Whats your pet issue?

Post by Cairber »

Do you have a pet issue that you have researched to the point where you jump at the chance to debate it (even if you just hear the issue comin outta the mouth of some stranger on the street corner). I dont mean something like "the economy," which is more like the class hampster, it belongs to everyone. Its just this issue/issues that drive you to be politically active in that area (for some people who hold abortion in thie category it decides their vote). What are your pet issues?
Say NO to circumcision IT'S A BOY! This is a great link to show expecting parents.

Abortion, but I won't really debate it, just offer what I believe.

Gun control.

I thought you couldn't legally own guns, Shep?
Anyhoo, if gun laws are a problem in Maryland  , move to Virginia.
Much better laws there. :D

I honestly believe that it might be a good idea to restrict the right to vote. I'm not necessarily advocating a "Starship Troopers"-style government, but democracy's greatest flaw is obviously its assumption that all opinions are equally valid. By prohibiting the dumbest of the dumb from voting, I believe we would be doing a good thing.

I suppose this could count as a "pet issue".

Ethanol as an alternative energy source (Why don't we just follow the movie Species and develop a new form of methane? ).

I also dislike the assumption that if someone puts in a $1000 investment today, and makes $1050 back sometime in the future, that this must be a good thing to do.

Pet peeves:
  • "Family Values". In particular, the popular notion that "family values" is all about bashing gays and censoring risque material rather than real help for families, such as strengthening public education, improving public safety, and giving better tax advantages for children and stay-at-home parents.
  • Religion in government. Particularly with respect to laws which criminalize certain activities for no other reason than the fact that religious people don't like them.
  • People who attack science. These are usually fundies, but New Agers and all manner of dumbshits out there like to bash science. I particularly hate the "scientists don't know everything, so you can't say ..." line. It's a sure sign that the speaker has the intelligence of a squirrel.
  • Racists. Particularly the "modern enlightened racist" who thinks that every race has a distinct and inseparable "culture" attached to it and that this ethnic cultural balkanization is actually a good thing. Regular racists are easy to bash, but the modern pseudo-enlightened ones have successfuly convinced mainstream society that their particular brand of racism is not racist at all.
  • Anyone who uses "liberal" or "secular" as an insult.
