No, you're absolutely right. I've always been frustrated by the facet of this board's culture that suggests that one should try to "win" debates. That's something that bothered me enough that, when I noticed it growing on me, I took a pretty lengthy sabbatical from the board.

That trying-to-"win"-debates thing is back in my personality, and I don't want it. It is to be gone, and it will be gone completely. I'm going to disappear again, and I'm going to scramble my password before I leave so I don't make the same mistake twice.

And that's my fifteen seconds on the soapbox. Thanks Mike, it's been a fun five (!) years.

I honestly don't know why he believes that he can eliminate his competitive male instinct by avoiding this web board. Does he believe that SDN creates that impulse? All we do is create an environment where people aren't bottled up, and that's one of the things that bubbles to the surface. But it's part of human nature and the nature of males in particular. Thinking you can escape it, or eliminate it from your personality, is just silly. All you can do is bottle it up by avoiding places where the rules are lax and people argue with each other.

I think Howedar is being quite unrealistic here. Why run away from your own nature? If you can handle rush-hour traffic in Toronto without going apeshit on somebody, you should be able to handle getting into a bad debate without hard feelings. It's not a matter of eliminating that part of your character, but learning to live with it.

The dieing started well before the pullout, at one point in 1943 the British had to employ the equivalent of four army corps just to restore order along the railways. But the key thing is, they killed quick, and then settled down and formed a pair of stable nations which have gone on to wage reasonably conventional wars. It’s going to be very lucky for everyone if Iraq can manage even that. Unfortunately, the only way that’s likely to happen is if all the sectarian militias become even more organized and effective at killing, leading to a more of a conventional civil war.
