Ever the early adopters, Hong Kong audiences (and a few censor-evading visitors from the mainland) have turned the Chinese film 3-D Sex And Zen: Extreme Ecstasy—a stereoscopic porn that follows “a young man as he befriends a duke and enters a world of royal orgies and other sexual peccadilloes” in your face —into a box-office smash, grossing 2.78 million Hong Kong dollars on its opening day last week. That bests the previous record held by James Cameron’s Avatar, which had a first-day gross of 2.63 million in 2009. Perhaps Cameron should have left in the ponytail-fucking?

Best Hong Kong opening, im sure that mediocre as it was Avatar brought in a little more than that on opening day.

Its also facing some of the harshest criticism by both movie goers and professional critics post release, although this is due more to the hype that surrounded the release than anything.


3D was just one of the major things used to build up the hype. Others involved up and comming stars like Vonne Lui, famous AV actresses Saori, who has decided to quit the industry post tsunami which increases the rarity value further and of course, the title itself.

I just like the fact that they did it. Hong Kong isn't quite the mainland when it comes down to porn, but with half the residents educated in Catholic School and the others trying uphold 'high moral standards' inherited from god knows where, there really needs to be more open discussion of sex out in the open. Even if it's just 3D porn.

Sex and Zen is a film franchise along the lines of National Lampoon and etc.

They released 3 films in the late eighties to the nineties before they stopped.
