuristic sexual thrill. It was called "Creepshots." Now Brutsch was the one feeling exposed and it didn't suit him very well.

But Michael Brutsch is more than a monster. Online, Violentacrez has been one of Reddit's most reviled characters but also one of its most beloved users. The self-described "creepy uncle of Reddit" has played a little-known but crucial role in Reddit's development into the online juggernaut it is today. In real life, Brutsch is a military father and cat-lover. He lives with his wife in the Dallas suburb of Arlington, Texas. There are many sides to Violentacrez, and now that I had Michael Brutsch on the phone I hoped to find out where the troll ended and the real person began.
***

I first became aware of Violentacrez last year, when controversy erupted over a section, called "Jailbait," that Violentacrez had created on Reddit dedicated to sexualized images of underaged girls. (Brutsch adapted the name from "Violent Acres," a popular anonymous blogger he was fond of in the mid-2000s.) Reddit, for the uninitiated, is essentially a social news site; with a free username, anyone can submit and vote on content and can do so anonymously. And anyone can start a forum on Reddit dedicated to their interests, known as a subreddit. Today, there are about 10,000 active subreddits out of nearly 100,000 total, spanning a dizzying array of topics from funny pictures, to Power Rangers, to pooping. If a post gets enough "upvotes," as they're called, it can be propelled to the front page of Reddit and a massive audience.

The breadth of topics and dedication of users has made Reddit, which calls itself the "front page of the internet," the single dominant force in internet culture today, boasting over 3.4 billion pageviews this August. It reached a new level of legitimacy last month, when President Obama held a Q & A on Reddit. These days, Reddit is mentioned in the same breath as Twitter and Facebook by pundits expounding on the power of social media.

But Reddit's laissez-faire attitude towards offensive speech has led to a vast underbelly that rivals anything on the notorious cesspool 4chan. And with Jailbait, Violentacrez decided to create a safe space for people sexually attracted to underage girls to share their photo stashes. I would call these people pedophiles; the Jailbait subreddit called them "ephebophiles." Jailbait was the online equivalent of systematized street harassment. Users posted snapshots of tween and teenage girls, often in bikinis and skirts. Many of these were lifted from their Facebook accounts and thrown in front of Jailbait's 20,000 horny subscribers.

Violentacrez and his fellow moderators worked hard to make sure every girl on jailbait was underage, diligently deleting any photos whose subjects seemed older than 16 or 17. Violentacrez himself posted hundreds of photos. Jailbait became one of Reddit's most popular subreddits, generating millions of pageviews a month. "Jailbait" was for a time the second biggest search term bringing traffic to Reddit, after "Reddit." Eventually, Jailbait landed on CNN, where Anderson Cooper called out Reddit for hosting it, and Violentacrez for creating it. The ensuing outcry led Reddit administrators to reluctantly ban Jailbait, and all sexually suggestive content featuring minors.

. . . . .
I cut the posting here short, because the full article includes details for words and the like that are banned here (such as racial slurs). You can read the rest at the link.

Not surprisingly, he was quickly fired from his job, unfortunately leaving his disabled wife without health insurance. I feel sorry for her, but not for him.

What do you think? I'm assuming that he actually is Violentacruz, since he hasn't bothered to deny the accusations.

That paragraph about the inappropriateness of photos of "tween and teenage girls, often in bikinis and skirts." strikes me as odd in that I can easily see it used to justify 'banning' tween and teenage girls from dressing that way in public. I assume in this case this means public or at least "publicly available" photos, since "private" shots are not appropriate to be out on the net just because you are of legal age.

In fact I think that's precisely the logic used to justify headscarves and burkas. :\

From the article
So it was no surprise that when news got out earlier this week that I was working on a story that would expose Violentacrez's real identity, other moderators on Reddit rallied to defend him. The popular politics subreddit led the charge, by banning all Gawker links.

"As moderators, we feel that this type of behavior is completely intolerable," they wrote. "We volunteer our time on Reddit to make it a better place for the users, and should not be harassed and threatened for that. We should all be afraid of the threat of having our personal information investigated and spread around the internet if someone disagrees with you."

Violentacrez is literally a terrible human being, and he wasn't just accepted on Reddit, he was in close contact with the admins who run the site, which is fucking disgusting.

Look at this. Look at it.

Yes, as moderators, you volunteer your time on Reddit to make it a better place for the users. Especially the racists, the misogynists and the pedophiles. Bravo, Reddit for having such an open and welcoming community.

Indeed. Basically the story is that guy acts like a complete asshole online and does things that, depending on his location, might be completely illegal, and then lets out enough information that he can be positively identified. When he is identified, he then suddenly faces a whole slew of consequences and he and his supporters whines that he shouldn't be penalized because he has a right to free speech.

Yeah, he does, so as long as he did not actually break any laws where he is, the government can't do anything to him, but that does not make him immune to the consequences from other parties. Such as being fired from his job, especially in an at-will employment state.

Good fucking riddance.

Well theres a difference between there being photos of tween and teen girls wearing bikinis/revealing clothing and creating a space specifically to gather photos of that nature to titillate the creepy sexual desires of adults who don't know them and should know better. Following on from your logic we would have to ban tween/teen girls from being dead because he ran a subreddit for photos of dead girls as well.

Every single instance of circle-jerk and online cronyism I've seen before, I have to admit, pales in front of defending a pedophile. Especially the bullshit about free speech. Arguments like this make Star Destroyer a little better. It may be considered appropriate to call somebody a motherfucker for being dishonest, but at least it ain't appropriate to run an entire subforum of child pornography because the admin is your pal.

Now, was "fuck your shit, Reddit admins" clearly seen in the above paragraph?

Dr. Trainwreck: As a medical diagnosis, pedophilia, or paedophilia, is defined as a psychiatric disorder in persons who are 16 years of age or older typically characterized by a primary or exclusive sexual interest in prepubescent children (generally age 13 years or younger, though onset of puberty varies).

Ephebophilia is the primary or exclusive adult sexual interest in mid-to-late adolescents, generally ages 15 to 19. Jailbait, or Johnny bait, is slang for a minor who is younger than the legal age of consent for sexual activity, but physically mature enough to be mistaken for an adult.

Now, good riddance for the motherfucker.

Regardless of what it is...that 'forum' is still disgusting. I'm just getting out of that age group myself (19) and I already think its disgusting to look at girls any younger than 17 (and that's pushing it...I don't want to get in a relationship with anyone younger than 18).

So jumping on the wagon...good riddance to this excuse for a human being. Now if only this would get Reddit into cleaning up somewhat...it won't happen, but a guy can hope.

Ghetto Edit: Daily Dot - Redditors donate money to Violentacruz
Michael Brutsch, the unwilling subject of a recent Gawker exposé that outed him as the controversial redditor violentacrez, announced on Saturday that he was fired from his position at a financial services company because of the unwanted attention. The 49-year-old Arlington, Texas, resident now finds himself in financial straits.

“I just hope I can hold out a month,” he wrote as mbrutsch, his “clean” Reddit handle. “My wife hasn't been able to work for over a year, and our savings will last about 3 weeks, not considering the current lack of health insurance.”

Not all is lost, however.

On Monday, Reddit user IAmA_Undecided kicked off a campaign on r/circlejerkers—a subreddit devoted to trolling with 109 subscribers—aimed at raising money for the beleaguered Brutsch.

“I want to post a link to a paypal account at a certain time when we can gather the troops and upvote it,” the redditor stated.

“I want to title it: ‘His Name Was Michael Brutsch. His Name Was Michael Brutsch. His Name Was Michael Brutsch. And We Will Buy Him A Beer.”

The title is a reference to Fight Club, a book and film in which a character earns back his identity after being shot and killed during an act of domestic terrorism.

The plan is to raise money from those who not only support the polarizing figure but also from detractors of r/shitredditsays (SRS), a subreddit devoted to exposing “bigoted, creepy, misogynistic, transphobic, unsettling, racist, homophobic” comments and threads posted across the site. SRS subscribers have been some of the most vocal champions of the Gawker article that outed violentacrez.

“[T]here will be one tangible benefit to donating: the seething rage of SRS as they realize they haven’t broken [Brutsch], and that he does not stand alone,” declared IAmA_Undecided.

As for Brutsch, he appreciates the sentiment behind the campaign but isn’t holding his breath.

“I was contacted by a couple of redditors who wanted to do something,” he told the Daily Dot via a Reddit private message, “so I told them to go ahead, but I doubt anything will come of it.”

He’s also focusing his attention elsewhere, largely looking for a job and preparing for an on-air CNN interview slated to air today.

So far, his supporters have contributed $110.

What? How is that illegal or even imoral?

In my country, no one would bat an eye if a 19 year old had a relationship with a 16 year old.

I'm not saying that it is illegal. Just that I don't want to, since I don't view anyone younger than 17 as emotionally ready for anything resembling a serious relationship, and I'm not the type of person to go on a fling. As for the 'disgusting' comment, that relates more to 15 and younger, not 16. Sixteen/seventeen are the youngest I would (at my current age...gets higher as I get older) look at. Probably wasn't as clear as I wanted to be there...

*thinks on it*

Nope, not even going to argue that one.

But by the same token, you could probably find people in their 20's/30's who aren't emotionally ready for a serious relationship either. So blanket generalizations don't work here I guess (yes I know that shoots my own point in the foot :P )

But that is a bit of a tangent considering this is N&P not Adult Relationships...so back on topic...

Does anyone think that there will be any changes to Reddit out of this? Or will it just spawn a bunch of new problems as they rally around this guy?

No, Reddit has its head so far up its own ass that things will just continue as normal. This is like a year after Jailbait was closed only because Anderson Cooper went on CNN to call them out for being creepy as fuck pedophiles. At the time, Jailbait was the second result whhen googling "reddit" and was the number one term bring people to the site. This comes after Reddit had another shitfit because one of the Creepshot posters, a substitute teacher in Georgia, was caught and fired for posting upskirt shots of his students. In every case, including this one, they have blamed the people reporting this awful shit because of "free speech" and "right to privacy," even as they try to restrict others' speech and invade others' privacy.

Anyone donating money to Michael Brutsch, admitted pedophile, is a shitbag and I hope it's secretly just collecting names for an FBI watchlist.

Reddit has introduced a new rule banning all pictures of minors. I don't remember of the top of my head whether that was limited to pictures that are sexual in nature. A huge number of subreddits have been banned (yes, even those that are perfectly legal even in the US), although that was a development that had started a couple of weeks ago IIRC. Both the admins and the majority of redditors seem to be pretty clear in their anti-pedo stance.
It should also be noted that anyone can be a "reddit moderator" by opening their own subreddit. Nobody would even have to know about its existence, if its not being promoted somehow.

But do go on making broad generalizations about thousands of people.

Sure, the reddit admins were complicit for years in the sexualization of children, supported by a huge chunk of their userbase, but now they're really sorry and it was all just a bunch of bad apples. We're also talking about a website where r/Feminism is run by literally the same people that run f/MRA and r/Masculism after they managed to get all the women kicked out, where one of reddit's admins just said women shouldn't post in r/Gaming because it's so toxic and hostile to women, but god forbid we use some of the most popular and active communities on reddit and their behavior to make some kind of inference on the their members.

Edit: Let's not forget, reddit's official response to the article was to ban links to Gawker, and how the most popular response to a question in their mod forum on how to deal with the issue was "ban everyone that points out misogyny, racism, and pedophilia on our boards, also it's a secret plot by Something Awful."

Yeah, let's not bullshit ourselves here, this is a legal reality manifesting as a moral decision. When I see people saying it about 17 y/o I can't help but think that that's in play.

As for this guy: I'm not surprised at his treatment. How many times have we seen some repugnant asshole make money through his "fans". The AmazingAtheist for example did do this somewhat successfully. The fact that it's on the matter of pedophilia doesn't really seem to land on the brains of these people. He's their scumbag damnit. Ugh.

I don't know. I see lots of 17 year olds who are hot by any standard, but from a perspective of a thirty year old guy, there's something about their behavior, way of talking etc that makes them look like children to me, and thus not sexually attractive at all.

Yeah, no. Legal reality manifesting as a moral decision. Plus, there is the continuous misuse of the word paedophile. Age of consent in here is 14, and we struggle with sexual turism, especially from europe. Not even pedos, but people who like teens.

The 18 year old thing in the most part of the US, IMHO, seems related to the religious situation there.

You're mostly incorrect on the age of consent here and your careful delineation between people who want to fuck 12 year olds and people who want to fuck 13 year olds is basically totally irrelevant.

I know that the age fluctuates, I'm saying that age of consent = 18 years is a meme. Sorry if that wasn't clear.

And yeah, sorry if I derailed the thread a little, just wanted to point out that while the r/jailbait thing is morally wrong, legally, he was safe. The article on Gawker even states so.

Is everyone who uses the word 'meme' an idiot?

Straying back to the actual topic rather than justifications for harrassment of girls, how is this guy a 'troll'? Wasn't his behaviour accepted by Redditt? Wasn't he just doing what people did in that community?

My point is that when a 19 year-old starts making moral declarations about 17 year-olds what's at play is really a legal issue that has been pushed into his head. And honestly, I think that you would be hardpressed to say that the behavior you notice is limited to people under 18. I'm sure that 18 year olds and 19 year olds can look just as childish.
