Considering we went to open war with them, and they invaded us, and the only reason that we're not at war now is due to Organian intervention, it might be best to pursue other options by again, trying to support the Rebellion in any way possible, and opening up trade with the more reasonable governments in the Star Wars galaxy.

Offering asylum to Rebellion ships if they enter our space would, if nothing else, improve their odds if they're able to get onto our side of the wormhole. In return for their gratitude, I'm sure they'll be willing to help us with the technological gap and give us a leg up, as we would be natural allies.

Nitpick: the federation government was never meant to be a 'communist dictatorship', it was meant to be the theoretical post-dictatorship communist paradise that resulted when dictatorship was no longer REQUIRED and people just were good little citizens because they WANTED to be. Hence some of the wierdness (some would say idealism) of how ST characters act from our perspectives.

Karl Marx, in his Grundrisse, argued that scarcity would eventually be eclipsed by the further development of automation, eventually reaching a point where human activity is free from material constraints to pursue the sciences and arts, and to pursue creative activities.[5] Marx's concept of a post-capitalist communist society involves the free distribution of goods made possible by the abundance provided by automation.[6]The fully developed communist economic system is postulated to develop from a preceding socialist system. Marx held the view that socialism - a system based on social ownership of the means of production - would enable progress toward the development of fully developed communism by further advancing productive technology. Under socialism, with its increasing levels of automation, an increasing proportion of goods would be distributed freely.[7]

They go through the progression to the above idea in this thread:

then of course the old standbys:

This is nothing new. I remember reading Marcuse in 1994. The whole Idea of a technological utopia has been around for a long long time. It's that damn 2nd law of thermodynamics that keeps getting in the way! That and human nature of course.

Please point out the episode or movie where the Federation was a dictatorship that made this society possible.

You, as your capacity as Federation President, have been approached by the Empire seeking:

Access to Federation Technology such as transporters, replicators, holodecks, which are either not known in the Empire. As well as this the Empire also wants phasers, and technology that could be used to create mind-probes and borg nanoprobes.

In exchange, the Empire is prepared to export military technology to the Federation in the form of one hundred Dreadnought-class warships.

What is your response to the Imperial offer?

I would say that in relation to negotiations that the federation are in a good position, under the scenario that the Organians have prevented and will continue to prevent a full out expansion of the empire, at the same time accepting warships or any military technology will kick off a whole new arms race for the alpha quadrant, even worse if it was after the dominion war and Romulas was destroyed.

If I was the president I would refuse any form of military exchange, any deal would send panic for the regional powers and would see political turmoil. I would look at an exchange of technology that would benefit my allies and strengthen political stability. Better communications, hyper drive and templates to construct larger vessels for the purpose of exploration and colonisation.

The treaty would be a non aggression pact but with certain trade treaties permitted, the federation has made peace with some regimes, the Klingon empire is a dictatorship even if the federation has influence over it. So an exchange with the Empire won't be out of the question, holodeck technology, medical technology and terraforming, I would also propose and in stages a trade of resources and metals that they may not have in their galaxy. I would not give teleportation technology or anything that could be refitted that will make them even more dangerous.

Ultimately i'll have to be a deal that benefits the other powers in my region as well.

If it takes the Organians to stop them, I ain't giving them ANY tech that could possibly help them.

A question. What happens if I try and work out a deal with the empire that effectively backstabs the Federation for my personal gain? Like for example I ask that those dreadnaughts be crewed by droids that will obey me alone with the intent of using them to subjugate the entire quadrant and form a mini empire.
It has become clear to me in the previous days that any attempts at reconciliation and explanation with the community here has failed. I have tried my best. I really have. I pored my heart out trying. But it was all for nothing.

You win. There, I have said it.

Now there is only one thing left to do. Let us see if I can sum up the strength needed to end things once and for all.

Your treason is identified by the Starfleet Intelligence Signals Bureau and you are reported to the Federation Council. You are impeached and sent to the Federation Funny Farm on Elba II, or placed on trial and sent to a Penal Colony, depending on whether you are deemed insane.

If for some reason this takes too long, Section 31 has you killed.

So basically there is no fun to be had from this. In that case I resign from my position citing health reasons and retire to that pleasure planet (forgot the name) and let my successor sort this mess out.

Bit of a Necro, but Elections take time, and President Purple stepping down WAS unexpected.

I would trade with the Empire. If I don't,l someone else WILL.

Simple as that.

100 Dreadnaught Class Imperial Warships would secure the Federation and it's allies against anyone. Moving about the UFP + Klingon Empire would require minimal fuel (if we can't refit them to use Anti-Matter power or other power sources), and all projections make it likely a Dreadnaught could stop a large number of Borg vessels at once (possibly only using 2 - 3 Turbolasers at once).

Will the Empire refitt them to have Droid Crews (ala the Confederacy or Trade federation) so minimize the crewing effects on Starfleet?

I get as big a trade with the Empire going as I can, and cite the Prime Directive about not caring about their internal politics.
