Sarah Palin - the new vanity Fair article

Post by Thanas »

Well, the new vanity fair article on Palin is here.

Well worth the read, especially as it has Palin seething with fury already.

I loved that the very first comment I saw under the article is saying that America is a 3rd World Country, Obama is the Problem, and Palin is the cure.

The ironic thing is that the policies many of those people support along with their mentalities are in line with the kind of people who are running third world banana republics.

And of course I say to them, If you want to live in a banana republic so bad, why don't you go move to one.

Pretty disappointed with that, to be honest. What exactly does it reveal that is new? We already knew that she was an extremely manipulative and vengeful politician whose folksy image is at least as much a product of fiction as fact. We already knew she was making a pile since she resigned and we already knew she had a strained relationship with Todd. All we're left with are unnamed sources saying 'yeah she's pretty much a bitch.'

The "impotent and limp" double mention briefly made me wonder if she'd perhaps hired Shroom as her press secretary. Now there's a frightening thought...

The article itself made her come off as a vindictive, spiteful, spectacularly self-absorbed woman. It's also interesting to see to what degree she's apparently managed (if we take the article as Gospel) to pressure and intimidate the people around her and, to a lesser extent, the people of Alaska. Of course the former isn't exactly news, and the latter seems par for the course for borderliners like her, but it's still an interesting insight in the magnitude she has on her surroundings.

Oh look CNN is fighting back.
(CNN) - Sarah Palin has managed to set the blogosphere ablaze again, this time after appearing to use sexual metaphors to slam mainstream media reporters who rely on anonymous sources.

"Those who are impotent and limp and gutless and they go on their anonymous - sources that are anonymous - and impotent, limp and gutless reporters take anonymous sources and cite them as being factual references," Palin said in her criticism of the press. "It just slays me because it's so absolutely clear what the state of yellow journalism is today that they would take these anonymous sources as fact."

The comments, made Wednesday on Sean Hannity's radio program, appeared to be fueled by an unflattering Vanity Fair profile out the same day that, relying heavily on unnamed sources, claimed the former Alaska governor had a 'mean temper.'

The third would seem to imply that Mr. Gross is... what, an obligate carnivore? I'm always unclear on what "gutless" means; humans devote a lot of volume to guts mostly so we can digest plant matter, as I recall.

I like to think Shroom's standards as a performer are higher than that. I mean, it'd be like being press secretary to the Marcoses. Sarah even has a ridiculous shoe collection paid for by a national political party...

Also on those who condemn "Chicago-style politics" when talking about Obama.

Hmm. Reading the article...
During these post-campaign days, according to insiders, Palin’s temper veered wildly. It was as if something had snapped. Visitors to her house witnessed her in core meltdown. To one of her children, she cried, “We weren’t good enough for America. We’ll never be good enough for America.”
Truer words have seldom been spoken, and almost certainly never spoken by her...

Er, not sure if you're serious here, but "gutless" means "cowardly." You know, like how "guts" is a colloquial synonym for "courage"?

I know what it means, it just doesn't make sense, Andrew.

Why should "gutless" mean "cowardly?" Animals with a smaller gut aren't generally less brave than animals with, or ruminants would be the most badass creatures in the animal kingdom.

Search me. Why should a lily-colored liver indicate cowardice either? At least "balls" as a courageous synonym makes a certain amount of sense via its association with manliness.

Exactly my point.

If we associate belligerence courage with manliness, and use a very broad definition of manliness, various genital-based slurs that are meant to imply that a man lacks courage at least sort of make sense. You can explain them in terms other than "we've always said that."

But now that I think about it, I don't really see why we associate courage with the digestive tract. It's like the fact that we park on driveways and drive on parkways. I know there must have been some causal relationship; the word wasn't chosen at random- but why?

According to the Online Etymology Dictionary, it stems from the intestines being thought the center of emotion. Gut is an old word for intestine (like catgut meaning intestines formed into cord, as for string instruments). If someone had courage they had guts (the plural of gut) and if the didn't, they lacked guts, or a gut, and were, thus, gutless.

If you've ever been in a physically threatening situation before in your life (and by the looks of it you haven't), you would know that your solar plexus region - your guts - feel hollow (for a lack of a better word). So, you either have the bottle there, or you don't. If you don't, then you give in to the 'hollow' feeling, and thus gutless.

Are we really explaining to an idiot why cultural phrases don't need to make sense backwards? He's so stupid he 'knows' there 'must' have been a 'causal relationship', as if a word can't be repurposed, put into a common phrase, then have another purpose flow from that and end up in ANOTHER phrase.

I seriously can't believe anyone can be that stupid. Next, let's explain why attractive women are 'hot' and why an excellent stunt is 'sick'.

There is always some process to explain how the phrase got that way. I often like to know what it was. Perhaps you do not; ignorance can be a pleasant state for some.

It's pretty off topic to be asking about the etymology of a word, especially when you can just google it.

I knew there was something a bit off about her. Yet its interesting to hear just how much dread she creates in Alaska and how afraid of her some individuals are.

And yet, very little of this information is sourced. A lot of it just hints ominously at the fear and paranoia felt among (unnamed) Alaskan citizens or former Palin campaigners. Intuitively, I suspect the journalist is probably correct, despite the lack of named sources; Palin probably is an ignorant, unstable, vindictive bitch. But this article only reaffirms what most of us already suspected based on what we saw during the election cycle, while offering nothing to Palin supporters who will dismiss this as more liberal lies.

Regardless, the most hilarious segment of the article actually was sourced, and given what we saw during the campaign, is doubtlessly genuine:
Vanity Fair wrote:[Colleen Cottle] describes the frustrations of trying to do city business with a mayor who "had no attention span - with Sarah it was always 'What's the flavor of the day?'"; who was unable to take part meaningfully in conversations about budgets because she "does not understand math or accounting - she only knows buzzwords, like 'balanced budget'
