115+ die in Iraq blast

Post by Bounty »

Breaking @ BBC
At least 115 people have been killed in bomb blasts in the Shia Sadr City area of the Iraqi capital, interior ministry and security sources say.

Details are still sketchy, but in one attack a car exploded at a food market which is a regular target of mainly Sunni Muslim insurgents.

Eyewitnesses quoted by Associated Press said burned bodies littered the ground.

Elsewhere in the capital, gunmen attacked the health ministry, sparking heavy gun battles with guards.

Still a huge number... What the hell is going on, hundreds die there daily now and no one gives a damn.

It is the steadily incremental nature of the violence that means that people become continually desensitized to the worsening headlines. A hundred a month one year, then a hundred week another year to a hundred a day the next...

But I think that people do give a damn when they actually stop and consider what is happening.

Just to put this into perspective, imagine walking down the streets of London/Paris/New York/Tokyo and having a car bomb go off killing a hundred bystanders. Now imagine that everyday. Now imagine that kind of day being routine all year round.

They're all ragheads anyway, let them burn, what do we care?

Oh wait, I believe we went over there to "liberate" them, or some such shit.

We should liberate our enemies more, it seems to do wonders for reducing their numbers. Let's liberate Iran next!

Especially the occupants of Sadr City, who are either in Sadr's Mahdi army or tacticly support his aims, which include said bombings, etc. I really can't get upset over this.

Oh yes, it's right up there with self-flagellation and the application of red-hot pokers to the genitalia. Other fine old religious traditions which have sadly fallen out of favour in this wacky secular world we live in.

I wonder how many others pick up on the fact that this all stems from religious differences, rather than social ones. You hear "civil war", but never "holy war". Ireland was the same.

The really ironic thing is that this is exactly how most of the world's Muslims reacted to 9/11. "New York? About time, those damned Americans have been supplying weapons to warlords and dictators in the Middle East for decades. I really can't get upset over a few thousand of them dying now." And of course, you use that reaction as proof that they're beyond the reach of reason and morality.

Yahoo news is reporting 160+ dead and 250+ wounded. Then of course the Shities went out and started killing Sunnis. Ok, can even Bush keep denying it's a civil war now?

The grabbing of people leaving mosques, dousing them with kerosene, and burning them alive is also a... nasty touch. "Only" 5 or 6, but I have no doubt that now it's been done it will happen again. Guaranteed to continue the circle of violence.

What a shitstorm it all is.

'Oh, it's not any worse than Philadelphia'.

If the headlines said '6 Catholics seized outside Church and burned alive' in Philly, there'd be so much shit it's ridiculous. But we have psychopaths in charge, so no one cares.

Who the hell is saying it's no worse than Philadelphia? Baghdad has as many murders in three days as we have all year--and our murder rate is a civic crisis.

The extremely serious, mature Rep. Steve King, R-Iowa.
27.51 Iraqis per 100,000 die a violent death on an annual basis. Now what does that mean? To me, it really doesn’t mean a lot until I compare it to people that I know or have a feel for the rhythm of this place. Well I by now have a feel for the rhythm of this place called Washington, D.C., and my wife lives here with me, and I can tell you, Mr. Speaker, she’s at far greater risk being a civilian in Washington, D.C. than an average civilian in Iraq. 45 out of every 100,000 Washington, D.C. regular residents die a violent death on an annual basis.
If he wasn't extremely serious and mature, why, that's just crazy talk. How dare you pretend Iraq is anything other than rosy! This happened in June, admittably, but it's a meme that's infected the retards who report on politics.

IIRC, the population of Iraq is about 20 million; some quick calculations reveal that that kind of death rate should give us ~550 dead Iraqis per year.

Yes, that makes so much sense when death tolls smaller than this don't even make the headlines any more.
