FREEDOM is the freedom to keep your job even if you're not doing it!
HAPPINESS is the government 100% committed to your personal agenda even at the cost of society!

I'm getting a schizophrenic lesson on Socialism and Welfare vs Anarcholibertarianism in this comic.

Also somebody find and post one of those comics where everything is labeled. I love that, how you have to label everything people people are too dull to realise lambs led to a slaughter with wolves labeled 'Bailout' mean taxpayers so they need it written on the side of a sheep. I'm surprised political cartoons don't have "Obama" written on Obama's forehead.

The backstory to this blog post comic: Chuck Asay was confronted by a democrat and ran away to cry himself to sleep. Days later a response occured to him, depicted in this majestic comic.

The "Rebuttal Comic" is one of the triumphs of modern literature- notice how the democrat is left speechless. In real life, no democrat could triumph against this argument, and the comic structure of the piece is emphasized by the republican pointing it out. There are so many beautiful and deep layers to this that I as a layman can't describe it. You'll have to read Scott McCloud's latest book, "Understanding Chuck Asay's Rebuttal Comics" to get the full picture.

Guardsman Bass wrote:Is he? I think this is referring to how Congress killed a voucher program for kids in the DC School District.
Except that the cartoonist managed to mix up the effects of vouchers with the effect of not having them.

Basically, the idea for vouchers started right after the courts forced integration for schools. School vouchers were started so that white kids could go to a private school that could magically not admit "problem students" (somehow though, none of them were white). That way they could have state money to do so, even though mommy and daddy would have paid for it anyway.

Of course, now school vouchers are so that reactionary right-wing parents can send their kids to a private school and avoid them being exposed to "liberal thinking."

EDIT: Also, DC proposed vouchers- $7,500

Tuition at:

Bullis- $26,000+
Landon- $27,000+
Sidwell Friends- $28,000+

That will really help poor kids get into private schools.

I like how they consider a firearm the acceptable preventative measure against school bullies. Yeah. Like a bully wouldn't be the first one to use an excessive display of power to exert control. Or is that a hyperbole to make it sound completely over the top? Thing is, while it would be true that it is unreasonable to bring a gun to school, and it make be unwanted for teens to have sex, it's hard to know what kids will have the interest and opportunity to have sex and so you need to find ways to a) scare it out of them and b) make sure your kid, if he screws up, isn't given a horrible disease. Your children are already equipped with the only weapons they need, in this case. Teaching them some "gun control" isn't a bad idea.

Even the straw liberal shouldn't have realistically had an issue, what's wrong with gun safety classes? If you're in an area where firearm usage in teens is as likely as sex amongst teens, I don't think it would be irresponsible for the school district's PE course to take a month out of the schedule to learn the proper safety protocols with handling a weapon. Sex education isn't sex practice, afterall, it isn't like you're giving people an opportunity to go do it.

Flipped around, they're basically saying that unless the parent wants their kid to go hunting with them, they can't even learn the basics of firearm safety, or why they're dangerous, or why they should wait until they're old enough to handle a firearm and understand the consequences for pumping your shotgun. If you want a dangerous idea, it's that learning safety has to come at the same time as unregulated use.

I love it, it's so hilariously backwards I can't help but think "Wow, Republicans are idiots for thinking the a national budget will fit on a tiny slip of paper!" I have trouble fitting a list of groceries on a post-it note, but I guess they can fit a budget for an entire country

I've always hated this whole "I don't want to pay taxes for other people's benefit" idea. After all, I don't think most people would like it if the fire department showed up to your house while it's burning down and said "OK, before we put this fire out, we're gonna need some cash." I've always figured you may as well extend it to other needs like health-care.

Well you see, a fire can spread from one house to the next, making it a public menace if left unchecked.

Unlike healthcare, where if one person catches a disease, everyone around them is at risk of catching it, making it a public menace if left unchecked.

Wait a minute...

There's also a few cartoonists out there who invoke the fear of a sinister special interest known as "BIG ABORTION" or "The Abortion INDUSTRY", as if the real push to keep abortion legal was driven by a cabal of fatcat executives who make big bucks off of abortions. I'm not sure how much of that is dishonesty and how much of that is a seriously twisted misunderstanding of the reasons people support legal abortion.

Uraniun235 wrote: Editorial cartoonists could potentially tap into some of these sources of revenue with varying success, but I think they'd be at a disadvantage since most of them don't have recurring characters that people can come to adore. I have to admit it would be enormously satisfying to see Ted Rall try and fail to market a plushie based on his proudest creation, Generalissimo Bush.
I think part of the disadvantage is simply art- there's nothing especially memorable about the way a lot of cartoonists draw, so there's no interest in their extra-comic business. That doesn't mean they need to be savants- something like The Far Side wasn't the most graphically sophisticated, but Gary Larson manages to get an amazing amount of character (and probably $$$) out of simple archetypes like cows, chickens, and the fat people through great design. Hopefully merchandising would force some cartoonists to focus more on the art (or team up with someone for that).

Those awful first two satirical cartoons demonstrate how Republicans are in some ways more callous and wasteful than autocratic, murderous, and warlike dictators such as Hitler and Mussolini were.

It has always amused just how distorted the far right views the abortion issue in regards to "liberals" Ive talked to people who sincerely believe we "push" abortion.. not the choice, the act, that, every time "we" flush an aborted fetus there's a group of Liberals who pump their fist in the air and cheer...
