The laws on that are a bit different in the UK, IIRC. Tom Cruise sued some magazine that claimed he was gay and won.

The quote was preceded by the writer's observation: "Remarkably, Will believes everyone is basically good."

Many celebrity gossip Web sites posted articles alleging that the 39-year-old actor believed Hitler was a good person.

In a statement Monday, Smith called that "an awful and disgusting lie," and said he was furious about his remarks being misinterpreted.

"Adolf Hitler was a vile, heinous vicious killer responsible for one of the greatest acts of evil committed on this planet," the statement said.

It's this kind of atmosphere which makes it impossible to discuss the psychological causes of bad behaviour in an intelligent manner. If you say anything that suggests you've ever tried to understand how bad people think, then there will always be those who think that you are not sufficiently "against" them. The only thing you're allowed to say about bad people is that they're evil; anything more intelligent than that runs the risk of being grossly distorted the way this was.

Black-and-white tribalism is alive and well in human societies. In this case, it's "good" versus "bad"; if you want to be identified as "good", you must show yourself to be completely, unquestioningly against "bad" people. If you demonstrate that you can understand and sympathize with them, then you're not against them enough.
